No one can tell you what a total knee replacement is like, you have to experience it yourself. My problem is the inadequate pain management of early discharged patients. You should stay at least two days for pain management. Oxycodone by mouth doesn’t compare to IV narcotics. This is the third most painful surgery out there, don’t sugar coat it. It’s a long painful recovery, but it beats sitting on the couch the rest of your life.

Starting to feel a tad better, I am retired. I still am sleep deprived…my knee bends and extends well, stairs going down bother me a bit. I have physio twice a week. It has been way too cold to swim lately and the weather has not been kind to my poor knee.

It sounds like life will be bad, but a friend of mine had both knees shattered in car accident, he went no surgery, physical therapy and he's still having pain. Either way it's tough. I know people who had good experiences and those who haven't. I dreed this day, but if im going be recouping w/o surgery with no end in site, im choosing surgery

I am now 10 weeks post TKR and 3 weeks post MUA. I still have knee pain and limited range (comfort zone is 80 degrees and I can get to 105 under great duress). I have had 30 PT trips and work out on my own about 2-3 hours daily. I still cannot walk without a limp or sleep in a bed, or sit comfortably for meals. I have the sensation that the implant is too big for me. What are my options?

If you’re regretting the surgery it didn’t hurt enough before. It’s a total grind to do all the PT, exercise, stretching but not feeling that bone on bone grind and walking pain free is already a win.

One more thing , I was told it’s a 3 month recovery but that’s a lie, one month in and I don’t believe in 2 more months I’ll be 100 % , making progress bending and walking on new knee with more power little by little but far removed from feeling 100 , maybe a year it’s more likely

Not a Knee replacement - I had a Quad Tendon Rupture Feb-2022. I have had four surgeries - all of which have failed to at least some extent, and a major arthro cleanout due to a Staph infection. I am well over 70. The first two surgeries failed completely. The last one with a Graft and anchors has a small tear but appears to be holding. They held me from PT for two months to allow some healing on that last one. The staph infection required 13 4 liter bags of cleanout fluid to clear and 6 weeks of IV antibiotic infusions so I am WAY behind in my recovery. I have been told that I might not achieve 90 degree Flexion but I am close to 100 and might get to 110 this coming month. Funny that I never really had any pain (Always had a high pain tolerance) and never needed the Narcotic Pain relievers but take Ibuprofen as an anti- inflammatory. My swelling is now finally starting to diminish after more than a year and I can drive a car but not my tractor. I am finally able to actually walk reasonably well although there is some discomfort from the swelling still. I still take steps one at a time though. They have deliberately been careful with my PT due to the tear since the DR says there is no possibility of another operation. Progress therefore has been slow but I have progressed more than they thought I would. I am back to regular workouts in addition to my PT but miss squating - can only us a Leg Press so far.

2 weeks out from TKR and still have some pain from the results of the tourniquet they used. I suggest anyone getting a TKR get a Cold Therapy Machine and 2 battery operated compression sleeves for both legs. I also use a heating pad after using the cold therapy machine. Having a recliner that reclines almost level is also needed if you want to get a good nights sleep. A pill box also is something I suggest for the different medications and different times you take the different medications works better than reading the pill bottles every time they need to take them. Keep the Faith and you will survive and be back on track.

Hello Doc, this is my knee impression, waiting for Ortho Appointment, extremely painful. Will like to know if a knee replacement is needed please h. Extensive degenerative tearing of the medial meniscus with horizontal oblique component of the body and posterior horn, and extensive tearing of the body which decompresses peripherally into a large area of parameniscal cysts measuring up to 3.7 cm in total extent. 2. Free edge fraying of the lateral meniscus body and degeneration at the anterior root. 3. Relatively mild tricompartmental chondrosis. Had my right knee replaced this past July. Was walking unsupported day three after surgery. Doc prescribed Oxycodone and while it worked fairly well for pain- that shit made me paranoid. Asked doc to gimme something else and he gave me some heavy duty Norco. Yea the exercises are important to prevent scar tissue but I believe nothing is better for yr new knee than actually USING it. Of course, yr mileage may vary. Having my other replaced at the end of this month👍🏻

I wonder if he’d be saying all that if he actually had a total knee replacement…. He makes it sound sooooo easy! Everyday is a challenge, I don’t think anyone wants not to succeed. The realism is that everyone is different and you do what your body allows at that time… it’s work in progress…..

It is foolish to make people think everything is always honkey dorey for everyone...I am 61...10 weeks post op with 2nd tkr...and I flex at 117...its stiff and it swells everyday...I don't squat or kneel.... And yet I am so happy to be pain free...and I drive and I walk....what more can you ask for????

I think this is in general advice. I am 2 months into my second TKR and have found compared to my first that this time is much easier. I'm at 110 flexion after 5 weeks, still some swelling and pain. Short walks with no aides. But you just got to keep going every day keep at it work through the pain ice and cryocuff help a lot. Anti inflamatories. Each person will have different response and progress. Do the best you can. Good luck to all of you.

Thank you for the information. I am at 3 months. My doctor has released me from physical therapy, only home pt, and I will see him again at the 6 month mark. I am 67, in great health & doing my exercises every day religiously. I do still have some swelling. I seem to be stuck at 110 degrees. That’s unacceptable to me. Is there a point where I will just be unable to get any more flexion than that? Or is there hope for more bend…it’s very frustrating to me. I am retired, but back to doing all of my normal every day activities, just stuck at 110

  • @StanCuff

I'm 6 weeks Post Op. At 3 weeks I had 70 degrees flexion from subacute rehabilitation. Checked out and went to my Physical Therapist. He freaked out and said I should be much further along saying I was heading towards a manipulation (MUA). He scared me so I intensified my exercises. Was in the gym daily, home exercises, and PT thrice weekly. Now after six week my Flexion today was 130 degrees and zero degree straight. So now I'm working on knee and quad strengthening. Yes it was excruciating painful but I committed to the goals. Now mostly achieved. It can be done but ya just gotta work harder and fight through the pain.

Well, well well you are the success story that I would like to be. Not sure how you work through the pain anymore than I have. I’ve been in physical therapy since the day after surgery three weeks in my house and four weeks at the PT center so here I am at seven weeks and only at 80° was 55° the day after surgery I have the MUA scheduled for the end of the month and yes, it is scary but I see no other way. I’ve been working so hard every day if I push any harder, it feels like something is going to snap. Maybe I have a low pain tolerance but the painkillers don’t work for me and I can only do so much. Hopefully I will have good news to report soon.

I’m 58 years old and had my left knee replaced 1 month ago. The pain has been bad and the lack of sleep quite depressing. However the range of motion has improved dramatically and bit by bit the pain is lessening. I guess you just have to stick with it and grit your teeth
