Capturing a Guitar session by video and dissecting katana Go tones to build midi automation.
A few days ago. I started trying this idea of doing both a front facing video room capture and an iPad screen capture at the same time.
The audio captured is IN THE ROOM via the iPad Pro gen3 stereo mics, in playback over Bluetooth to my Nuraphones and also via the Air EX’s Bluetooth the sound seems fairly faithful and you will hear the acoustic sound of the strings when plucked and then the following delays in playback. If recording this via the Dolby On App you’s get the usb output only - maybe an idea to try that next.
It is not too often I really sit and listen to my own playback so trying this split of controller and player views kinda helps that.
The warts and all approach of being able to hear switch strikes, changes in pickups and having dual views of the same changes in tone to me it lets me review both sonically with no distractions of the apps, and then in app view I can try sifting out the setups of parameters in the BOSS Katana chains and rebuild em in the hxstomp. - an idea to test drive other drop and polyphonic pitch bends, in helix, and also with The Gamechanger Bigsby Pedal up front,
Yesterday I sat and really listened then sectioned up the video for easier seeking.
This runs through using the katana Go as the main guitar path.
In the beginning I’m running kat air ex as a backup path and playing through extra fx and delays.
I then drop to just the Go, by silencing the K-Air side and really work using the pedal blend and wah’s .
Did a good mess with the DC30 as both chorus and then as a 3rd echo delay in the Go’s chain.
Call it a guided noodle I guess but I’m trying to review what happens in a test drive and keeping track of what parameters I tend to get pulled towards when in the moment.
The sounds that most interested me:
Delays, trying out up to 5 delays active by mixing the Air EX and the GO chains in parallel.
Getting the Halo effect going
Go only 3 delay preset
Messing with the Feedback values in delay 1, 2, 3.
Kat Go only:
Pedal fx block:
Pedal Blend - in this play through I’m using my fingers to run the pedal fx. For the blend you would probably want a mix of an expression pedal and several specific drop levels. -24, -22, - 18, a sweep from -18 to +4, a sweep from +4 to + 14, a jump to +18,
Sounds here combined with the slow gear range from drums, to crystal gongs, to rumbling basslines. These would make good use of the pirate midi controllers !
If I keep getting pulled into using certain effects, some of that can be automated easily using OnSong.
One thing for sure, reviewing your own playing a day later, both by video and by ear will teach you a lot and make future mods .
00:00 Start with K-Air MIDI
00:46 Air EX preset 2 - lots of octaver choices to compare against the pedal blend.
01:02 Air EX preset 1… centa overdrive into octaver with dual pan delays and plate reverb - to run in parallel with the Go.
01:24 Air EX preset 3 - an exact copy of the 3C Ambient Clean patch with some choice fx on tap - supporting the Go.
01:18 Humaniser effect on Green
02:37 Let’s go with Purely the Go’s Ambient Clean and get to modding it.
03:15 Two octave drops to start a bass line.
03:35 Ethereal Zone +4 or 5 on the pedal blend.
03:43 Crystal jangles +21 to +23 maybe avoid full +24 or add EQ.
04:13 Crybaby Wah
05:33 Reso Wah
05:47 Pitch Blend effect.
07:30 Good old Earthly Rumbles
07:38 Eyes off the dials and pads - now just listen.
07:54 all drones are done by hand in the moment, a little excessive, to be adjusted down a bit.
08:29 Guitar Volume n Tone knobs adjusted.
09:17 In the room this produces a very 3D sound via the Air Ex speakers, modulating delay very evident.
10:38 Good Chorusing
11:49 Super dropped Bass line - what a rumble!
12:34 Crystals
12:57 Didgeridoo
14:35 Gongs - Tambourines?
15:41 Heavy drops - basslines for looping over.

When you connect a Katana Go into the aux-in of a Katana Air EX ? I just get lost in these sounds. The guitar here is running a BOSS WL20 into both the Katana Air Ex and the WL50. To get the signal received on both amps like this you may want to shut one off and pair it, shut the other off and pair it then both will light up when turned on. This is giving two katana signal paths. The Go’s stere...

