My name is Arnold, a.k.a. Carnold. On my channel you can follow my car projects and watch car reviews. The star of this channel is my 1994 Lexus LS400 and the starlet - literally - is my 1994 Toyota Starlet. Both are project cars which I want to get into the best shape possible. I also do car reviews: Real Life Car Reviews, I focus on the Japanese and Korean brands.
I work in automotive, but mostly on the theoretical side. Every now and then I like to get my hands dirty. So, amateur mechanic it is. The main subject on this channel is my Lexus LS 400, but I also show other stuff that keeps me occupied. Like engine repairs, my job and some occasional non-car related things. And yes, I do have a thing for Peterbilts. If you like to support the channel, you can buy me a coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/arnoldsrepairs?new=1

Lego 7864 Transformer repair
In this video I show you how (not) to open a Lego 7864 Transformer, and what's inside. Mine was broken, the 13 volt AC port wasn't working, but it was an easy fix!

While diagnosing the hesitation under acceleration issue, I took out the upstream O2 sensors and found out one was bad. Problem is: the correct replacement sensor is nowhere to be found. In this video I show you how to test the O2 sensor, which one is a (somewhat) direct replacement and how you install the new sensor. Project Lexus LS400 Episode 35 Fuel system maintenance and Shift solenoids tests
In this video I continue the diagnosis of a stubborn problem: hesitation under acceleration. I look into the fuel pressure regulator and the transmission solednoids. But before I can do that, there is another issue that needs fixing. Slowly but surely we're getting my Lexus LS400 fixed! Nissan Juke Hybrid - Real Life Car Review. Sporty on the outside, comfy on the inside.

The Nissan Juke got a mid-lifecycle update, usually the recipe contains an extrior restyling and some tweaks to the interior tech, but not for the Juke. Nissan left the exterior virtually untouched and completely overhauled the dashboard. The interior is where you spend most of your time driving a car, and that's why Nissan spend their development money on the inside. And it shows! If you want ...
Operation Ariel Saving a 1994 Toyota Starlet EP4
Finally, a new episode of Operation Ariel, my 1994 Toyota Starlet! Not much action in this episode, but a lot of results! In all honesty: I haven't been working much on the Starlet, since it is a daily driver and I can't spend much time on fixing it. Not that it needs a lot of fixing - a 30 year old Toyota is the pinnacle of reliability - but the car has to be up and running every single day. B...

I am aware that the format for Real Life Car Reviews isn't really suitable for a performance car like this, but this car also has great practicle qualities w...

