DONNER HARD ENDURO 2024, Let The Games Begin
Back at the Donner Hard Enduro. Started back of the pack because I didn’t do the prologue. I got in late Saturday and needed another day recovery for my back. Had a great race. Had bike issues with a hard landing from getting over the famous wall slab at spectator hill. But rolled with the punches and kept on going. That’s racing Thanks to all the guys who stopped by and said hello and wished me luck.
And geez I said, “anyways” so much during the video you could make your own drinking game from it. Enjoy

Hard Enduro Tire Review For Michelin Extreme, IRC JX-8, IRC VE33S, and Bridgestone Battlecross E50

This is my sxs review from my experience of running a Michelin Extreme, IRC JX-8, IRC VE33S, and a Bridgestone Battlecross E50 tires on my Hard Enduro races. Take from it what you will, everyones experience will be different depending on how you ride where you ride and mousse set up. A couple things I forgot to talk about is rim locks. I run double rim locks and I'm thinking of running triple e...

This was a rough a one. Very over grown and rustic. It was a battle through the brush. Had a chain guide break off the swing arm. Had the fan blades bust off the radiator cooling fan. I’m glad this one is over.

Another great ride at barren ridge with my nephew Case. Finally found the “bookshelf” a short but extremely narrow ridge crossing. Use extreme caution folks. Also found some abandon trails that stumped us for now. Enjoy

This was the main race day for the 2024 Moab Hard Enduro. It was 6hrs or 3 laps. I started out slow and my goal was to just ride clean and save my energy and get one lap. But as racing goes that didn’t happen. I dumped my bike over right before check point 3 and broke the water pump. I loved the event and hope to try again next year. Ride safe ride hard enjoy
2024 Moab Hard Enduro Saturdays Prologue

This is the Saturdays prologue race for the Moab Hard Enduro. Started 40 B row Had a good race today with a new bike set up from handle bars and tires. Finished in 1:42hrs which felt like it flew by. I think it was perfect for a prologue. Wasn’t too hard or too long. Had a couple things to fix afterwards on the bike to get ready for the main on Sunday. Enjoy

My first time at Griding Stone. Had some trouble on the start and left some skid marks on the trail. It’s very intimidating for your first time but after doing it I think I’m ready for a rematch next year. Trixie took a beating. Enjoy

This is the second half of the barren ridge ride. I got to the limits of my comfort zone on going down hill towards the end. It was extremely steep and scary. Battery died at the end which had the biggest section of the down hill. Overall it was a fantastic ride but don’t go that way. Enjoy

The Loop 2 the hard loop was a lot of fun. Course markers could’ve been a little better. Several riders got off course and had a hard time stay on the line. I ended up 2nd in my Class and 74th overall. That’s my best finish ever and was really happy with my riding. Still lots of room for improvement. Enjoy

