First 10 Minutes with X1L3 Shard: A Noise Machine Unleashed
Переглядів 50414 днів тому
This year, I decided to treat myself to a module that’s not strictly necessary for developing my main live performance system but is instead a total war machine for creating walls of noise-purely for fun. Here’s the X1L3 Shard, born from what I believe is one of the most interesting producers on the scene right now, constantly pushing the limits of how much destruction can be packed into a sing...
Everything Worked Out: The Performance I Dreamed Of
Переглядів 24121 день тому
Despite the issues I had with my sequencer, this last performance went incredibly well. I finally managed to realize an idea I had five years ago about the kind of rhythms I want to create, the energy I want to bring to the stage, and how I want to make people have fun. At 140 BPM, with broken rhythms and a powerful mix, everything worked perfectly. The crowd under the stage was amazing-it was ...
My best live patch sound to date
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
Here I am with another video, featuring a demo of how the patch sounds with the system in its most compact form-using only the main case. I've been having great success optimizing the patch to work well with Metron, and in this particular example, I'm extremely happy with the compression, saturation, and overall mix. The instruments blend together nicely, and I love how the kick and bass work a...
Building sequences from scratch with Metron is FAST
Переглядів 345Місяць тому
In this video, I wanted to show you a typical workflow I've been using lately with my new sequencer to build loops for live performances. It’s incredibly easy to start from scratch and create a complete and complex loop thanks to the various interaction modes this fantastic module offers. For example, you can see how I create small patterns that repeat every 6 steps, and then duplicate this mic...
Ambient Sound Design with Dark Matter: feedback demo
Переглядів 5862 місяці тому
In this video, I’ll be demonstrating how to use the EQ channels and volume faders on the Dark Matter, which I’ve placed in a feedback loop to bring out even more character in the sound. This setup gives the module a unique character and expressivity potential, especially when volumes are kept low, generating the rich textures you’ll hear. Unlike the previous video, where I focused on kick and b...
Doing more with less (and metron scenes demo)
Переглядів 1412 місяці тому
In this video, I’m sharing the streamlined version of my modular setup, condensed into just my Intellijel case. I wanted to experiment with a minimalist version of my system for an upcoming live show, challenging myself to reduce gear and setup time while keeping around 80% of my sound intact with 104HP less in modules. Despite the new sequencer taking up nearly a quarter of my system, it makes...
Blending Kick & Bass with Dark Matter: My go-to technique
Переглядів 2702 місяці тому
In this video, I’ll share the winning strategy I’ve found for blending kicks and bass in my patches using the Dark Matter module by Bastl Instruments. I’m particularly impressed by how well the two inputs blend and stick together, especially when adding a touch of the module’s distortion. The Dark Matter offers impressive mixing capabilities, thanks to its small switches that allow you to modif...
First Patch: WMD Metron + Voltera
Переглядів 4422 місяці тому
After my recent concert, I realized that I really need to improve the quality of my sequencing overall. This led me to discover the WMD Metron, a powerful sequencer with an intuitive interface that caught my attention right away. It comes with 16 outputs, and I added an expansion module to sequence control voltages as well. This allows me to modulate the frequency of my main voice, for example,...

Saturday, October 5th, 2024, was an incredible day. I had the pleasure of participating in a new edition of Synth-o-Matic at the Ex Centrale in Bologna. For the occasion, I put together a patch that leaned more atmospheric than usual, focusing on syncopated rhythms with a smarter, more intricate sound. Challenges and Lessons Learned As always, live performances come with their set of challenges...

Enhancing the Live Patch: Modulations, Sidechain, and Percussion Adjustments (Part 3)
Переглядів 5446 місяців тому
In this third video, I continue to make small improvements to the patch, adding some modulations. Additionally, I've increased the BPM by 10, bringing it to 145 BPM, as I know I'll have very limited time to perform. I've also added the kraken snare. Although, as I mentioned in previous videos, I'm not entirely happy with the control it offers, as I struggle to find satisfying sounds, by keeping...
Refining the Live Patch: Percussion Improvements, Lead Additions, and Feedback Drones (Part 2)
Переглядів 9176 місяців тому
In this video, the patch-building process continues. I've added a few new cables and focused on refining some patterns. I found a good moment early in the video where the glitch effects, particularly using the drone as a background, were very pleasing. So, I dedicated some time to exploring those sounds. Additionally, I attempted to recreate a feedback effect that I used in my last live perform...
Creating a Live-Ready Modular Patch from Scratch (part 1)

This Saturday, I've been invited to perform in Milan. Over the next few days, I'll be building the patch that I'll take to the stage, and I want to share this process with you. Starting from scratch, I'll document my thought process in creating a complex patch. In this particular example, I'll build a patch capable of working without a computer, using only the modules I have available. The goal...