I would strongly advise listening to this over headphones with a fair bass response. This is a further modification to the 3C Ambient preset and is a perfect example of W-Air MIDI App’s ability to change the typical WAZA Air limitations of a Katana Mk i into something a bit better than a Katana mk ii. The main idea of this preset is to bring up the FX parameter pane where things are reorganized...

      I would recommend you to join my various groups on Facebook. The Line6 Midi Mad Scientist Club I created to gather up midi enthusiasts and there you have a good community to help you get into the basics and move on up to fairly advanced stuff. That linked to many different groups covering controllers and connecting up midi pedals and making it all dance. Some great basic video content I'd recommend Scott Uhl's channel. He is a good guy. There are also some great midi books by Simon Glover over at Pirate Midi. I find for explaining this stuff the communities are really the best way to learn. If you like I do one on one lessons and consulting for getting your feet wet by video chats. Get in touch if interested. Usually I can take a total midi newbie to the stage of programming inside two 30 minute video sessions. It will really help if you run iOS , plenty of free apps in that to get started and figure out what gear you may need.

      You can yes but not natively, this does not exist, instead what I’m using here to make it work is an app available for iOS only, you know iPad, iPhone or a MacBook with m1 or better processor, it is called MIDI Patch from Stephane Villeneuve. Solves everything for the katana Go. You can use it with any midi controller or app.

My goal is to carry everything in both hands and in a backpack and in both hands. I was going to use everything that would take AA batteries, like my pedalboard power supply, drum machine, and Tascam 8trk recorder. They all take AA batteries. Is there a rechargeable battery that I could charge at home that would power my set up so I wouldn't need to buy and mess with all the AA batterys?? That would be a game changer for me right now. Right, what is happening here is this, hxstomp has a widi master which sends cc messages from command center on each snapshot, that runs wireless to my iPad, into the midi patch app which spits out sysex messages to choose presets wirelessly inside the Katana Go, so this is a totally wireless midi solution. The app is called MIDI PATCH, it is in development by Stephan Villeneuve, Same author of the W-air midi and K-air MIDI apps for the WAZA and katana airs. It will hopefully be published on the App Store. If you’re on Facebook hit him up and tell him you’re interested. This is unfortunately an iOS only app. This app is a super power solution as you can stack multiple midi messages, so jumping to a preset and toggling various effects is possible, this would give the presets in the katana go their own snapshot like capabilities, it’ll map to ANY midi controller be it hardware or apps like you use for setlist managers to jump around for you, kinda like sessions but this would let you integrate the katana go into any modeling system with midi. Lots of extra DSP for something like an hxstomp.

    • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist
      @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist 3 місяці тому

      @@JeffreyRutland I should think so, but one would need to run midi patch for sure, exactly how you’d do that would depend on running it in iOS, or perhaps directly on the Mac in question if it had an m1 processor or better, this is likely a question only Stephan can answer directly. You may want to message him directly from the App Store or on Facebook

    • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist
      @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist 4 місяці тому

      Indeed no midi over usb, though you could. Using wireless like this, I’m sending to and from my iPad which is hosting a new app MIDI PATCH by Stephan Villeneuve. The WIDI master ( you could use a WIDI jack too - probably better ) connects to the iPad, iPad sends sysex back to the katana go midi feed, change snapshots and you can control the Goks signal chain. This is great for my acoustic presets as I can call up the acoustic settings in the Kat Go and then the stomp can do really heavy duty jobs like the polyphonics for acoustic simulation, 12 string, poly capo etc. Like adding another 8 blocks to the hxstomp.

Kat air and Kat air ex and we have added the GO for pokin around with, so far the two things we have control over are direct preset selections and stage selection for go. This gets to be interesting if you start using the gear together.

