2024 Nagase Cup Senior Brown Belt & Below 100+ Match 4

This is Serge Shematsi. This was probably my most evenly matched opponent of the day. THINGS I DID WELL: From watching his earlier matches, I knew that he liked to hit a drop seoi, and he had attempted a tomoe nage in a match too, so I knew if I came charging in he'd drop or roll under. Nice throw for waza ari at 1:28. I remembered Aaron talking to me over and over about just sitting down. I di...

This is Bret Bebermeyer. THINGS I DID WELL: Good job clearing his attacking hand at :23 Good kuzushi on the uchi attempt! He's off balance before my leg even comes in. Good uchi mata attempt at :34. Don't know what made me hit it. He immediately clammed up, and I knew I wasn't going to get anything, but the successful attack boosted my confidence, which is what made me hop up as quickly as I di...

This is Justin Wood. He won 100 as well as the under 100kg brackets. Very solid judoka. He wins the 100 and 100kg brackets. THINGS I DID WELL: Defended the ko soto gari at :15 seconds, hopped out of bounds and got a new start. Nice snatch single leg at :31 seconds THINGS I NEED TO IMPROVE: We're BOTH super leaned back at :18 seconds. Good time for O soto, o uchi or any forward attack. Need to r...

Second match of the day. Starts out well enough. Get the grips I want. Crappy Sasae attempt with hips out leads to kesa-getame. THINGS I DID WELL: Got my grips and moved well on my feet. THINGS I NEED TO IMPROVE: Same as the first match, I need to have my hips in when I attack feet to take advantage of it. If my hips are back, I can't do ANYTHING. Fix my hip position on that sasae and this matc...

As I get older, my competition will just continue to get younger and I'm going to have to adjust and get better. As you can see, David is quite large. He's easily 4 inches taller than me, and probably 50-70 lbs heavier. Watching this today, it's not as bad as I thought originally. I'll fight a lot of people who are a lot bigger than me. I need to just stay in good position, and the focus REALLY...

Second match of the day was against Corey, a teammate from USA Stars. Senior Elite is going to be full of people as big, strong, and fast as he is, so this is another example of how I'm just going to have to get better. THINGS I DID WELL: This time I came forward. Last time we fought, I circled and backed. I matched his movement and circled well at the beginning. I attacked first. It was a CRAP...

They don’t know how to hang a US flag vertically in OKC‽ Pathetic. Stars are *always* top left 🤦‍♂️ Don’t believe me? Google image search “US Congress floor” and take a good look at the flag. That’s the *only* way to display the US flag vertically

Did you submit him?? Why did he tap so aggressively?

I had hurt my wrist really badly the match before. If you watch the beginning I can’t grip his collar. I have to just go to a wrestling head tie. When I threw, after I bumped him down into his back, I think I had his arm pushed across his face and was squeezing that. So a really tight hold got tighter because his arm was across his face. He couldn’t breathe and probably panicked.

Ugg. That's a rough one. Green belts shouldn't lose to yellow belts. You two didn't look massively mismatched on weight (despite an and up division). Normally at those belt levels the goal should be to ensure you win cleanly without injuring your opponent. Still, hats off to your opponent... yellow belt got you pretty clean.
