Hi everyone!
This channel is about two families making the move from the U.S. to Europe (Spain in particular). My family has got my wife, myself and our 4 children all 10 years or younger. Our family friends also doing this channel with us have got the two of them and their 4 year old son.
We are hoping this channel shows some of our personal experiences of moving all over the United States (from Maryland, to Utah, to Ohio, to even Hawaii) before settling on moving overseas. Showing how much certain things cost for our family of 6 vs a family of 3.
Seeing the different European cities we each travel too; along with hopefully some helpful tips for anyone looking to do the same with their family.
We apologize in advance for not having the fanciest videos or catchy titles, but hopefully you find valuable information in how we made our move overseas; along with how we personally make money overseas / work remotely to even be able to afford a move as big as this one!

Is Valencia Spain Safe? Bonus: Things We Like & Dislike About Valencia Spain
Hi there, great video. Can you recommend international schools in Valencia? You mentioned you pay 600 euros a month for school. Most of the international schools I found charge more. Can you let me know what school you were referring to? This will be very useful as we have 2 kids.
I hope you realize that your private insurance is giving you a good service because they have the competence of a quite decent universal healthcare maintained by the government. If it wasn''t for that they would go "American" in the blink o an eye.
Spaniards dislike healthcare tourism, as everyone is contributing through taxation to maintain the system. If you pay taxes you are welcome to use it according to the national laws. Some day procedures are relatively cheap but other surgical operation are pretty complex and expensive. Bear in mind Spanish doctors have to study for six years, and then pass an additional exam called MlR. So an average of eight years is not cheap at all. If you intend to stay for more than 1 year, it would be beneficial to start learning Spanish, as in the USA immigrants are required to learn English.
This will probably change, because our quality of life and our healthcare costs a lot in taxes. We Spaniards cannot tolerate medical tourism. And please make an effort to learn Spanish.
Happy to say my wife is almost done with B2 and I am in the beginning stages of B1 so as we mentioned in the video we have been trying to learn Spanish; we simply we were not good enough at it when we went into the doctor our first year here to speak it fully. Also do want to make clear that we agree on the medical tourism part which is why our visa requires private health insurance and only going to specific doctors / hospitals to ensure we are not overwhelming the public hospitals / doctors which are already very busy!
"Expat" is white immigrants? 😂😂
If you wanna come to Spain, pay the taxes and register yourself here. We all are paying out the healthcare (year by year and monyh by month) and there's a lot of people from another countries who's coming here to get a surgery or be attended for free. Yes, we attend every pacient but cause we're humans and we think everyone have the right to a efficient and quality medical services, but you all are taking advanage of this. Start by changing your stinky country. You all are living in a insane country where anyone could shoot you in the middle of the street and where your government will left you dead if you're poor.
Añaden valor a tu país.
Is Evil Socialism.
Thanks. We’re moving to Valencia in October. Our daughter turns 3 in September. Do you have any suggestions for her in terms of daycare? Also, I’m going to get a student visa and study Spanish. Which schools do you recommend? Thanks!! 🙏🏽
Thank you! Your video helped so much! I'm going to Valencia next month and will make sure to stay in Russafa and stop by that lovely orange place :)
Here is a Spanish lawyer. The fact is that Spain has an agreement with the USA for compulsory coverage through health insurance, but if you were from a country without a bilateral agreement or even if you were irregular immigrants you would be entitled to Spanish health care completely free of charge as the law states: "Foreigners who are not registered or authorised as residents in Spain have the right to health protection and health care under the same conditions as people with Spanish nationality". All this has its origins in the health care provided by the Catholic Church for centuries, with a strong tradition in Spain, which freely assisted anyone who needed it. This system became generalised and in the early 1960s the right to free complete health care was legally regulated for any human being (whether Spanish or of any nationality) who needed it while on Spanish territory.
Spanish Doctor here. We have this health system due to very high taxes for Spanish workers. We cannot mantain it with inmigrants and tourist taking advantages of it. It is important that new inmigrants and tourist pay taxes to mantein it.