very interesting exploration! did you use the dark matter in this patch?
yes! immediately after the shard I processed it with the dark matter to keep the bass/highs in check!
Great sound, im picturing some down tempo heavy beats with that patch !
There's so much potential with this thing. Slowly starting to understand it
Are you still using wmd crater as the kick drum?
Never had crater actually. I got kraken and fracture. Using ultra kick by ssf now and BIA in the past. Cheers
OMG you monster, risking Zadar, and the rest of your modules, like that. I take my other comment back. Please don’t buy underwurlde. Spare its life for someone more deserving.
I promise Zadar is still alive and well. I’m usually extra careful-I guess I got carried away in the moment!
I hope you also bought Underwurlde! So good.
There's definitely interest!
Had I performed that set I would be intensely proud. 🔥
Yeah it was great!
Thanks for running musical content through it, much appreciated.
Incredible! Would have been great to hear and see it live
Sick 🥵 would love to see it live
My live performance using this patch: ua-cam.com/video/8FU1Pg-0AH0/v-deo.html
(full story in description) It’s truly wonderful to close the year with such a satisfying and refined performance. This won’t be my last video of the year, but I wanted to take this chance to thank all of you for following me, watching my videos, and for every comment and like you’ve shared. Your support makes a huge difference and motivates me to keep recording and sharing these experiences with you. A heartfelt thank you to all of you!