Did you know that Toyota builds a special version of the GR Supra, for track use only? The GR Supra GT4 is that car. Where did u buy the engine?
At www.motorpromo.nl I am not sure if they still sell this engine.
Nice informative review. Thanks.
What is the fuel consumption of this engine per 100km? Thanks
Around 2.5 liters per 100 km at a cruising speed of 50 km/h.
@@Carnold_YT Uf, it's a lot for a 50cc. Happy Holidays!
Best review I have seen excellent 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
Anything about the spare wheels?
Over here, the car comes without a spare wheel. Only a tyre repair kit and a compressor.
@@Carnold_YT Many Thanks.
I have the Lexus NX 2025 gas version and I like it a lot however in the future I'm looking to upgrade to the PHV in the future and rx is the one for me. Thanks for the information on this video. One thing does this car has a spare tire? As NX has run flat tires....
This version comes with a tyre repair kit - it's a weight save thing. I'd prefer to have emergency wheel (a.k.a. donut).
Does it worth the extra money to buy the All wheel drive ?
Only if you live in an area where you have real winters, or when you often drive on unpaved roads. It really depends on your situation.
The transmission is e-Cvt ?
Yes, it uses the Toyota power split device. No belts, no chains, a very smart and utterly reliable system.
very thorough review mate, appreciate it.
Thank you for watching!
This was a trip down memory lane for sure, I remember those! Look at how rough that board is, wow.
Yeah, I expected much better quality, especially because it's made in Germany. Did you have Lego trains too?
I think the AC voltages measure high because they are un-loaded, and my guess is the AC voltage while powering some lights will be normal and not damage the light-bulbs.
I will test it again, with a 10 watt bulb in the circuit. I should have tested it that way, because that is how I tell students to test wires and circuits 😬
+12th!
How I change my fog light!!!!!!! I have the same lexus spec (europe spec)
You have to remove the plate under the bumper and engine, then you can access the rear of the fog light. It's a normal halogen lamp, there is a yellow cover over it that makes the light yellow. It is quite a bit of work.
What you made is beautiful in real life too. Thanks for making Arnold !
You're welcome Joe!
Thank you Arnold for your excellent review of the Crosstrek. We bought one, delivery expected in January 2025. My big worry is that the subaru is too slow for the german roads (after a Volvo XC40 Diesel with 190 HP). But you have dispelled my concerns and show in your review what is really important in a car these days. Smooth riding, safety, reliability. And just like in the Netherlands, more and more roads in Germany are being fitted with speed limits, even on motorways. We are looking forward to our Crosstrek after your great review. Thank You! Thomas
Thanks for your comment Thomas, I hope your new Crosstrek serves you well!
OEM? Toyota. Not Bosch? Do both first. Bad gas 91 octane only no Ethanol
Nippon Denso is the OEM supplier, the original sensors were still on the car 😉
Appreciate your engineering background you give us much more information than the normal auto journalists in every review. Excellent.
Thanks so much!
1991 Lexus ls400 and I have no acceleration. A scenario would be turning left of or right and when pressing on the gas pedal I get no acceleration no matter if pressed to the floor. 3 years in park 😭🫠🤔🫡
I can think of several issues that cause such symptoms. Did you check the capacitors in the ECU? It also can be a fuel pump issue. I have a series of videos on these subjects, maybe they are helpful for you.
@@Carnold_YT thank you, I am checking them out now, I had the ecu checked and repaired by Josh At MotorsportzTX- I am in california- if it’s the fuel pump, I hope it’s available again- for a while it was out of stock. - thank you, thank you
Wiha tools are EXCELLENT ! (I see you got the ESD version too!)
Oh yes, they are great! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this series! Using your tips and advice for my 1996 LS 400.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated!
What are the symptoms of a bad O2 sensor?
High fuel consumption, bad performance, hesitation and stuttering while driving. These are the main symptoms.
so many bull shit
I love this, have a wonderful Christmas!
Thank you! You too Mike!
Merry Christmas ☃️

