Audi R8 4.2l AC Compressor Replacement
This is video is how to replace an AC compressor on a 2008 - 2012 Audi R8 with a 4.2l Engine. The manufacture wants you to completely remove the engine and tranmission in order to gain access to the components, this is not the case at all! It can be done with everything still in the vehicle. Special thanks to FCP Euro on their great parts and quick delivery! I cant say enough good things about them I have been using them for years with all of my Euro market vehicles.
Here is a list of the parts used from FCP Euro

    • @corbinhbucknerjr558

      It doesn't matter. Once each cylinder is set at zero lash, it's 3/4 turn no matter where the cylinder is in the firing order. You can do the 3/4 as you zero each cylinder, or set all of them at zero, then just go to each valve and give 3/4 turn in one go round.

    Ok it came out!!!! Believe it or not, my 12 year old managed to do it. He rotated it and I use a pry bar to slightly nudge it for ward and it popped straight out. Nearly landed on his head but he was VERY happy with himself. So it rotated slightly anti clockwise at and angle and then a little nudge forward and you’re home. Thanks again for all the help.

    Hey man, Ok! I am getting ass kicked. I have everything off (6 little ac driveshaft bolts removed) and the three AC bolts out but she just won’t rotate. Just so I am clear, am I trying to rotate the compressor clockwise? You hand movement right at about 16:40secs suggests clockwise but she just jams tight. I am so close to having this thing on the bench it is killing me. .

    • @tsgarage523

      The shaft and flange will stay in the car for now until you get the compressor out of engine bay. Once that’s out you can slide the shaft out and separate it in a vice

    • @tsgarage523

      Yeah, you’re gonna have to rotate it. You might just have to use the prybar to bend the exhaust manifold, heat shield a little to give it enough from the squeeze out of it.

    Hi there from the UK. I am currently carrying out this job on my R8 (on axle stands laying on my back)😅 It is going very well with your guidance and I am just about to unbolt the compressor. My question is “can I remove the compressor with undoing the drive shaft” From what I can see will she not rotate happily, pull slightly forward and then down through the hole with the shaft on? Cheers for the great guide, I was about to put this into Audi and have my trousers pulled down. 😂

    This low compression from the valves being tight: could it cause a no start at all? Has spark and starter fluid but no start, not even a sputter. This is after I just did my heads

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523 Рік тому

      Yes that could definitely cause low compression but I would suggest looking at the ignition timing first and make sure the distributor is in correctly after all of that work. Even if the valves were tight it would try to fire. It sounds like timing is off to me. Good Luck!

    I was negotiating with a dealership for a 2012 r8 until I saw numerous videos on this common problem . I am assuming heat destroys the compressor considering is the compressor is up against the engine and under the engine My question is would wrapping the compressor with fiber glass wrapping work in order to keep the heat off the compressor Thanks

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523 2 роки тому

      I wouldn't think heat is to blame for the failure of these compressors. The feedback that I have had from owners is that failure typically happens when they are under acceleration and a loud bang / pop is heard. My best guess would be that the compressor has issues with vibrations due to the "drive shaft" that turns the unit, or it could be an overall level of pag oil used as well. When the compressors fail the internal shaft separates and explodes the case.

    • @meetpaulcraig
      @meetpaulcraig 2 роки тому

      @@tsgarage523 would this suggest that the compressor unit is more likely to fail while the ac is on and similtaniously under high acceleration.

    • @tsgarage523

      Yes I would perform that without hesitation if it was needed. This particular vehicle only had 10k on it and the valves were in great shape.
