Just your average Texas MTB rider. Well maybe slightly more than average. DFW series racing, local trails, builds and vlogs. I've always loved riding bikes and I'm so happy to share it with everyone!
Ozark Trail G1 explorer gets smart. IGPSport 630 unboxing, install and review
I had to take advantage of a Black Friday deal on this computer, heart rate monitor wheel speed sensor and cadence sensor for only $179. I installed it on the Ozark Trail G1 explorer, reviewed it and gave it my initial impressions.

Ozark Trail G.1 gets brakes! Zoom X-tech cable pull hydraulic brakes

I wanted to upgrade the brakes on the Ozark Trail G1 explorer for some time now. One of the biggest gripes that I have with the bike is how noisy they were coming to stops. How did this upgrade do? Will they work better than the originals? Would I recommend them to anyone wanting them for their gravel bike or bike in general?

Lost my food, blew up my legs, only made 50 miles, trail conditions were rough in some areas. But the weather was great and the bike was perfect!
Ozark Trail G.1 Explorer 100 Mile gravel bike review

After riding this bike 100 miles on mixed terrain from gravel roads to mountain bike trails and some road riding I figured a review would be due. So far the bike has lived up to my expectations, well exceeding them as a matter of fact. So what have I done so far to the bike? What's next? Thanks for watching!

Got me the small V.2 Wahoo Bolt. It's so small and lightweight, the battery life is just perfect for about 3-4 days of riding.
So far this has worked perfectly since I've updated it. And for the features I'm very happy with it! You can't go wrong with wahoo parts either!
250$ and if the will to enhance fits the bankaccount its doable with 2000-2500$ to get down the weight with 3kgs+ and up the speed as well. Wheelset, fork, brakes etc. Aliexpress do some deacent deals on good products. Not just crap. Before anyone yells antichina at me 😂, where is 90% bikes made..? Taiwan and China. Period. This bike fits most wallents and that is what it should be out on the market. Probikes is desirable, yes! But most of us dont have sponsors. We ride to enhanche condition and to have fun, and even to get to and from work etc. Splendid video and keep it up.
What tires?
WTB Riddler 700c x 45
Also in the DFW area, here are my thoughts on the IGPSport 630 after about 6 months and 2000 miles of use. No speed dropouts. The speed sensor is used only when the GPS signal is lost. Make sure the GPS is set to GPS+GAL+BD+QZSS. You should be able to just do away with the speed sensor. You can edit the fields on each page of the display with whatever data you want, I've done that to mine to see the data I'm most interested in. I have no problem with the brightness set at 70 or 80% even on the sunniest summer days.
Once I did the updates it was perfect! But I did notice and agree, the speed sensor becomes useless as it's goin off gps it seems.
@@averagetexasmtber Glad you got it working!
Useful video
Thanks! After I did the updates it works perfectly!
I just found your channel. My Trek 4500 is getting old and needs some TLC, I’m thinking of selling and getting an Ozark Trail. I must admit, not crazy about the color, but I could live with it.
I'll tell you, it kind of grows on you! I swapped out the chrome fasteners for black ones and with the WTB tires it really stands out.
😎👍👍
I absolutely love the bike. The dropbar wouldn't work for me... backaches. Went for flatbar 15° rise. The original derailleur would quickly go outta whack with indexing. Swapped it for Shimano rd-m310. $28... shifting is much better. New Vespeton tires 700x38. Today I'm going to upgrade the brake rotors. Is that California gym in the background? Looks like the same model as mine.
Not sure about the gym truth be told. We got it for free so... Lol. Glad your bike is riding better with little upgrades like the derailleur and tires!
Agreed about those brakes……not so great
several ppl have mentioned that the bb sets abnormally low. 165 arms maybe? between that and& having to switch out at least the rear wheel, for a free hub, made me decide to buy a different bike.
I’m waiting on these to arrive for my g1. I also just routed a nicer low compression jagwire rear brake cable and housing. Hoping that helps. My g1 the rear rotor was warped right off the bat.
