Back-2-Nature Farm
Приєднався 31 жов 2006
Growing up in the country with a large garden and forced to pick green beans before I could play with my friends, I swore NEVER to have a garden or eat fresh vegetables again!! As an adult, by happen stance, I stumbled upon a book by Dick Raymond "The Joy of Gardening," which really challenged my views toward gardening and got me hooked. A few years later, Eliot Coleman and Barbara Damrosch's TV series, "Gardening Naturally" inspired me to go all ORGANIC, which I have been since the mid '90s.

That is a very cool tip for tidying up around plants. Thank you.
Glad to see another video thanks and God bless~
Thanks . . . it's good to be back :)
really miss yalls videos
Haven't seen a video in awhile. How's the farm coming along this year?
why burning make wood chips for mulch.
yes would love to see an update. I have been using a similar method on my suburban garden by throwing all my tree and bush trimmings on top of my garden, soil is amazing - black, loose, full of worms and crickets. And it keeps all that volume out of the landfill. There is a link to a landmark Laval University study on ramial wood chips if you google for: Laval ramial wood chips
my radishes was 30 days I live in ga and it took 90 days and they what en but the size of a dime
How did you make a video & put it on youtube with out power??
I'm trying something different this year too. I'm mulching heavily (4 inches or more) for weed protection and moisture conservation to see if I can manage without watering - Mark
This year I'm trying a different method of watering. Previously I've had trouble watering my Squash, because the dry soil in a small hill causes the water to just run off, and doesn't soak in. So, this year I'm trying what I call the "Volcano Method". Basically, istead of flattening the top of the hill, I make it concave like a volcano to pour water into the center, with my seeds sowed around the rim. It seems to soak the hill better when manually watering my plants.
For the mulch I use on the garden, I have local tree trimmers deliver it to the farm for free (in large quantities). It is much easier than chipping the brush pile. However, I make good use of the ash from the brush pile (good source of potassium) and spread it on my veggies, especially root crops like potatoes. In one of my videos (don't remember which one), I do show me moving the chicken house with the tractor
I wish I had your brush piles. I have seen the back to eden film, that guy puts 4 inches of wood chips on his orchard and gardens and hardly ever has to water his plants. I found out from youtube videos you can put a 1 1/2 inch hole in the deck of your lawnmower and put in tree branches. My mulching mower cuts right thru them and feeds them into the bagger. I just don't have enough branches like what you have. I enjoy your videos would like to see your portable chick coop when its done.
If it ever stops raining here in Georgia, I'll give you an update! :)
Sweet potatoes like long hot summers. However, I know farmers in Maine (much colder than Denmark) that grow them. Denmark is only a zone or 2 colder than Georgia. If it is not quite warm enough, grow them under clear plastic tunnels (that is what they do in Maine)
I'd really like to see an update on this.
Ever Think of growing pumpkins vertically or up a tomato steak. I heard it works well and it doesn't take up much space. I'm going to try it this year!
I plan on mulching my garden beds next year
This is our first official stab at it too; I'm anxious to see how it turns out (it looks promising but you never know)
Mark glad to see you made a video. By the way I am interested in how did your grain do? I remember you planting some grain to make flour out of.
I like the post hole digging and milk jug.
nice update mark..keep up the good work!
Rather than burning, it would have been nice to run that stuff through a chipper for mulch. Nice garden.
Great stuff. Interested to see how planing right in the mulch works out. Thank you for your videos.
looking real good Mark
try watermelons!!!
Your okra is amazing. What ru using as fertilizer?
@bjjosey I will plant 4-5 seeds and then thin to have only 2 plants in the cage
how many cantaloupe plants do you plant per cage?
great looking farm ! I'm curious as to how well the swiss chard did, I plan to try some in the fall. and may try to get some out right now as well.
Your mill sounds like a jet engine
snow peas are where its at!
Nice fall garden! Many of my crops are about gone here in west Tennessee. We get considerably colder than you, earlier. Still got lots of greens, turnips, and "salad stuff" though. Love the flour mill! Where do you buy your wheat?
@Helioforge I totally agree! Some many of the vegetables are actually sweeter after a freeze! - Mark
@webcajun Thanks Donald! The whole flour things is very interesting. In the 1920s when we started commercially milling flour, we noticed that if we removed the germ and bran, the flour would not spoil. However, everyone started getting sick so in the 1940s we added back "some" of the nutrients to get what we call enriched flour today. However, fresh milled flour is SO much heather for you. One of the higher sources of Vitamin E which we don't get a lot from other foods. - Mark
Beautiful plants and great video Mark, you’re certainly doing something right. I like the flour mill……Donald
Mby better without the machine tiller?
@sugerbear520 Thanks Eric! - Mark
@iowanne We got them this spring from Tractor Supply Co.; they were probably several days old when we got them. Then, various people gave us even more. What started out to be only 10 chickens has blossomed into 30! The older ones have just started laying! - Mark
nice
When did you get your chickens? How old are they that they have started to lay already? Did you get them as 1 day old chicks?
@4micaman Keep trying Anthony; you'll eventually discover the magic combination for lettuce in your area (I'm not 100% satisfied with mine yet!) - Mark
@rancidscooter drip irrigation set on a timer; I have a well on the farm for the water source. - Mark
What kind of irrigation do you use?
@dianemummvideos Thanks Diane!
Always look forward to your videos……Donald
