How Pokemon's Art Style & Design Has 'Evolved'
Pokémon's art style has changed a lot over the years, and I wanted to share my thoughts as a professional concept artist as to how you can read and understand Pokemon designs as well as appreciating how cute they are.
From Pokemon Red, all the way to Pokemon Legends Arceus, Game Freak has gained progressively more art capabilities and a larger team, that will have some large effects on how new Pokémon will be designed. But I'm hoping the video teaches you how Game Freak tackles creature design, and how you might be able to design your own Pokémon too.
I know some folks might not appreciate my love of both new and older Pokémon, but each have their charms. I hope we can all just appreciate cute creatures together :)

Why Metroid Dread's Varia Suit Looks Awesome
Переглядів 123 тис.3 роки тому
Cheers for watching my channel everyone! I've loved this series for a long time and this Varia Suit looks like possibly the best design Metroid has ever had. I really hope you folk enjoyed this deep dive into some of the more obvious and extremely subtle design techniques used on the Varia Suit in particular. I would've written some of the Power, Gravity and [REDACTED] suits, but this was proba...
Pokemon designs went downhill after gen 4.
Wish they sold a figma of the varia instead of the power suit
Very nice and calming. Keep it up!
I really did not like the varia or gravity suit at the start. I still don't like how pointy the chest is where it goes to the shoulders. It looks like it'd impede arm movement across the chest, specifically when she holds her arm cannon which she's always done. I do love them overall now and I can't wait to see how it evolves in Metroid 6 after it finishes "growing back" after some time.
I love your art! Your tips are also amazing! Tysm
12:52 A regular weighting diagram? *puts brown fedora on it* PERRY THE WEIGHTING DIAGRAM?!?!?!
Sometimes simple is better
This is so funny, gen4 is my absolute favourite of all of them!
hey i love gen 4 says the guy whos plaing gen 4 music in the background
can you talk about the characters next
However, it is better if the Ken Sugimori art style is kept, so people will recognize the series as Pokémon. It worked when the Mario, Kirby, and Metroid games kept their own, and people recognize them too. SNK do change art styles, but only for the character arts as the character models would stay the same in especially the Neo Geo era KoF games.
Honestly kinda expected you to talk about how much the midern era gave their deisgns so much cultural research. The last three generations specifically it feels like they make pokemon not only to be appealing, but also to be able to properly represent the regions they are based on. It honestly makes it have some charm and care to it that I don't think peole appreciate enough.
The pokemon they make are not appealing at all.
@painpapadopoulos8120 I like it personally
❤
I personally like more animalistic pokemon, more sharp and wild, like you compared persian and delcatty.
Really great video but the audio loop wasnt really enjoyable. Metroid has so much good music kind of missed potential to upper the quality you already bring to the video but still great to watch
The Dread Varia suit is not only my favorite suit in Metroid, but in gaming as a whole. It's such a sick and badass look, and you nailed everything perfectly.
I always find it funny that people harken back to the nintendo power artwork. That image was an unofficial illustration in an American magazine that no one actually involved with the game approved or knew of at the time, and the height and weight (over 6 feet, over 200 pounds) were never official. The Other M build is a stark contrast, but as far as I can tell were always the case.
Were silicoon and cascoon in web strings vs having spikes?
Im still disapointed they didnt bring back the designs from Fusion properly perosnally
Cool fact: varia is actually a mistranslation of the Japanese word for barrier, but sounded so cool and sci-fi so it was kept in the series ever since.
I just liked it because Dread is the first game in the series to have actual lighting, meaning I can finally play as golden Samus
i feel like the open world pokemon games from now on might have a new art style to convey that there living creatures in a open world and there might be new design philosophies due to that
yh your really just reminded me how peak gen 7's designs were. IMO best pokemon designs in the new era (second to megas but overall gen 7>gen 6). Gen 7 was on par with the heavy hitter of the middle era like gen 3 and gen 4 in terms of designs
Thing is Pokémon should look different from animal, basically should kinda represent them not look like Cartoons of them. For instance kycanroc is too much like a dig not a Pokemon
Thank you. I've always said that about generation 4.
