The Bowdrill and No bag challenge Was one that youtuber Hampshire outdoors and survival came up with On the first Challenge night. This film is about four people executing this version of the one night survival challenge. E03 is a combination of two challenges in which four survivalists head out with no bags no boxes no rucksacks and attempt to successfully complete a bowdrill fire all survival...

Well you might want to know what this is. It is a water filtration system. A few friends have asked about this and groups here on youtube seem interested in it . I have had it and tested it for exactly one year now. Why did i purchase it? I purchased it to minimise weight for long hikes. Its presence would allow me "live off the land" instead of carrying 3 kilos of water on a 27km hike. But as ...

Great job! Something I want to try sometimes..
@@DCOutdoors it's a journey brother . A long hard journey. A kin to learning how to spell the word "special " when you were 8 years old .
@@lifesahobby haha!
@@DCOutdoors you know what I mean .
Love it mate, I once followed a series of Cindy dolls on trees marking a route into a camp, I followed them and came across a fellow lover of the outdoors making a brew, nice bloke ended up having a brew and a chat, pity buzz dident work though 👍
Great video and love the drone footage 👍 Glad you had the weather on your side as there is nothing worse than trying to create a flame using a wet fart 🤣 After all those hours of practise you are starting to make it look easy now so huge respect mate 🙏
@@TJPockets huge respect back at you brother and all those who have supported this awful sounding project . The ignition was touch and go even with good condition s

At first, you couldn't get the bloody bow drill to work to save your life. Now, you're a fair dinkum expert.
atmospheric conditions in ireland are not exactly the perfect geographic location where this skill was developed. Ireland is more a place of rubbing mushrooms on sticks or using flint. This Bow drill technique is suited to warmer climates. The chances of getting a few days with relative humidity below 40% consistently also plays a bit of a factor with the auto ignition . is it right tools and wrong day or is it right method any day... I just don't know. anyone even an expert will have difficulty with this if it was a drizzling rain day. I'm not making excuses for myself. its a difficult topic of which i only know scant anecdotal bits of
Love the thumbnail.. to this.... Nice one

Well done Owen 😊
Well done! A great skill you can now pass onto others 😊
Nice! You've got this skill figured out now.
Very beautiful video 👍

Cousin Henry ... The reference hardly anyone knows I bet
@@lifesahobby 🤣🤣🤣 but we know sir we know
Good on you mate, proud moment, one off the list 👏
It's the end of learning a topic I never really thought was me baz . If you'd asked me a year ago about this I probably would have talked about climbing a hill instead . This moment is up there with walking 35 miles in 1 day .. or climbing up to 14000 feet . .. especially when coupled with how it has to be learnt . Even while you watch my hand go back and forth. The top hand is varying the downward pressure just a tiny bit on or off . . The grip of a foot , the tightness of string , it's all more than I imagined . Two months of work for a second of pleasure. Id love to use this now in a one night survival scenario . To be able to bring an extra item . . Or to do it with nothing . I'm not lighting fires right now , the place is like a tinder box .
@@lifesahobby fair play mate, it takes skills which you have mastered , respect, and yes everything is bone dry at minute, wise decision 👍
@Bushybazoutdoors there is more to this , finding wood in the wild. . I am using woods here which were purchased as I could hardly get any results with any wood I found . I guess the word basswood comes from its association with the base . Maybe next year I'll give other woods a go . Aged holly was the closest I got to embers . That was using a battery hand drill attached
@@lifesahobby it is hard sorcing it in the wood etc, differant kettle of fish, ive tried it myself a few times wile out camping in the past, dont mind saying I've failed, been close but never successful, it's trial by error mate, we can only try and learn from our attempts, practice make perfect thay say, lol
You’ve got it down to a fine art now 😁
There's a longer version. Where I fail on the first attempt , drop the ember , curse a little . If there was a getting it. It's got now . I can't say I've had much make me happier than yesterday evening in the wood . Such a silly thing to make me happy . Cheers phil
@@lifesahobby it's the little things mate, loved the music, was it a mozart remix

Nice one Owen.
Tenacity. I knew you would get it to work.
looking forward to the next episode 👍🏕
That's super cool!
It is with much joy I share it today .
Very good job in creating fire. That's a survival skill we all should have. I however don't even know the nouns that go with the tools you are using.
@@BuyingSpace The only way I learned all this was by sitting down and failing and learning the wrong words . The hearth board is the bottom piece, the drill is the pointy bit that turns . The bow is the wood and string . The bearing block is what you push down with My first bearing block was a shot glass. It's a horror to learn . But once learned it is so cool to know .
Hours of practice finally pays off well done owen🔥🙂👍🏻
@@JUSTJAMIE82 days of frustration 🔥. I am glad I took a break from it . Starting back yesterday I was almost in tears restringing the bow about three times . The relative humidity on my barometer said 40 percent also . Which I think is important. The drill is a new drill . Made from a compressed fibre board type dowel thing . It wears down fast . I angled tip of it towards the knotch and it started spitting out a snake of sooty dust . String was fine Paracord , wrapped three times and started off almost too tight but stretched. By the end the Paracord was shot . . I'm a huge believer now in the perfect bow , the perfect one off string , so tight . But yet to be seen under pressure in the woods. With flys , dampness . But a little hope in my soul . I really appreciate all the good vibes Jamie . Especially those who know the pain. ❤️
Nice to see, sir. You’ve got your kit sorted, as that was a quick pile of viable ember. I wonder about the type of woods, fire-board, the drill and the bearing block. And that tinder lol, “Now!”. I noticed how your bearing block hand bopped back and forth, unstabilized. Maybe try with your fireboard foot and bearing block hand on the same side, and you could brace the hand with the leg. Up on the back knee gets the front lower leg vertical. Cheers from Alberta.
@@johnnyliminal8032 I am angling the drill to effect a pumping out of the fine dust . . It worked . That's all I care about at present . .. the drill is a compressed minced wood . But it wears down very quickly , it is very soft . Everything is soft . Even the string degrades after one use . But if it works under pressure I'll be happy.
Steel wool , .. a coffee filter , and some hairy stuff ..
@@lifesahobby Thanks, Owen. Or is your name Kieth? Seen someone call you that, a few times. Odd that UA-cam doesn’t show notifications of replies to my comments. For my comments on other chans, it does. Cheers. -John C.

Outstanding 👍 Give that man a cigar 🙏
Doing it in the back garden is easy... Ish. Well after doing all the tens of hours a month ago . I've been waiting a month for the right conditions here in Ireland. Which is when the weather heats up . Now it has to be done in a forest . I don't know which is more difficult , filming it or doing it . Filming bow drill is like the ultimate challenge. Cigar maybe on Thursday .
Good man 👍
My reply vanished ffs . Let's see if we can get it done in a forest. I am doing a one night survival challenge . This vid is just prepping all the bits ,

@@JamieHarding5 I didn't leave all the tinder out in the damp air today . The whole thing was done with a bit of frustration. . My main issue is the bow , I burned through loads of string because tight AF seems to be the only way for me . Also shifted the drill to an angle . Worked first time . It'll be another story though in the woods . No cuts . No fakery . .. so you will all be screwed watching that film . I hadn't lost the muscles or the technique. But the boredom of it all is still there . Pack is ready . Everything is ready . That's what this evenings test was about .