terrible course marking
IRC just announced bigger sizes in the gummy range 140 JX8 and V33 etc you’re gonna be stoked!
Hell yeah. I’ll take the credit lol
You guys are animals! Would love to go for a ride.
That was a tough one. Just waiting for the temps to go back down
I really enjoyed your commentary man. Great video! See you there in 2025.
Thanks. For sure. New bike next year so I’m excited to see what I can do on it
They use luan.
I wish manufacturers would’ve just added at least two aluminum tubing rails on the door. They would be still extremely light and twice as strong
@@hardcoreenduro they should also have used epoxy and structural foam.
@@hardcoreenduro mine is decaying at the bottom. The luan, foam and outer skin. I'm thinking of just building a whole new core and moving the frame, using Azdel panels as the outer skin instead of luan and paper thin aluminum.
I like the fact you were drinking while explaining your race. I’m 37 ride a yz450fx bone stock for the last 6 years! I’ve done suspension but I feel I could only make it half the distance you went brother good job.
Thanks. It was a good whiskey. I always tell myself the bike can do it. The 450 is a beast.
@@hardcoreenduro I love that wide ratio trans tho so it gets me through a lot of stuff. Slipping the clutch and minimizing tire spin is key. Engine breaking on decline helps me out a lot to stay on the pegs and focus on that front tire. I only weight 186 with all gear on
Which route/staging did you use for access to Chimney Rocks trail? In planning stages for a trip now
Where I staged was right south of the first divide off of lavezzola rd. There isn’t a lot of parking space there. To trail head it’s about 2 miles. I went up sailor ravine rd to hit downieville river trail 10E02. That will take you up to chimney rock. None of the trails have direction sign on them but after riding the divides they looked like down hill runs. Very narrow and cliffy so watch out for head on traffic
Good info! Thank you very much
if you haven’t talked to Jeff from Project Enduro for Vets, i can hook you up. he is a fantastic guy, and has some cool events coming up !!
Sure that would be great
@@hardcoreenduro i sent him your link buddy, keep riding, and thank you for your service 🤘
The voice over commentary is actually quite pleasing. Yeah, it is "hard" enduro, still I felt so bad for the punishment your bike endured! Hope she/you heals up nicely.👊🏼🏁
Thanks. Trixie is a gluten for punishment. I like working on her too. Some people send their bikes off to a shop. I like working on my bike and enjoy my shop time. I definitely need to get better as a rider tho.
I was D37 on a wr450. My bike would sputter at high altitude.
Didn't get to see you, I was at top of the world and then I rode down to the old cabin area.. Man, you sure sent Trixie flying a lot in this race. Never a good choice but with that big bike you still amaze me how good you do.. Oh, VCGP, although it's the same mountain it different trails every year! Wish they would go back to the LONG races there.. Great job, bummed I missed ya Until next time Cheers😊
Ya I was a little rough on her. I had my up’s and downs. Some spots I hit really good. Other spots i was letting her fly hoping for the best. Towards the end my hands were just cramping too much I couldn’t open them up anymore. So had to call it.
Yoooo my neighbor 💪💪 Amazing race dude, it was blast 👌
Thanks. It was very nice to meet you. I hope to see you for the hard enduro series next year. Get that bike fixed and keep riding
Heck ya! Been wanting to do this one. Maybe next year…
Now you’re speaking my language. You’re a good rider I know you would do well on it. We need to get a ride together this fall.
Ya definitely gotta ride. I’ll keep in touch.
I went to donner to check it out. I was at spectator hill. I had a great time and the hard enduro crowd are my kind of people. I grew up riding trails and woods. I got into streetbikes in my 20s and still ride today. I've been thinking of getting a Kdx 220 to get out and ride the mountains again. Not ready to spend KTM money. And it don't want to be that guy that sucks on a nice bike.
I ride a heavy 450 and I have a blast on it. Whatever you choose build your skills and force yourself to practice the small fundamentals. It will greatly improve your riding.
All those hard enduro races has certainly paid off for you George! good job.
Thanks. Can’t wait for the next one
What tougher this race or donner hard enduro?
For a single race the main event of donner is harder. There’s just more obstacles. But as a race weekend I’d say KOM is harder as you have longer races. 5hr prologue and then 6hr main.
