The Wheel of Time is an interesting one. You have about a 1-3% chance of being born with the spark which lets you touch the One Power (magic), and if you're a man.... you're screwed. Each time you touch the Power the Dark One touches you, and you start to have paranioa and hallucinations that are *not a mental illness* but are literally the embodiment of evil warping your mind until you lash out violently and the most at risk are your family and friends. If you somehow survive long enough, your body will start to rot. And if the Aes Sedai (the women magic users) catch you, they will "gentle" you, cutting you off from the Power, which makes life not worth living anymore. And thats just one thing that happens in this world. There is so much worse, but I'm avoiding dropping spoilers here.

In all honesty dead space universe is absolutely terrifying Imagine the universe is literally dying and yours scraping around trying to salvage anything only for an alien race comes in and eats you and the worst part is that you are not really dead your conscious is part of that allien, and they themselves are dying because there's no food or recourses so you are experiencing death all over again and slower and more painful

Necropolis 28, or Idols of Torment? One is a city on a dead world where Everybody's Dead, Dave. Warbands fight for scraps of magical energy that sustains their forms and prevents them becoming sentient dust; and there is still an imbalance of haves and have-nots. The other is an afterlife in ruins after Heaven and Hell, which were both creations of Man imagining they were there, collapse and leave a bleak landscape where warbands of servitors of the Primordials fight to harvest the energy from dead people to recycle into the universe.

I believe Worm is the darkest. Humans across multiple timelines suffer, but the worst is Earth Bet, which has a ticking time bomb attached to it that will go off many years after all the major characters die of old age and not even be that narratively satisfying despite all the suffering and work done to stop it of the supers era. A Shaggy Dog story. Stellaris is also decently dark. At least Warhammer 40,000's Fanatic Purifiers and Determined Exterminators are very small in number (other than the endgame of most Chaos factions) compared to some Stellaris games.

The darkest universe could be whatever the dimension Event Horizon ship went into. We never get to see that in movie but the way Dr Wier described it & by the end becoming a horrific looking minion himself its clear sign how dark that is.

Going way way back, there's always "The Bug Wars" by Robert Asprin. The basic idea is that there are no humans; the universe is just a battleground between insects and reptiles with no end, no pity, no mercy. Forever.

I'm surprised that Eclipse Phase is not on this list. What's Eclipse Phase? It's a story of humanity's extinction. Humanity lost the war with ASI called TITAN. 95% of population was destroyed over two years. Earth has fallen. Transhumanism won and you can't even escape by death, your cortical stack will be uploaded to a new morph (body). But the most terrifying aspect of Eclipse Phase for me - Pandora Gates. In the first days after Brontsky's Event (the last contact with TITANs), on the Saturn's satellite Pandora explorers found strange structure clearly non-human origin (everyone thinks that TITANs built it, but no one really knows). When structure was activated, it created portal to another star system. In next few years, 4 more gates were found all over the system. And humanity learnt the truth. Galaxy is dead. There are many ruins around, but only true aliens known to humanity were met in our solar system. On the other side of Gates - nothing. Combine it with the Exsurgent Virus that turns humans into monsters and fact that humanity itself becomes less and less human. This is really an ultimate horror.

Screw warhammer and “I have no mouth” Dead Space. In the end of 3rd game we literally see 3 planet sized monsters kill Earth

Just wanna say, the gantz anime tucked. Lotta weird with the Mc and rest of the main cast trying to sexually assault the girl character. Half the scenes were in a very fan service-y light rather than a "This is the brutality that is brought of people when they are desperate or mad with power"

Rewatched Gantz a couple weeks ago, hell yeah. Oh, though I see you went for the animated series; I was talking about the live-action movies, where there is no third option. From what I've read, the manga also has something to do with Germans having invented Gantz? Sounds like it ruins the story.

My favourite one is the SCP universe's SCP-140, "Chronicle of the Daevites"- a book which rewrites itsself by feeding on your blood. The book is about an ancient civilization called the Daevites, an empire built on cannibalism, slavery, human sacrifice, and black magic - and the scary part is that every time it comes into contact with ink, or preferably blood, it changes - the histories described become more and more recent, literally changing history and ultimately, potentially threatening *our own time*...

Lovecraftian Horror

People will point to universes like 40k where most humans still lead recognizably "normal" lives despite constant war and terrors from beyond the stars. Meanwhile in Half Life 2 humanity is trapped on an Earth rendered near lifeless, in its perpetual final generation, fighting a scrappy, desperate resistance against extradimentional occupation forces that can change the landscape of planets on a whim.

Well in Gantz case they would stop fighting when aliens stop coming to earth.

Out of these four, the Cruelty squad one seems the worst. At least in Gantz, Mandela catalogue and Iron lung you have the option to just lie down and die when you realise everything is hopeless. In Cruelty squad, you try to die, only to wake up and be met by the smug face of your boss with a shit eating grin saying "We expect you back in the office on Monday."

Glimmer rats, that world is brutal. Sadly very short and can be hard to find.

I love how the dark forest theory means that we are fucking up the entire universe by constantly sending out signals of our existence.