Beautiful! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!🎅🥳

1st to wish you all a Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much Joe! Same to you!
This video series is extremely useful and appreciated. Fellow LS400 owner for the last 14 years (1991. W/390,000 miles). Thank you from Los Angeles, California USA.
Thank you so much for watching!
What a fantastic video, I’m about to reach the age of 70 and have just bought a 2022 Mash fifty, it’s the first bike I’ve ever owned ( well apart from my two Cube e-bikes). My Mash has only done 2600km and I’m not planning on doing a full strip down but your video was so informative, was glued to screen and enjoyed it so much, thank you so much for posting, I have subscribed and looking forward to watching more. I’ve not ridden my bike yet, waiting till better weather. Just one question, if in the future I decided to upgrade the power output which big-bore kit would you recommend and why? Love the style of my Mash, it suits my age 😂many thanks again : Graham from Peak District UK
Hello Graham, thank you for the kind words! When it comes to big bore kits, I think you are better off with the original setup if you want the engine to last a long time. I have run a big bore kit in combination with the standard 50cc cylinder head. That resulted in a high compression and premature failure of the connecting rod bearing. If you are going to increase the bore, I would also recommend getting a cylinder head with a larger combustion chamber and valves. The only problem is, these cylinder heads aren't produced anymore. That's why I have returned to the original setup. Again, thanks for watching!
Hi I really liked the video, I have just purchased the same 1.8 Excel in silver, I love the car my only gripe is the the CVT gearbox can be a little noisy and Revy up hills Andy.
Hi Andy, thanks for your comment, good luck with your new Toyota!
Thank you for the video. Let me ask, what fluid did you use for the gearbox? Thank you
I used Eurol ATF 1100. By the way, did you see the recent live stream? You won a little prize, can you send me an email on arnold@carnold.nl
I think you have to start the video with the camera horizontal. Also turn off the "Auto-Rotate" function!
It seems the smartphone app doesn't offer a landscape mode for the video Joe ☹️ I had the camera and microphone setup and then the wifi died just before I went live.
47 !!!
That was true last year Joe. It's 48 now 😊
1st!
How do you alone the marks on the side?
Aline*
Which marks do you mean? The ones on the seat mechanism?
These are nice cars, very comfy and easy to live with day to day but two things put me off (other than pricing, which is high for all cars these days). The first is the complexity of that variable compression engine in the E-Power model. I know they had a lot of early issues that are hopefully resolved but still, its a complicated motor. The second is the latest news about Nissan, who's exec's are suggesting they might not last the next 14months unless they get an investor. Crazy times! All that aside, another excellent review my friend, and all the best with the business and life in general. We'll be here, waiting for the next one ;)
My first car was a Nissan and I have fond memories of that car. Until 2022 I have always owned a Nissan, so it's safe to say I like the brand. It would be very sad if the brand dissapeared - they make good cars. Really hope they survive. Thanks for your comments and the coffees. Very much appreciated!
@@Carnold_YT I love Nissans too, on my fifth now (the Juke Hybrid). I hope they survive too🤞. No worries on the coffees, loving your work 😁.
1st !
Hey Joe, do you like the updated Qashqai?
would this apply for a 2000 LS400 as well?
For the largest part: yes. There are differences between the UCF10 and UCF20 chassis, but in terms of maintenance, it is the same.
Thanks for your time, knowledge and effort in producing this video. Looking at the Yaris cross and Kia xceed, leaning towards the Toyota with the 10 year warranty being a factor. Cheers.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated!
Beste Arnold, geweldige review! Dear Arnold, great review! I just ordered the Connecta Hybrid, a stock car. I understand well that Lane Departure can be dropped off through the menu and that it after e.g. a short stop remains and should not be deposited again and again? Because I would find it annoying if you had to drop this off after every stop.
Fantastic detailed review 👍
Thank you!
23:49 "it took me years to realize that you can take these covers off" 😂😂
Ja, sorry 😊
I advise doing a smoke test on all the vacuum hoses etc. Also test the Mass air flow sensor if not already done.
I will test the vacuum lines too, thanks for your input!
@Carnold_YT Did you check for any OBD fault codes and live data? Another suspect part could be the o2 sensors.
Well, this is an OBD1 car, so it is very limited in the amount of codes it can display: only in decimals in units, so basically from 0 to 99. Only the engine, transmission, and traction control ECU can display fault codes. Whatever the cause of the acceleration issue is, it is not registered by any ECU. Non of the ECU's is able to communicate livedata (this came much later with OBD2). I am working on a diagnostic tester combined with an oscilloscope to monitor several engine-ECU data. But that is something for a future episode, don't want to spoil that just yet.
Also bei 7000+ Umdrehung /min? Danke für ihr Video
With my chain sprocket ratio (I have a 15 teeth sprocket in front), the engine runs at 7.500 revolutions at 50-55 km/h. That is my cruising speed. The engine can rev higher, but that will destroy it if you cruise often with more than 8.500 rpm. Thank you for watching!
Starter generator is 250v not 12. Its an HSG.
You are correct, strange that I never noticed that during editing. Thanks for your comment!
My pleasure to help the channel, but mostly YOU Sir !
Legend 👏
I can't thank you enough Joe!
I love these LS400 episodes…thank you!
Thank you for watching, much appreciated!
Congrats on 35 episodes of the LS400! And shoutout to Joe for sending the fuel pressure regulator too.
Thank you Mike, I appreciate your support too!
The scale should be at 1 ft from the center of the drive.
A torque wrench has a design parameter called the Loading Length, on this wrench it is shown by the ring on the handgrip. This is the Loading Point, and measurement, calibration procedures and use of the tool must have the Force Loading applied at this distance from the fastener drive axis. Unless a wrench is specifically designed to have no length dependency, Force Loading anywhere else will result in incorrect torque measurement.
In this case I wanted to check the torque wrench in Newtonmeters, that's why I measured it out in centimeters.
@@Carnold_YT Unfortunately there's an occasional commenter who has only heard of the measurement expressed per foot, and hence thinks the measurement should be made at the foot length, not thinking that by the same rule, a Newton-Meter measurement would have to be taken one meter from the drive center - obviously neither is correct.
Is it reliable enough for work commute? What advice can you give to someone who wants to buy a used one?
Yes, it is a reliable bike if you don't tune the engine. If you're buying a used one, ask if the oil changes have been done every 2.500 km, and if the engine has been tuned. Especially the 70cc kits should be avoided. The best way to determine if a bike is worth considering (when you buy a used one) is to take a close look to the appearance: is it clean, are the wheels and spokes clean, is the chain clean and well lubricated. These bikes are reliable as long as they are well kept. Neglect is easy to spot, I would avoid those bikes if you're not technically inclined. But with a little bit of effort, you can turn a half decent bike into a reliable commuter bike.
@Carnold_YT I'm not technically inclined for now but there are not many choices to go after except this one for me. Pretty good advice over all, thanks!