I think the addition of a new cable and housing will help with the pull on the rear brake. Good call. I hope it works out well for you!
I have used the Zoom X-tech brakes on the same bike I got 5 months ago. They are great. I have installed them on 3 other bike builds/restomods. Have used as an alternative to the TRP RD/RD version. The X-tech are comparable to TPR plus lighter and more clearance for tight rear frames.
That's good to hear they are working well on your bikes! Hopefully I'll have the same luck!
I just replaced the brake pads on my G.1, it got rid of the noise and improved the braking performance.
I was thinking of just doing the pads but wanted to give these a shot. Thankfully if I decide to put the original brake calipers back on it'll be very easy to do.
Cool. I'm going to get one. Seems like a good bang for the buck. I haven't ridden a bicycle in over 30 years and if would be fun to work on. Good Show.
For what you pay vs what you get so far its seemed to be a great value! Have fun once you get one and enjoy!
I will second that this is a great value for price. As always be careful with Walmart assembled bikes. The technicians mainly do something else at the store and aren't experts in bike assembly.
Did you pay the extra $80 for fedex or did you use the free shipping?
I did the free shipping. I was shocked at how quickly they got here to Texas!
New subscriber gonna get a Bike soon.
I appreciate your support! This is for sure a bike I would recommend wholeheartedly !
I really want to get one of these to experiment with. Like putting on a set of 26" wheels I have laying around.. Maybe an E-Gravel Bike setup with the spare 27.5" ebike setup I have..
It would be the perfect bike for sure. Sturdy and internal cable routing
nice video. i bought the bike i want to see other peoples version.
Stay tuned! More upgrades and rides coming!
I replaced the drop handlebars for flat style, then added standard shifters and brake levers. But guess what... Walmart now carries this very same bike with flat handlebar. The choice is up to you
And the new one has 8 speeds and upgraded rear derailleur too
That area of the trail definitely needs work. I biked this earlier this year and was biking through serious water
Thankfully it sounds like they are making improvements to the trail. A survey crew I talked to said they're working on it from Paris to Celeste. Just didn't get a time frame for it.
@@averagetexasmtber I hope they are. When I was there I had asked locals about it, on the east side, and they said “they’ve been planning it for years” It’ll be a nice trail when it’s done
When I went through there was litteraly snapping turtles and snakes swimming in the water that was supposed to be the trail! I bailed once the snake swam in front of me lol, hit the pavement
Oh yeah, I'll be going around Wolfe City next time for sure!
Great video, I was right with you all the way...
I appreciate it! Hopefully next time I can make the full ride (technically half the route) to Paris! Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't! Appreciate you!
Great video. There are Dollar Generals in Celeste, Wolfe City, and Ladonia. I usually pick up a snack and drinks when I go through the towns.
Thanks! I really should have grabbed something. Even the diner in Roxton would have been perfect. They even had a hamburger deal going on. But I think at that point it was just a little too late.
good video. Every time I see one of these videos about this bike, it makes me want to buy one even more. I have a specialized roll elite "entry-level" bike that was around eight or 900. And I'm sure it's a nicer bike, than the explorer, but at under $1000, any big brand bike still comes with entry-level crappy tourney, sunrace etc stuff. There is no way my bike is five times better than the Explorer. To my knowledge, you're the only person that has mentioned a critical consideration with this bike; which is at this price point you don't have to tiptoe around with it. People talk about how crappy Walmart bikes are, but if you think about it, who mostly are using those bikes? It's children typically. do you think they're being really careful and respectful of their bikes? No, they're throwing them down in the driveway, They're leaving them out in the rain, and they're jumping ant infested plywood ramps with them. & they last for years. and there's 10s of millions of them being rode right now. I wonder how long those 2-10k carbon bikes would last being treated that way. im looking at buying a gravel bike now, and what ppl want for used junk is insane, and forget about buying a name brand. they'll want 2-300 off the new price for a 10 yr old worn out bike. thanks again
Happy to do the videos and review of this thing. Tomorrow I'll be taking it on a 60 mile gravel ride. Stay tuned for a video of that! And if you haven't subscribed it would be cool if you could!
