Hi I'm Denise and I'm glad you're here. I'm an English major and history minor student who absolutely loves all things books! As a hobby, I read through history chronologically and my book collection continues to grow. I have collections from ancient to modern literature and I love finding classics in various other formats such as graphic novels, children's editions, middle grade editions, pop-ups, collectors editions, etc. It’s my hope that the sources that I’ve used in my own self-education will prove helpful for you. Pull up a seat and let’s chat.

Mary Beard's _Confronting the Classics_ has some very interesting content that follows on, in a way, to Everitt's _Augustus._ I'm tempted to re-read the last few chapters of it.
@@Richard.HistoryLit Really? I have never seen that title but now, I will definitely be looking for it. Thanks for the recommend.

Golden Compass seems very interesting. 🙂
Hi Denise. 0:12 I had a gut feeling lately, telling me something was missing. Last night I figured what it was, looking over your channel. 😄 1:40 That's a very interesting subject. My initial thought was that American history is taught at greater lenght in America, compared to Europe. But now I am thinking, how do americans teach European history. 😀 2:39 Interesting book indeed. 3:53 That App will serve very useful in a couple of years. For now my personal library isn't that big. Thanks for sharing that! 🙂 12:05 Volume 37? Sounds exiting, I wonder how I haven't come across it, I guess Google isn't showing me the whole picture. Anyhow I found a large series, "Fathers of the Church" by the Catholic University of America Press. It's a huge collection, which I dream of having at some point, to some extent. 16:19 That'll be s nice start for my black history section. Thanks Denise. 24:27 At first I thought that book was a monstrosity, becayse of it's size. But seeing it's a Art book, makes sense. Good on you for purchasing it, the art is lovely. 😀
I think they should have done two seperate books. Volume 1 & 2. But I am sure it’s had great content which is what matters the most.
I really enjoyed the Wolf Hall trilogy. Harry Potter is comforting. Your cat is beautiful. 😊
I’m encouraged by your reading experience with Wolf Hall. Yes, Harry Potter rocks! And, thank you for complimenting my kitty cat. I love your picture with your cat. I wish mine would do that!
Denise, I love how much thought and care you put into your reading life! From prepping your book spines (which, honestly, is next-level dedication) to annotating with such precision, your approach is both meticulous and deeply engaged. Also, your take on The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory really hit-there’s something unsettling about watching people warp faith into something unrecognizable. And Redwall-what a fantastic comfort read! Hope your journey through the medieval and early Renaissance shelves is as rewarding as it sounds. Looking forward to seeing what you pick up next!
@@DrCrankyPantsReads you are incredibly kind. Thank you for your thoughtful and kind words. I’ll be checking out your channel and subscribing.
I'm glad you found the tag! Really interesting answers to both. And I think we have some similar reading habits funnily enough. Which is nice! I have subscribed. Particularly things like one book or several, and stopping after a chapter... I did that last night and went back to the new film _Django._ (for 10 minutes). You highlight the whole issue of plot, and "don't tell me the ending!" I am constantly amazed with introductions to classics. In short I don't even look at them at all nowadays. To be fair there is the issue of drawing our attention away from the storyline towards meaningful points and deeper things if present, but that sells the reader a little short in our reading skills and abilities, imo at least. Giving the plot away in a movie however!!! Verboten! quite possibly scene from _fish called wanda_ time, out the window... with warm regards,
Hello Richard. I remember while watching your videos thinking that that here was a person who knew how to take care of his books. Your 10 minute escape into Django made me laugh. I quite agree with you about introductions. I quickly learned to avoid them at the beginning and save them for after I finished the book. And that rude person who gave away the plot, he and I are no longer together! Thank you for your kind words. I look forward to more of your videos. 😊
@@daubiebooks63 It's a pleasure. Meanwhile I would like to invite you to check out my two recent and original tags. Shelf Respect and Janstory, such as they are...
Good spine prepping tip! Thanks
17:08 Cool tip. As I didn't do this on my first couple of books, and their spine are... ah, how to put it, not matching their age? 😄
😆
Hello, I just found your channel thanks to Kevin. I've got the John Adams book on my TBR for later this year... probably September and October. I'm reading all the McCullough books in the order they were published. Right now I'm reading about the building of the Panama Canal. 🚢
@@BookLadyLinda oh wow, that’s fantastic! Which is the first of the McCullough books, by the way.
@daubiebooks63 The first is The Johnstown Flood.
Interesting idea, reading everything and in order. I have done that with a couple of authors, of novels, but not non-fiction/history. The exceptions are John Sugden but he has only written three books. And Maya Jasanoff. I went back to her debut book which I really liked, having already read the more prominent _Liberty's Exiles._
@ are those authors historians?
@@BookLadyLinda I haven’t that one. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
I own the same John Adams book by McCullough!
Have you read it yet?
@@daubiebooks63 I have read half of it.
@daubiebooks63 nope. It was on my original Jan 2025 tbr, but I did not begin.
@@Richard.HistoryLit how is it so far?
@@daubiebooks63 After a slightly unexpected beginning (for non-fiction), it very quickly became a thoroughly readable and enlightening read. There is plenty of good stuff with respect to Adams and his wife Abigail, including letters back and forth when they are apart. I'm not convinced we get the whole (and direct) story behind Adams thinking about possible independence but we do certainly get plenty of possible leading evidence. We do get a definite sense of the age in which he was living and what that means, for example, for his education, but there is a sense of time and place and how ordered society was or not as the case may be. I could do not less than recommend you give it a go. with warm regards,
Hey Denise. Thanks for doing my tag! Its nice to meet you and your channel. I have truly met so many book lovers and BookTubers. I am now a new subscriber! Enjoyed your picks, some all the books i have never heard of but sound very intriguing! I believe Wolf Hall is one i have heard of, and Yes Harry Potter! Jim Dale does an amazing narration of Harry Potter! I have heard of Redwall but haven’t read any yet. I hope you have a great week, and again, nice to meet you!
Hi Kevin. Thanks for dropping in. Looking forward to more from your channel. 😊
12:57 True, negativity/stress is like poison, if someone drinks from that cup, we shouldn't join into drinking it too regardless if we think are right. I read somewhere in my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy that us humans perceive more the body language than what's actually being said. For example if someone speaks in anger, envy, etc... The solution that I found, even though I only attained a small fraction of it and for a short time, is to practice self-detachment and mortification of the senses. That leads us in time in being unaffected by the situations we may face. Again although I speak of it, I haven't managed to keep it for long. I hope to get at it again someday. Congratulations on completing your Harry Potter House Edition, Ravenclaw series. Thanks for sharing with us your book picks. I added some to my wishlist. 🙂
Thanks Paul. I’ve practiced meditation on and off over the years and I think it’s time for me to get back to it. I always feel better when I do.
@daubiebooks63 You're welcome. Same here, I used to use Divine Intimacy by Baronius Press, quite good topics, it's a Catholic Carmelite book, it runs along the old liturgical year, but I try to run it according to the current one. I also have another one, that's on my wishlist, I saw some pictures of what the reflections are like and I quite like what I see. (Like the one above, it seems to focus on virtue, detachments, etc...) It's titled Practical Meditations by Angelus Press. (Note: I seems the reflections on this one are shorter, the book itself is also smaller)
San Diego county ; 🔥 6 simce 1/22.😮
Has California always experienced fires like these in the past?
@@Paul9443 the repeated fires have only become a problem over the last 20 years. I grew up here and it was never this bad.
@daubiebooks63 That's terrible to hear. Here in Europe, I remember quite vividly hoping for some good heat during summer pre-2009/10. But since then, winters have gotten warmer, and summers grew almost unbearable.
@ I have heard about the increasingly hot summers in parts of Europe. When I was there in April, I remember the staff at some of the hotels mentioning that they had to install air conditioners. This was something that they never had to do before.
love the video . i think you would be amazing at asmr you should definitely try it ❤️
Thank you for your encouragement but I would still prefer to watch ASMR rather than to produce it.
You've got quite a collection of bookmarks. 😄 I too sometimes make paper bookmarks because of the same issue you've mentioned, especially on really thin paper books. Also, 3:41 have you managed to make any? I imagine the trouble would be buying the sort of colours that don't bleed through, or maybe a finish spray, so that the colours don't end up on the book pages. I sometimes contemplate decorating ( illuminated style), pages on some of my books. Unfortunately, they have too thin pages for me to do that. But it'd be cool. 🙂
Hey Paul. As far as bookmarks go, I’m thinking king of opaque white with some sort of design over it. I still haven’t sat down to work on it though.
Just recently came across your UA-cam channel. Love your content and the easygoing laid back way you present it, instant subscriber. Fellow book lover here who shares similar bucket list goals. Hope to visit as many major, and not so major, antiquarian used bookshops as I can across the country Strand, Brattle, etc. I dream of what it would have been like to shop all the bookshops of yesteryear like those on Book Row, the old world shops in London, the bookstalls in France, and others the world over. Remember, its not hoarding if its books! Lol