Ok thanks, badass videos!!!
You doing Donner this year?
Yes I’m doing it this year. I hurt my back last Sunday though tubing behind a boat on the lake. I don’t know how it will be feeling by this weekend. I hoping for the best.
@@hardcoreenduro I hear you stay out of the 4stroke class . Any reason?
The 4 stroke class treated like the As and pros in past races. So I would’ve had to do the pro lines. I’m not on that level yet. Intermediate is hard enough for me for a race. If I had all day I’d hit the pro lines but on a time cut off race I’m happy with the B or intermediate class
Your video is over an hour. For three laps, did it take three hours for the total race?
This race just had 2 loops. Each loop had 3 different test sections that you get timed on. There transfer sections in between the tests that you cruise on and you can take a break before you start your next test. Some guys take longer rests than others. Some guys just go straight into the next test race section. It’s up to you. They had a break between the first loop and the second loop. If your fast your actual ride time would easily be under 2 hours total. If you like me I was around 3hrs of ride time. This video doesn’t include my transfer sections or the waiting break I took to start the next test.
Nice video. Have you been up there recently? I am thinking of climbing up the Saddle Springs Road and then descending down this trail (Clear Creek) on a mountain bike. any thoughts?
It’s been 2 years since I rode this trail. But looks like a big fire up there right now. I’m sure the will be closed right now. The borel fire. Contact forest department to be sure
I’d head over across the canyon to Shirley meadows There’s a fun single track up there that has a lot of flow to it called potato patch it’s 6500-7000 feet so a little cooler up there. Then north of that the bull run trail north of Alta sierra Slightly lower elevation but for mountain bikes only.
Brotherrrr!!!! just stumbled on your video!!! EPIC!!! thank you!!!
Thanks man
Great video very informative I need to fix my toy hauler ramp if you don’t mind me asking where did you get the aluminum tubing and exact dimensions on the tubing I’ll greatly appreciated it if you could help me with that thanks
The square tubing was 1 1/2” x 1/4” thick aluminum I don’t know if all you hauler manufacturers are using the same dimension doors so I’d measure yours in a small sample spot to make sure the 1 1/2” square tubing will fit. Also your door will be heavier when finished. So either get stiffer hinge springs or make a system to raise it like I did. Now mine is still light enough to lift. But my wife wouldn’t be able to lift it on her own. It Takes some engineering as each trailer is different, but boy I sure love raising and lowering it with the push of a button.
@@hardcoreenduro thanks for the quick reply I can imagine how easy it is to open and close with the winch that modification is on the plan also where can I buy the tubing and hardware do you have the company name you bought the tubing from?
There are metal suppliers everywhere. Just look up a metal supplier near you. You’ll be able to get 20ft sticks of it or ask them to cut them for you. Should metal supply or iron supply Mine is a local store called Morgan slates metal supply But I guarantee you have a metal supplier near you
@@hardcoreenduro Thanks So much for your help I will check
Hello what bikes are you guys on, know its been awhile thx
They are on 2007 Wr250’s. I’m on a 2016 Wr450
Thx for getting back to me. If there's room to get in on a ride with you guys I'd like to join you 🤙
For sure. I like riding the hard trails if you’re into that email me at george@hardcoreenduro.com
Damn, I can't believe you are on a 450... rode it well. This is my second video of yours.. enjoy them for sure, especially your commentary!! Im 61, ride a crf250 with a big bore kit. My issue is keeping the motor cool. I volunteer at Donner, i enjoy working the rock climb right after check 1.. I'll look for you in the pits to say hi. My sxs and bike both have stickers of DDNMC. (Dirt Diggers North MC) Look forward to meeting you there
Awesome. Yeah she’s big. But there’s bigger bikes out there. Guys are crazy out there these days. Really good riders too. Right I’ll say hi for sure. Just got new graphics in trixie she’s gonna be looking good for the race in
This is such a well done video - informative & entertaining, checks all the boxes! Great idea on the aluminum box tubes. I have to rebuild mine and was going to use plywood but was worried about the weight. This looks like it will be much lighter, and less work because i would have to cut & glue multiple sheets of ply together as 4 x 8 is what I can get easily. Thanks for posting!