Great video man
I still love the first 3 gens, specially Hoenn, but I really love the Pokemon designs from the current era (gen 6 to now) I dont care what people say, I grew up since it beginnings in Gen 1, so its not like I grew up gen 6 to be bias with my opinion. Both Gen 4 and 5 were the point that I almost fell of from Pokemon, I did bought the games, but hardly played them, gen 6 brought me back and while I still didn’t exactly love the game I felt it more fresh than the pseudo-reboot of Gen 5, but gen 7 is the one I really enjoyed Pokemon again and both Gen 8 and 9 continued with trend. The other day I was doing the list of favorite Pokemon from each type and most are from gen 6 onwards, and for example even though I love Gardevoir design I still prefer the Mega-Gardevoir design
Probably the best video I’ve found on Pokémon designs, thanks for the vid <3
I like to think that Samus could've rebuilt herpower suit to be as bulky and protective as it used to be, since in fusion it was light due to removed parts from her surgery, but after the end of fusion she grew fond of the newfound agility, leading to her redesigning it for Dread but keeping it light.
oh yeah, about the visor, it feels really fierce because it contours similarly to the ogee curve created by a strong jaw, cheekbone
honestly, I prefer the normal power suit of Dread, simply because I prefer colors on the cooler end of the color spectrum. also the blue, used in tandem with the red of the chestplate and helmet, gives a more appealing balance between warm and cold colors in my opinion
I remember one friend of mine once said "the painted Azumarill artwork looks more threatening than Yveltal, who is literally death incarnated". I think the main issue of older fans not liking the latest artstyle is that they have too many colors that are too bright, there is a general lack of neurtal colors that make them look "natural". Since Pokémon should be actual animals of their world, older fans expect they to be... I don't say "realistic"... but at least natural. The "plushie" era makes them feel like thay are artificial. I say this because the main yell of older fans is something like "there's no way something like THIS exist in nature, even if it is a fantasy". I personally like most of gen 6 and 7 Pokémons (8 and 9 are hard to elaborate for me, sorry) and I like the new style, but I hugely prefer the older style, and if you compare pokemon that should have the same role (Swampert and Quaquaval, both water starters), the change in artstyle is too big, and I understand those who say "the desing by itself is ok, but the artstyle is too eccentric in latest generations", and I personally agree. Great video ❤
Love this video and the points made! Taking a critical eye and explaining what we all perceive intrisically is truly fascinating. I love the more athletic look of Samus in this game, and your points illustrate why the revisions made for Dread suit her character so well in this game.
This is the most unique video ive seen on Pokemon.
Imagine "Who's that Pokemon" without distintive silhouettes
So they made Pokemon look like plushies for money? No way
Bro just casually dropped a banger and dissapeared
I wish this guy still made videos. I only just found him 2 years later
I'm planning on making more :) if I can find the time and an editor. And thank you for the lovely words 💛
@@SamSantalaArt no, man. Thank you for the incredible videos! I wish you the best, and I can't wait to see the new uploads when they release.
snes varia suit is unmatched how dare you
Good call in the conclusion. Paradox Pokemon are clearly Gen 9's answer to how to create an appealing twist to designs without radically shifting the core principles. They'll likely continue to introduce gimmicks like this in each generation (Mega, Dynamax, Paradox, etc.) to push the design language and gameplay features without having to make any permanent changes to the core formula.
no. this is wrong and will kill pokemon in the long run. Without the video games there's no merch. Nintendo is just Japanese Disney at this point and it's going to end up horribly for both companies. I don't think any of us are complaining about Pokemon or Disney because we're not being catered to as much as we are starting to realize the implications it has now.
Varia suit OK but what About Gravity suit
Awesome vid
Great video
new designs sucks. so simplified. doenst look like natural animals
bro you know nothing about designing
@@luukienquoc1251 bro fuck off. the whole community knows what im talking about.
The best video I’ve seen in a while about Pokemon.
I don't like the halfway off canon suit design. That is simply not what Samus would look like after the events of Fusion. Her new look is way more organic, as seen in Fusion and Metroid Prime when you unlock the Fusion Suit. The idea to go halfway back to classic Super Metroid Suit design is heavily flawed.