Terrible what's happened there in California. I hope you are well and that you have been spared the four days power cut your neighboring town had to endure. So many interesting book picks. I added many to my own wishlist for future reads. Thank you for sharing them with us. 7:45 Me too! 😄 I am really interested in your thoughts on the Ignatius Critical Editions book. 9:15 That is beautiful indeed.

Hi Denise, I don’t usually read books like you reviewed, but your discussion was very interesting. I haven’t heard Plato and the great philosophers discussed since college. i’m not sure what I believe about near death experiences, but there are many so there must be some truth to them. Aloha friend.
My conclusion about NDE’s is similar to yours. I figure there must be something to them and now that I’ve read about NDE’s going much farther back in history, they seem as everyday as dreams.
Wow sounds like you have a beautiful family and had a wonderful holiday. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting library haul! Happy reading!
10:17 this reminds me of the dutch Sinterklaus. Which happens to be a spanish Roman-Catholic biship, riding on a white horse, and sailing to the Netherlands in a steamboat ship. 😄
you should try asmr pleaseeee
Thank you for that.
Has the book explanatory notes which explains content in an uncomicated way Also how much to buy?
Yes, as a study Bible it has explanations, cross references, some historical references and language explanations. My purchase, as I recall, was around $70 or so, including shipping and tax. I hope this helps.
