Farewell to Our Volkswagen Passat - Tom's Garage Fix
Unfortunately (or fortunately) we have now said "So long, farewell" to out 2003 Volkswagen Passat. It was a sad day to see this car drive away, but hopefully the new owner enjoys the car as much as we did. I really loved having this car as it taught me so many things in regards to D.I.Y. fixes.

    I like to keep in mind that you have to clean the oil cooler before installing new O ring. Sometimes dirt and grime gets behind the old one.. Causing a leak for the new O ring.

    Still driving my B5.5, 2002, 1.9TDI I have to say it's the best car I've had, If you keep on top of the issues/repairs.. Regular services and you should fly through the MOT as mine has done. Just put a new battery in after seventeen years, minor bodywork along the way, it's had a few bumps and knocks and three timing belts and water pumps while I've had it, runs like a dream... Still only just past 180,000 on the clock, used every day..

  • @dmcjustabloke3341

    I always removed the plastic weather shield at the bottom of the windscreen so as not to damage it and it makes it a lot easier to get the battery out and the new one in, you need to remove the wiper arms to do this (13mm nuts) with ease...Re connecting the battery is positive then negative, cheers.

    • @mda5003
      @mda5003 2 роки тому

      Too much extra work - no need to take out the weather shield and risk cracking the windscreen because it is a very tight fit (unless someone has previously removed it).

    • @dmcjustabloke3341
      @dmcjustabloke3341 2 роки тому

      @@mda5003 Like I said "I always removed the plastic weather shield at the bottom of the windscreen so as not to damage it" forcing the battery past it will split it, I guess it's a matter of choice and ability but it very easy to do and there is plenty of wiggle room. The only tricky part is re fitting but as long as you get the lip to bite along the back edge into the the recess along the bottom of the windscreen you're good, it just takes some patience and time sure but worth it. No chance of the screen cracking at all, I've done this on many B5's

      When you turn the key in the ignition and it makes a noise that’s very fast. Like a ddddddddd and the dashboard flashes fast then you may have a dead battery. If you’ve changed the battery and it still doesn’t work then I would assume it’s the starter. However starters and spark plugs don’t need to be changed for another 20-30K Miles in my opinion. Let me know how it goes!

    I am just like you my moms car sat for a long time. -- my first quote from a shop got me back into working on cars again so far about 900 bucks later it all seems to be in great shape - 2002 glx passat 4 motion automatic with everything. a solid car car that seems to hug ya when you get in. 145000 miles over 18 years is still what i would call half life on the thing. what ya think it;s worth. needs re-paint on driver fender - clear coated to protect it. few scratches and some minor other stuff.

      Yep! My Passat got me working on cars really. I do miss it a lot and someday when I have more room and spare money I would love to get another one. I miss the V6 and the comfy seats

    I'm planning on changing the oil in a few days, and while you use 5W 30, my owners manual for this engine says 5W 40. Is there any difference between the two that is particularly crucial? (excellent vid btw)

      The only difference is that 5w 40 is better suited for warmer temperatures. If you live in a hot climate than 5w40 is better. 5w30 is better in ‘normal’ weather conditions.

    Thanks m8. Always come to UA-cam first and here you are. Sure this is the issue with mine. Water puddle right underneath where you say the problem is and motor fine. Was going to look from the top but now I know exactly where to go. Champion! (now subscribed)