Thanks. Every time I use it I have a feeling of satisfaction and pride. It really works great. Was a lot of engineering involved but well worth it.
What size bolts/screws did u use for installing the tracks on the ouside of the door?
I don’t remember off the top of my head. I’ll check on the rig when I get a chance You’re talking about what I used to anchor the E track right?
I used 12-24 x1 1/2” self drilling metal screws
check the best hard enduro riders in the world, even the riders that are not sponsored by michelin very often ride michelin in the back and their sponsored tire in the front
The best hard enduro riders in the world are competing in FIM competition, so they need a tire with the baby knobs. Michelin is great for that but gives up a lot of soft terrain performance compared to tires with more knob height.
@@OtisFlint extreme enduro is fim regulated only from last year. All the years before you could use any tire. But also there are many high level extreme races outside fim and still everyone uses michelin or similiar soft fim tire
i agree a JX8 in a 140 would be epic!
They just announced it! 140 jx8 and a new 140 wide FIM style tire (kinda like Michelin extreme, Midas, ect)
When's the new bike coming?!
Soon
To all of us out here in mud country of the Midwest, gummy tires are the absolute worst performing tires ever. Unless it’s summertime and dry.
What are you using for those conditions?
@@hardcoreenduro mitas 754 xt, regular ve33, at81 non ex.
Gummy tires in the California Mojave and Arizona Sonoran Deserts are a God send. For off camber, dry, decompose granite, and rocky ledges my set up is Golden Tyre 90/90 up front and the IRC VE33 S Gummy out back with Tubliss front and rear. My brother swears by the soft Nitro mouse up front. 👍
Even in mud I'd prefer the At81ex over the standard. As soon as you hit wet rocks n roots the standard is awful.
@@KaneSlayer414 I’ve run them back to back and the standard 81 defiantly bites better and holds corners better in mud than the ex. Ex outperforms it only in dry conditions or rocky conditions.
agree totally! im eastern sierra too and really like the ve33s but jx8 definitely grabs rock more and yep would like them fatter. ill be at donner and gunna try ex91 dunlop with Plews half mousse.
That’s awesome to hear! I wish we would have local clubs put on hard enduros Mammoth needs to put one on. I’ll have to look into that tire and mousse. Hope you have a great race at Donner
Check out the Plews extreme mousse seems pretty nice.
Thanks for the info. I’ll look into those
Appreciate your reviews...very well done. Similar to you I also ride SoCal deserts...mainly out by KOH area in Lucerne Valley. IRC tires are great quality and long lasting. For my yearly Colorado trips I run the JX8 and it is absolutely awesome for traction in the rocks and hard pack. For the desert I run the M5B and it seems to work very well for me. I have never tried the VE33. I'm just curious if you have run the M5B and how it compares to the VE33? Thx.
I’ve run the m5b a lot. It’s the best hill climb tire for same and soft dirt. The knobs on that are the biggest on any tire I’ve ever seen. That comes in a 140. It has a harder carcass with stiffer knobs. Great for sandy areas and muddy tracks. Hill climb areas like jawbone and bean canyon or Spangler There’s the ve33 and a ve33s. In the video I’m showing the ve33s tire. It’s same tread pattern as the ve33s just with softer rubber compounds. Only comes in a 110 tho. The knobs are not as big as the m5b. But still on the larger side of knobs sizes. I thinks it’s great for black diamond trails and prologues for races. Because it’s softer tho and depending how much wheel spin you use it will wear out faster than the regular ve33.
Differnet tire specs to make it even more confusing. The 140s width is measured including the lugs. The tires that are sized 110 and 120 usually are measured on carcass so with lugs the 120s are comparable to 140s.
Man that’s like trying to listen to a debate from Joe Biden lol. Thanks for the info, I remember rich Larson saying that tire brands all have their own way of sizing. That’s very interesting I should get out a tape measure and make my own chart of what tires are what sizes do they are all the same scale
need me one of those shirts!👍
Any advice on front tires for gnarly-ish terrain, tree roots rocks. Thanks
I’m running a vx 40 from irc in the front the 90/90 21. It’s a softer compound front tire. With a plushie mousse. It’s made for gripping rocks.
