Lonnie Mack - Why? - 1963
Greil Marcus selected this track by Lonnie Mack as one of the great vocals in rock n roll and he detailed why in his 2009 lecture "The Songs Left Out of "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency". Greil described 'Why?' thus: "a soul ballad so torturous, so classically structured, that it can uncover wounds of your own. Mack's scream at the end has never been matched, God help us if anyone ever tops it".
Greil Marcus is right and as such it is only correct that it exists on UA-cam for all to behold.

Wow! How have I never heard this before??
Hell yeah pipes!
Steve gains of Lynard Skynard used to cover this song before he hit the big time.also was an influence on Stevue Ray Vaun.
Thank you for this, my first guitar hero , Honky Tonk 65 etc, bless you
Been with Lonnie since 1966, the Lonnie Mack teen club, covington ky. Oh yea.
I remember playing in Hamilton Ohio with Bill Jones and the Young Breeds. I was sitting in and Lonnie comes in and plays a whole set with ys for a handful of people. This was 1965
What a great guitar player
This is unbelievable. The absolute wham of the Memphis man!
Very good sad song beautiful ❤️
Lonnie's voice was so silky smooth and seems almost too soft until he unleashes that tormented wail. It explodes from the deepest, most desperate pool of his emotion. It's hard to believe it's the same guy. His innovative licks were inspirationally creative. He definitely wasn't a cookie cutter attempted-soul performer. and then........ once you get set up by that monumental wail..... he screams. .................... yeah, then he screams........ !
You can hear where Stevie Ray Vaughan got his vocal phrasing from
One of the most passionate songs I ever heard. I am a music nut and I never heard it until year. Why was it never played mainstream radio??
I already had a band in 1963 and when we heard Lonnie Mack, it was satori. Unfortunately, he was swept aside by an explosion of lovebale moptops, and the fat greaser had little teen appeal. He is one of the unsung legends of rock and roll.
A fantastic song and a wonderful band. Lonne Mack have just died 2016 after this song he never made any fame. Im born in 1962
Everything about this song is great except for THAT DAMNED SQUEEKING BASS DRUM PEDAL!
Really? I listened to this song many times and never noticed it.
excuse that would be my grandfather “second best drummer during this time”
@@DanaDyer-vv6tk Ron Grayson was incredible - "Lonnie On The Move" gives most drummer goosebumps.
I love this song ❤
06.33 He was talking about APPS Back in 2011 A True Visionary
The back up vocals are to far up in volume.....horrible.
Go away...
amazing tune thanks for uploading
Love this Dang!
Great !!!
Everything about this is right on. Lonnie had a special talent.
I have the painting of SRV and Hendrix up in the "clouds".......lovely painting of them jamming together...only it should be a threesome with Lonnie Mack along side....
One of the great songs by one of the most influential guitarist ever.
Steve Gaines and his good friend Ace gave me this gift
THE GENIUS WHICH IS ENO.
SUPER TALENT I MET HIM WHEN I WAS A KID IN MILWAUKEE HE INSPIRED ME TO PLAY GUITAR,RIP BROTHER.
There is only 10 great black rockers and there is only 10 great white soul boys/girls. Mr. Mack is absolutely a great soul singer and a fab guitar player. Who the f*** need Clapton? This is the shit! Do not RIP, Mack, play your stuff in heaven too!
Why all of the British anchors sound like annoyed grandpas.
I was a bass player ,in a band in Cincinnati in 1963 .I was 18 and saw Lonnie Mack ,live, several times .I bought this album and would recommend it to anyone, who loves R&B.album was called the wham of that Memphis man !
This is an amazing song. Have you heard The Accents version
@svetlanakuznetkova4292 no, I have not.
@@donayers5925 it’s a 60s garage version of this song
@svetlanakuznetkova4292 I found it on Google. Sounds good !
@@donayers5925 I know right
That final scream never fails to bring a year to my eye...and that playing? Whoa Nellie! It's no bloody wonder SRV introduced Lonnie as "the baddest guitar player I know!" R.I.P., you beautiful, noble soul..."rest you gentle, sleep ye sound." 💓
Very seldom can I listen to every single tune from 1 artist,, well Lonnie MAC IS 1 OF THE VERY FEW!! R.I.P. HEAVEN MUST SOUND BEAUTIFUL!
Completely busts the myth that it took the 'British Invasion' to introduce white Americans to black American R & B.
Creativity is like water, it seeps out wherever there is an outlet.
Just fantastic!
WOW!
Not only the guitar, the voice, extremely awesome. R. I. P. to one of the greatest blues man ever
Stevie Ray Vaughan loved this guy, I can fully see why, he's insane
jeff Beck plays a tribute to him at his shows too. Lonnie influenced a lot of British players. He was doing it first
great singer .thanks a lot lonnie to make this world a better place.
REST IN PEACE BROTHER
Lonnie was a friend and mentor. This is one of my favorite songs. Lonnie is at his absolute best on this song. He was a shy, quiet man who cried through his guitar. God bless you Lonnie. Thanks.
Paxman is such a grumpy twat
Saint James Infirmary with different lyrics
Phila Delphy hmmmm not a blues not in 4 also a v different story
Why
I love his song Spinning Away.
Neil Young was inspired by Lonnie. He played a Flying V on his 1973 Time Fades Away Tour but it kept going out of tune and strings breaking.
Listening to Neil's playing an out of tune guitar wouldn't make much difference.
such an inspiring person
I LOVE #NEWSNIGHT. I LOVE THE #BBC
RIP Lonnie. And while you're at it, RIP the roof off.
There are songs that are made only for one singer, no one else can can put the same passion in that song and this is one of them.
Steve Gaines definitely did.
@@littlebeanchild Amen! I thought Ace Morland and Smoot Mahudi did this awesome song justice ✌️
Love to hear Eno. Thank you!