Awesome
Amazing
🔥
sub component is the compressed tail of ultra kick. bass is BIA>Belgrad(doing most of the sculpting)>Dark Matter>Waver(with fback) All mixed in vortices. Then Ikarie>FXaid>Hipass>Autodyne
thanks for the path
that is a really good patch indeed!
If that doesn't fit Cyberpunk, then I don't know either. Awesome.
man, this is sick!
I'm rewatching this video and I noticed that there is noticeably less sub bass than I heard when I recorded it. I should have fixed that in future videos, sorry!
Sounding really good man. Big and pounding. Not too muddy. Curious what issues you are having with the Metron? I had issues on the most current firmware with the assign in recording, tried to downgrade to a previous version with no success. It just seemed to hang at the startup flash. At no point would I consider not using Metron as a result. Thanks for contacting the company, I would love to see another update with a few fixes. Kinda gave up hope. My favorite modulation is Noise Engineering Mimetic Digitalis into a Lapsus Os for attenuation. Clock it with a Clep Diaz to set the number of steps (via a reset function that can be indexed to a certain number of steps in a bar). Then use a basic clock divider to clock the Clep Diaz so it can be slowed down. It's instant, restrictable to less than full range, and savable (if you are into that). I use one channel as a Master Filter Modulation, distributed to a bunch of filters in the system, and another to modulate the decay on a bunch of things. It's great to be able to reach for modulation on those two things, regardless to what I'm using to make the sound, and it's a cool macro control to change more than one thing at the same time if there is a lot going on. It's a few modules though. Also like Acid Rain Maestro into a 4ms Shifting Inverting Signal Mingler, and Xaoc Zadar into a TipTop Miso. I find I need an inverter and an offset on most of my VCA modulation, so I just pre setup that way.
Reach out to WMD, they are super responsive. Have two Metrons and was having an issue with one. They helped figure it out right away. Hope your situation gets straightend out soon!
impressive!
Great sound, please post the live performance if you can. Sorry to hear about the glitches and bugs hope you help WMD come out with new fireware update... i have dealt with William a few times now and he is a great guy to deal with
Great video, my metron just arrived with a couple of volteras ... will be watching this video a few times
Sweet! 👍
Hot, right off the bat!!!
Man, sure beats (pun intended) old school xox programming...in spite of being xox. Variable length per track, random, variations, integrated trigger mutes, voltera record, ridiculous track length. Make that Metron work!! Great sound selection as well. Thanks Polyterative. La tua batteria e la regina. Full disclosure...I speak no Italian. :)
Very much appreciated! Grazie! :)
freqs in motion🙂
Sounds great
Nice feedback control... Sounds great!!
Gritty! Love it
Wonderful, thanks ! It was well worth the wait :) the real deal, right there. Feedback for days. Just out of sheer curiosity, could you give us a bit more details about this patch, plz ? (e. g. >> which module is generating the drone ? What's placed before, inside and after the feedback loop ? Apart from the Dark Matter, are all the other modules involved stereo ? Some Mid/Side treatment, perhaps ? Or is it just the "magic" of the FXaid post-fb loop ? Because it sounds really wide and full to me ♥)
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Here’s a breakdown of the patch: The drone was originally generated by the Ultra Kick module from SSF (Steady State Fate). By extending the decay, it can sustain indefinitely, creating a continuous tone that serves as the base. The feedback loop involves modules like Vortices and Dark Matter. The final output is tapped and routed back into the system. Vortices helps by cutting extreme high frequencies, keeping the feedback under control, while Dark Matter also contributes to managing and shaping the loop since it’s designed for these tasks. In the stereo chain, I used two Autodyne compressors (left/right, one for each channel) from SSF. Before the compressors, there’s an FX Aid module that adds reverb, contributing to the spatial depth and stereo width. There’s no specific mid/side processing in this patch; the stereo field is shaped by the FX Aid and the dual compressors. If you're curious about the details of how I build my patches, take a look at the website I created. It lets you view the entire signal flow graph. You can find the link in the description-it's called patcher.xyz, and it's open-source. Let me know if you have more questions!
@@polymodular Got it, thanks for the details ! 👍
Metalloid Percussion sounds dope!
Amazing, sounds a bit like the beginning of half life 1 in the test chamber!
I didn't think about it, that's cool haha
Fantastic! Need to watch this a few times!!
epic stuff, do you have the reverb in post or in the feedback loop?
Both! Using 2 fxaids in this patch
Banging groove! Love the kick fill every eight bars :) I gotta admit your setup was sexier without the Metron, but for playing live I'm sure it's a good thing.
It's kind of a big boy but I'm starting to accept it's new king status more and more everyday 😁
Well, thanks for that - sounds really good ! Can't wait for your next "more ambient/drone-scape" oriented video on the Dark Matter ♥ that's why I got this module in the first place (mostly because of your noisiest patches, tbh). Paired with other "feedback-friends" (e. g. the Landscape Stereo Field) it's a treat ;)
I have a dark matter in my drum rack and i've never used it like that, will have to give it a shot. Love that module overall though, great happy accident machine.
Killer video....now i have to go back through your channel looking at dark matter videos on patching, love it! Thanks !!!
Congratulations. Metron is the absolute biz, and in white no less. It sounds odd to say about a drum sequencer, but it really is my favorite sequencer overall. I love Voltera as well. The way they keep it simple(ish) and flexible enough to be both attenuated bipolar modulation and quantized pitch CV is amazing. You can come up with novel mods or pitch sequences in less than a second again and again. And it can all be saved in almost unlimited pattern slots in the Metron. The only thing I found Voltera needs for added live performability is outboard attenuation per channel (I use a WMD 4TTen for each) which allows me to scale as required as well as deactivate/activate modulation with immediacy. I love it so much I ended up with 2xMetron, 2xAxxent, 8xVolteras. I figured all the accessories are useless if you don't have a backup brain (in the case of a failure)...and if you have it, you might as well use it. I kinda use one for drums, and the other for overflow and envelope/slew/complex clock triggering. Maybe a bit overkill, but very powerful. Don't neglect the looping feature in the Fill FX screen, as it kills and also applies to Voltera at the same time. You can even use the clock output as a neat reset for something else. On the same screen, you can setup Mute Groups, as well as the use the Fill function. I hang on this screen most of the time while playing. Also experiment with shortening the length of the Voltera modulation relative to the gate sequences for easy polyrhythm. Look forward to hearing more. The crunchy modulated sound is killer. Would sound good panned around. What was the source/technique? Guessing Manis with an envelope?
I managed to find a silver Metron from a guy in France-got pretty lucky with that one! I really love modules in this color, and it seems you can't get them new in silver anymore. Plus, I managed to save a bit of money, and the module is in good condition, so I feel quite fortunate. Voltera is really interesting. I love the modulation density it adds to my rack, and the quantization options are great. I did encounter a few firmware glitches, but I managed to work around them. I’m still getting used to all the shortcuts, but so far, they’re quite intuitive and powerful. The user experience design on this module is fantastic-it’s truly a joy to interact with. For attenuation, I took a similar approach to yours, using eight attenuators as macros when I perform live. It’s super convenient and adds a lot of expressiveness to my performances. I think I’ve seen some of your videos while doing research-you have an incredible setup! I bet you have a lot of fun with all those Volteras. Initially, I was thinking of selling my Voltage Block and replacing it with another Voltera. But after getting my first Voltera, I'm still weighing whether that’s the right move. I particularly enjoy the Freeze function on the Voltage Block, which allows me to temporarily lock all modulations to the state of a particular step until I release the button-it's a lot of fun for creating fills during my performances. I might be able to replicate a similar effect with the new Metron, though I haven’t quite figured out how to loop only the voltage changes through the FX Fill page without including the gate steps. As for the sound you hear here, you guessed it right-it originates from the Manis Iteritas, layered with three or four levels of distortion. The Dark Matter in Hyperdrive mode adds a unique texture that really glues the kick with my lead voice and bass. I’ll be posting a video soon showcasing this capability in more detail. Plus, there are a few feedback loops that add some extra grit to the sound. Thanks a lot for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment! It means a lot, and I really appreciate your support. Looking forward to seeing more of your work too!
Sound is great, nice to see you back with new modules, some great videos on the WMD sequencer, im sure you made the right choice ... please keep releasing videos, always look forward to them
I really appreciate the support!
Sounds massive as always and by the way you spoke about it in the notes section it's so much better for the types of multiple sequencing you've been wanting to do and that's what matters! I've been looking at WMD's Sequencer for YEARS now but I just can't afford it at moment. I'm glad that you are able to have one as you really need it to play concerts whereas I'm still learning so I can wait😅. BRÁVO 🎉❤
Hell yeah totally agree, this will do wonders! Thanks!!!