@@hardcoreenduro thanks 👍
@@CoBryan i run the irc vx30f and we ride rocky rooty trails, 90/90/21 as well, I love this front tire
I just went the ER from watching this.
Hey man great video. Where exactly is this trail, I live in the bay area and I would love to try this trail out? Can you provide a specific park or campground nearby?
Thanks. It’s up the kern river north of lake Isabela. It’s the right turn off just past ant canyon camp ground If you use onxoffroad it will be listed in there. It will be very hot this time of year so start early
@@hardcoreenduro Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your video! 🙂 40 years ago the NorthBay Trail Riders (Vallejo, CA) used to camp at Gerle Creek for the week before Labor day, There was more dirt between the rocks back then. We'd head out after an early breakfast with packed lunch. We'd cross the Rubicon, lunch at the top overlooking Lake Tahoe, and then back to Gerle Creek just in time for dinner. I was riding a 1976 Honda TL250 trials bike, and carried a half-gallon fuel bottle in my backpack to make it back to camp.
Thanx man . Absolutely dig the videos used to a member of the Rovers mc. Now in live in texas. Sure do miss that. Thnx again ✌️
That was a fun race. Probably one of the best loop 1’s
This place looks rad!
Wish you could’ve made it there.
This trail is now closed by the forest service until 2027. 😑
That’s your tax dollars at work right there
what volume gas tank you run? stock 450?
It’s a 2.1 gal tanks. Just stock. Good for 50 miles
Been enjoying your video's. You remind me of a guy I used ride with back in the day on an a TT500 down here in San Diego at a place called Palm avenue. He would find and climb the most knarly trails in the area . I think most of the remote trails in that area were made by him! Use to see alot of big Rattle snakes back in those brushy areas. Keep up the great content on that 450.
Thanks I appreciate that. I miss San Diego. I was stationed down there 5 years. Your buddy must have had a great time blazing new trails.
I thought Case rode a two stroke
No it’s an old 2007 wr250. It was a great starter bike. Still is a great starter bike.
Hello! Can I feature this video in my future content? Appreciate your response!
Sure go ahead
Man the terrain and weather there just looks epic.
It was. Fun riding through the trees. Very Different from all the desert riding
You had to go by Ragdump to get to where you were at. My buddy is the Mayor and most likely made every trail you road that day along with hundreds of miles of other trails that you didn't. That's a special place up there with amazing sites to see. It is terrible dusty this time of year and your right about the service road being more sketch than the trails in some spots. One year that road had rain ruts 3ft deep or more . Did Vince know anything about Ragdump?
Yes we rode right by rag dump. I’ll have to ask him but I’m sure he does he rides that area a lot. It was a great ride.
@hardcoreenduro I have to tell how exclusive that area is up there. The group of gentlemen associated with Ragdump I would consider the father's of hard enduro. Most tràils the locals know are intermediate level, but the location of the best and most challenging are known by only a few. I've had the chance to ride up there about a dozen times. It's my favorite place to ride and most fun I've ever had on a dirt bike
It’s a great spot out there. Wish I didn’t live so far away.
If you break down in the middle of nowhere what do you do? it would be interesting to know what tools and parts you pack. I know the basic stuff but any tips on any other parts or tools that the average Joe may need to know!
It’s non stop learning. You learn what you can survive with to get back to the truck I’ll have to have a short vid on what I’ve learned to pack
@@hardcoreenduro Yes, that's what we were hoping for! thanks for your input and videos.

Oh man you’re doing rubicon. Be ready for a butt kicking ride. This area doesn’t have a name really it’s just north of oroville off the 70. If you get an off-road map. It’s north of pulga Cross road of Dixie and concow is where we staged. The trails aren’t marked so I don’t have a trail number for them. It’s hot. Cold beer on the way
You mention Horse canyon trail by Silver Lake. We ride that a lot after it melts and long valley trail around the other side of Silver. It is very similar to Donner. This one looks fun as well. Directions?
When is it usually ready to ride? I’d like to try that trail but would like to ride with someone that knows it. Hermit valley is another fun trail I like to ride but probably not hard enough to train for donner