Use to ride bikes all the time. Haven’t rode for a long time. Bought this bike. Decided to ride to work. Work is 33 miles away. Left at 4am. Got to work at 9am. Butt was sore for 2 days. Other than that it’s a good bike lol
It's certainly not a speedster but a new seat would do wonders!
Dude, Thanks. Live in Dallas and have ridden Mineral Wells a few times (far drive) and didn't even know NETT existed. MTB'r here who has drank the Gravel Bike Cool-Aid.
Happy to have shared! Here in the next few weeks I may try Farmersville to Paris maybe... I think a lot of that is still rather unkept. Guess I'll find out! It's just the out and back I don't want to do. Don't forget to subscribe to find out how it goes.
Is the frame small or medium size?
This one is a medium frame but they do offer a small as well
I would have ridden it to New Boston just to get some dark beans from Maria's Tex Mex restaurant 😋
The full route to New Boston is for sure going to happen!
I have a G1 and love it. Didn’t at first, but I flipped the stem and added a comfy seat. I’ve used it on both paved and trails, but do avoid the serious terrain. Perhaps you could do a short video about the Wally World bike rack? I recently got one and made one trip with it. I don’t love it, but it did carry a cruiser bike with fenders and basket along with my mountain bike. Neither ended up on the highway.

Quite a few videos of this Walmart bike have popped up for me in You Tube. I keep watching them. Surprisingly enough, they all say the bike is a very good value. It's about $250. Then I look at bikes in bike shops. That does look like value.
I genuinely feel like the bike is a home run for most riders out there. I've had it on MTB trails, gravel and paved. It keeps exceeding my expectations.
what did you do to adjust the bike??
Just a very minor shifter adjustment. That's it.
Interesting
Interested to hear the long term reviews😊
Agree
Rode Harry Moss trail for Moss Monday and it was almost flawless. Did the judgement day loop (all but red loop) and dropped the chain on one of the more significant creek crossings. But this is a gravel bike, not a mountain bike. Hence my almost feeling. But so far as a gravel bike... Perfect. So far
Under 12 hours start to finish is insane! I finally finished at 11:00pm.
Its a long day for sure! Congrats on finishing it up. I know lots of people who didn't!
Question, what did you eat?!!
Honestly I could have eaten more. I had a full bag of bison beef jerky, multiple water bottles, Gatorade, 5 gu squeeze packets, 2 bananas and more pickle juice than I care to mention lol. Hopefully just good things about the bike. She's an older bike but still fast. And hey, if you haven't subscribed to the channel I'd be cool if you would!
Way to go! Congratulations! I saw you at Harry moss, before staring, all the guys pointing at your Gt on Facebook 👍🏼
Do you think it is safe for my 12y old who has never biked on a trail before ?
Id say it should be fine. The most difficult part of this trail is loop one. Another good option would be Rowlett Creek Preserve.
My chinese made raceface next carbon handle bar is more than 2 years old now. Never had any problem with it of course I know it's limitation so I only use it on xc trailing. Yesterday I got knocked out of the bike handle grip slammed on the pavement minor bruises but the bar survived.
Now this a nice bike.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
How is the background noise louder than your voice?
Good microphone on my phone... Or maybe a bad microphone... Lol
Been running them for over a year now and they've been through several xc races and a ton of damage. I have cracked a Chinese seat post but that was in an aluminum frame and I suspect maybe the aluminum was too sharp at the joint.
It's good to hear you've had success with them! At this point I think they'll keep doing just what they should. I was pretty confident in them after I tested them out too.
take them off ur bike dont buy shit carbon parts the money u save is not worth it when ur crippled
@@efdbjon2114 I appreciate the concern for sure. But from what I've seen in failures of these kinds of parts it's an installation error. Over torqued fasteners, lack of carbon paste or just plain out abuse. I do check them regularly along with everything else on the bike and as stated earlier, no issues to speak of. But again, thanks for the concern. 👍
Being an older guy who recalls when aluminum was still the thing and carbon was just getting into the MTB space we often said to ourselves. Aluminum bends where carbon simply fails. And no one wanted to be the victim of a failure. So we stuck with aluminum until carbon became mainstream and more affordable. It's great that you've had no issues, though you have to ask yourself, with all the nice components on a decent frame, why go with an off brand for this one part?