      Pretty sure it is a type A. Boss typically is type B . Be aware that the midi cable from strymon has this big barrel with an optical isolator to stop any noise along your midi network. If you do somehow hear any weird squealing noises using an exp, then this is the likely cause. With most of my controllers this has yet to be an issue. Of course if you are looking at using multiple strymon pedals I'd recommend you get their green midi hub, it'll be perfect then and give you access to strymons Nixie editor

      I've been using mine direct into the aux in on my two katanas , direct link to the stereo speakers at 15w each, the sound is really excellent . I've not tried this yet into bigger monitors but with an iLoud at 40W it also sounds fantastic. With headphones your experience may vary a bit. I've used apple cheapy headphones, Nuraphones both the in ear buds and the big boys with the over the ear and mid to high buds that side into your ear canal, very nice. A pair of powered Marley headphones also good 😊 bit of an issue with cables moving. The question I get the most is do these beat the Waza Air. I think not . But I would have to admit that using these in stereo is a great thing. If you try the spatial modes esp the custom, you do come close to the waza air magic. Definitely not as freeing but having the ability to record and output to anything you want and the full MKii signal chain and few extra stereo effects, the thing is a no brainer.

    Alec - thanks for all you do! I’m a recently joined member from you FB groups and have learned a lot from you. I entered the Katana world last month with the Air EX, which has already blown me away with its capabilities for my new electric. My Katana Go arrives tomorrow and I know I’m going to be addicted to it with good headphones, and it made me wonder is there a way I could harness the Go with the EX and this video is helpful…but I don’t have the equipment you have in the chain. So a couple of questions - first, if I want to use the EX as a powered speaker for the Go via a trs aux cable, is there a way to bypass any coloration from the EX other than turning down everything except volume/master volume so it acts more like a flat response speaker? I’d want to hear externally what I could set up and hear via the headphones, so it would be more like a FRFR cabinet (which I can purchase, but I’d like to somehow avoid the cost and use the EX). My other question - what is the minimum equipment you’d recommend in the chain to use the wireless Go dongle to the EX? Is it everything you show in this video, or is there a more bare bones way. I’m a complete newbie, as I’ve only played acoustics up to last month, so no pedals, board, etc at this point.

      Firstly cheers for this comment. Means a lot. So the answers are both super simple, gotta love that right. First up to use the Kat Air EX, or the old style Kat air, yes just plug in a TRS lead. There is nothing else to do. The Aux in port taps into the end of the signal chain right before the power amp and speakers. Similar to any other speaker with an aux in, it’ll just amplify the Go’s output. Second question. To use the Go wirelessly like I am, all you need is another BOSS wireless receiver. That is it. Now I’d strongly recommend the BOSS WL50. If you go check out the Facebook group you’ll see both Juca Neri and JB Aubrey are using the smaller WL20L I think it’s called, plus a dual female TRS barrel connector. I was looking around on the net yesterday for pricing on those and bang for the buck i think the WL50 is worth the little extra money. You get a charging base, it can be powered by AA batteries or 9v, you will be far far less likely to lose any bits of it, and it is super compact. I think it like 20$ more ? Worth it. If you did have issues with interference this one lets you jack in direct a guitar cable and you are back in business . This may be worth me doing a little video on, as that WL50 really is a very cool product….

      Wow - both options look simple - thanks Alec!!! So for wireless, from the guitar the WL 50 transmitter wirelessly to the receiver which is connected to the GO then the GO connected to the EX by trs aux cable (you show that last connection in the video). So this would work with any amp (with amp EQ flat as possible), correct? The only thing from the original EX I wouldn’t be using would be its wireless capability from its transmitter, but at least I can utilize the practice amp for external listening. A video on this subject would be great as this indeed harnesses the “bridge” as you described so the GO gives the Katana world of patches, not just the EX limited catalog. Thanks again for your help with the Katana communities you contribute to!

