You can use Dogmeat. Tell him to get the item. When he picks it up, quicksave. load the save and it will be in his trade inventory.

If youre having the same problem as me, which is where when you release b it closes the menu, simply hit a to store before releasing b to scrap!

I've been using this probably since 2015. The biggest downside is that you can't use the Lone Wanderer perk, but it's how I got through a few survivor play-throughs.

Also wear lighter armor. That's where ballistic weave comes in. You can get stronger armor but it weighs more. Mechanist suit with ballistic 5 is pretty high and very low weight.