It was quite honestly a test if nothing else. I did quite a bit of bench testing prior to install as well. Don't get me wrong, the thought still crosses my mind when I really put power down or go over certain things. But like Ivan Drago said in Rocky "if he dies, he dies" lol.
I've had several carbon bars from China usually off of Ebay with no problems. My son broke a zero rise bar on a crash, but that's when you expect/ accept a break. I even ordred and ride carbon drop flared bars on my gravel bike!
I've been really impressed with them honestly. Even name brand bars like Enve are made in China
Nope, nothing from Amazon goes on my bike...ever.
Someone likes to overpay ;)
My bars and seat are Amazon purchases. I've been nothing but happy with them. And the wheels are from elite. Another direct from China manufacture. And yet again, nothing but good things. But at the end of the day, whatever makes you happy.
@@Mchacz8008 No, as someone who works in the bike industry, I've seen way too many accidents with carbon fiber... I will definitely by parts but would not from Amazon. But glad that you are having good luck!
Dude is loaded up on all kinds of junk from china. Wow, how surprising that it was cheap, wild.
@@jackiegammon2065 bruh, go look how many "american" bike brands are made in China.
I have the pro36 Elitewheels since two months on my Stumpjumper. I got them for 550Euro. So far the are incredible. I went with the pro hubs ( Dt-Swiss 350 clone). The hubs with the wheels roll like a dream! Cheers from Switzerland
Good job on your race! TMBRA had to cancel one of our races and moved the venue to this location for this year. What category did you race in? The race for us will be 4/28
This was the one lap beginner race. I wasn't sure what class to race in back then. Its a great course for sure!
@@averagetexasmtber you going to be at the race next week?
@@512MTB4LIFE Im thinking it may be rained out. Plus ft worth bike fest is next Saturday too and I'm leading the points in mens intermediate so I may have to go. Lol
@@averagetexasmtber nice man! I would let that take precedence also lol.
I will be at that race this year. First race
just wondering if you looked at the pro33 vs pro36 and why you went with the 33s. Not easy to understand the difference and which would be better. The only thing I can see is 27mm vs 30mm ID and weight difference
I had looked into both and the 33 seemed to fit my riding style and area that I ride/race in better. Weight savings was of course a reason but I doubt Id feel the difference between the two. I'm still very happy with them and look forward to doing more builds with wheels from Elite in the future. Also, because I primarily ride XC and not enduro these were better. The Gnar wheels they have now are primarily focused on that style but they were not released yet. So the 36 was the beefier option. But still, I'd choose the 33 over the 36
Hello ! I have the same bike still in 650 wheel set, I will " upgrade" it to 29, so please, can you measure the distance between tire and seat stay ? Is possible to mount it in the same wheel set like yours( same measure s) a tire in 29x2,35 ? Thanks in advance !
A 2.35 rear will be close! But it should work. The 2.25 rear tire fits really well and I've not run into any traction issues
@@averagetexasmtberOk, so I will try 2,25 first. Thanks a lot !
Happy to help! And if you haven't already feel free to subscribe to the channel!
Curious on ride and long term review.
Same here! Unfortunately in the DFW area when it rains... well the trails close. And it's raining today. So I'll have to give it some time to dry out and see how it does. Fingers crossed they don't snap on me
Rain may be my fault, I live in DFW and just bought a new bike lol
Must be a dang nice bike to have a storm like this lol. But congrats on the new bike!
Mine took 17 days to arrive, also upgraded to 240 hubs, rims here in the states would cost x2 the price
Agreed. Twice the price for sure! Hope they're treating you as good as mine are treating me!
Awesome ride! Where is this located? I’m also in Texas
This is Rowlett Creek preserve.