      @@tarkusmike yes and no. What I’ve showed in there is one wireless WL20 ( that’s what the transmitter dongle is for everything, Kat airs, WAZA air, etc the WL50 IS THE RECEIVER, that also comes with its own WL20. Now to broadcast, ie, send out the guitar over the air, both the WL50 receiver and the AirEx’s built in receiver are getting your guitar sound at the same time . It’s like you tuning two radios to the same station. So you now have the kat air ex chain, running in parallel with the katana go. This means one could be running acoustic, one could be running crunch sounds, the aux in mixes the two chains back together before it hits the EX’s speaker, Your alternative here, which is also cool. Grab any other speaker with an aux in, could be a jbl Bluetooth, and now you have 1 guitar to 2 different speakers. No fussing with phasing or the usual ground hum of a dual amp rig, because it’s all over wireless.

      In this case the architect V4 was only to the katana Go. I got this as the Waza air still doesn't have any update to give the Centa OD. It's a good unit that one. Highly recommended if Matthews have now officially launched it. Mine was number ,13 off the original batch which had some cosmetic errors.

      @@AlecBourneMidiMadScientist I have the same issue - I am trying to get my Airstep to connect to my WIDI Master, and it simply won't connect. Part of the problem is they are supposed to auto-connect, so there is no way of 'pairing' them as such, either within the XSonic Airstep app or the WIDI app; there are no options within either of those to pair devices... I know the WIDI is working as I can send test MIDI messages via BT from my iPhone. And I know the Airstep is working with the device I want to control (Quad Cortex) as it works perfectly when I connect the Airstep and QC with a 5 pin MIDI cable. So the problem is the connection (or lack of it) between the Airstep and the WIDI Master....

      @@theRodofwar Glad it's not just me 😅 (although that doesn't really help you!) I have got it to work using the MIDIMITTR app. The app works as a bridge, and it's the only place I've found where I can tell the Airstep and WIDI Master to talk to each other. So that's great. The problem is though you have to have the app open (or running in the background) to keep the connection alive. So it's a workaround and does the job. I'm still not content though, as the Airsrep is supposed to be able to speak to the WIDI Master without any app to link them, so I'll keep trying...💪🏻

    hey mate, do you know how to use a morningstar/midi controller to move up/change to presets on different banks on the Pod Go?

    • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist
      @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist 6 місяців тому

      The new MC6 pro I believe will help you out. The issue with the podgo is it needs to have usb midi incoming to control it which means the midi controller will need to have UHOST capabilities to directly connect . Any other controller would work but you would need to arrange connectity through a phone or tablet with an app to do the job of usb host

    Hi Alec. What is the app you're using there please? I have just bought a Katana Air EX, and an Airstep+Lite combo. While I wait for pending firmware updates, I'd just like to get anything working together in the meantime via an iPad or whatever if possible Update: Switched my brain on and found the K-Air Midi app. The app looks very good. I can't persuade it pick up a learned code from the Airstep but I'll persevere

    • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist
      @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist 7 місяців тому

      For k-Air midi controls you will want to add presets with regular old simple cc messages, you can do either a basic cc to toggle or use specific values of 0 and not 0 to force a decided on or off toggle, for the volumes you send a cc and value and adjust the slide levels between 0 and 127 like any normal midi cc .

  • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist

    An update. At the end I had talked a bit about the airsteps, the firmware updates they will need to do are probably gonna slip to 1st quarter of 2024, no longer end of 2023. Let’s hope they do get on top of that, as the EX bumped up with airsteps is a thing to behold if it is running sysex and totally following the midi data sent back out from the Kat Air EX. I can’t really emphasize how rare it is to have this dual way communication with any modeller wirelessly.

      It is quite an interesting experience isn't it... Could make for some really interesting ways to rebuild presets where you split the sound across two different signal chains...I mean with double the 3 colour volumes maybe the whole boost section would get doubled, if you could pan the boost section you could either stack or store multiple versions of the drive pedals.

      That’s the official name of the BOSS transmitter. It’s the exact same one you get with all the airs, or with the WL50 base unit, and you can broadcast your guitar or pedalboards with em. One amp could be pure gain, the other could be all wet effects. Or mix and mash up the presets however you want to. I think it is something worth trying out if you meet up with your mates and you have this gear. If you had a WL50 only you could network in non boss gear like a spark amp too.