New immigrants are required to obtain private insurance in Spain and are not allowed to take from public healthcare, and that's a good thing. And any immigrants receiving public healthcare in Spain have residency and are paying the same high taxes as Spanish nationals. Spanish immigrants here in the US do have access to purchase government subsidized healthcare if they have no other means to obtain it. Unfortunately, we have very high taxes and zero benefits unless you are able to qualify as low income. Our system is highly stressed by the uninsured, both Americans and immigrants. Three weeks ago, I had to go to the hospital for one hour. My bill was $12,000. We have the same challenges but literally zero of the benefits go to those paying taxes. We just don't go to hospitals unless we are dying 😂
@@autumnlynnSpanish inmigrants to the US?? Lol, there are no spanish inmigrants in the US, you mean latinamerican inmigrants.
@@autumnlynnBesides, although by law immigrants in Spain are legally obliged to take out a private health insurance, most of them don't do it so they are treated by the national health service, making it worse and saturating it.
@@Ilar-en7lg Same thing here with immigrants. Millions upon millions from all over the world and many illegal. We are all in the same boat buddy. Except we don't get any healthcare as U.S. citizens.
In 1977 my Dad, living in Orange County, California, had his appendix removed. His had ruptured with lots of infection, he thought he had ingestion and walked around like this, and kept working for two and a half weeks. He was in the hospital for 9 days, and after insurance his bill was $32,000. Due to the infection visitors had to wear gowns and mask, and were charged for this, as well as being charged for Kleenex and the lemon mouth swabs. U.S. insurance is outrages. Today my sister in California pays $960/month just for her. I feel for people who can’t afford insurance. I live in Canada and our health coverage is great.
I also live in Canada, and yes we have a reasonable heathcare system, compared with the states, but it needs a lot of improvement compared to Europe! Our hospitals need a lot of updating, our new dental plan leaves out a lot of seniors and others because they have enrolled in private plans, the precriptions plan covers only two conditions! When we get a plan that overs all prescriptions, the private coverage clause will probably be in it again!
I live in the US and they just increased my premium and they also increased my deductible to $6,250. Except now they’re not even going to pay for prescriptions until I meet the $6,250 deductible. It’s so frustrating. And that’s crazy about the story with your dad. I believe it! They probably charged him $100 extra for each Kleenex he used. I’m joking… but I’m not. Also, I’m glad he’s okay!
soho, the theatre, stratford, crown jewels, the beer, yep, but go alone...lol...lotsa birds ...
Interesting info thank you.
A good sign of gratitude could learn spanish, just as english is requested for those moving to the states
Could not agree more!!! Aubrey is almost done with B2 and I am just beginning B1. Slowly but surely we are getting there!
I will not be the one to criticize the arrival of immigrants to my country, wherever they come from. Neither does anyone who denies the right to health and the best of science to achieve it. But immigrants have the obligation to know that the quality of the Spanish health service is due to the economic and solidarity sacrifice of workers in Spain and that it represents a large reduction in their salaries. Health care is not a right that is obtained free of charge in Spain. Currently there is a debate about whether we can afford health tourism in our country.
Totalmente de acuerdo
Obviously seeing this late but we do agree. This is why our visa required us to upfront pay for private health insurance for our entire family before they approved us moving to Spain. It is also why we need to use specific doctors & hospitals to ensure we are not flooding the public ones as people who have moved here. Overall a much different experience than the US, but something we are happy to keep paying for each year.
Worth mentioning perhaps that, according to latest World Health Organisation statistics as far as I am aware, Spain's National Healthcare system, is listed as 8th Best in the world...!! U.K., where I am from, is 38th....!! Not sure about U.S. but last time I knew U.S. was Below U.K. in world ranking... Also worth mentioning that for "Retirees" planning to move here, one can apply to join the Spanish National Health care system at a cost of currently 50 Euro's per month, about 40% less than most "Private Health Care Plans" and far more inclusive as well..!
We had no idea. That is incredible and can say now 2 years in we have been very happy with our private health insurance & care we have received here!
Thanks for an informative video. I’d love to be a subscriber, but found myself frustrated by the number of times the woman was interrupted. I didn’t count the times but it felt like the guy really thought he offered a lot more than her. In fact, she seemed to know much more about the subject and was more enjoyable to listen to because she valued the input of her partner.
Unfortunately we shot our next 20+ videos coming out before I saw this comment but something I will try to keep in mind for future videos :) - Mike
😊
Good evening , could you be kind to share your experience about estimating your income taxes your family will be paying at the end of the year
England Swings!
Please keep this secretly otherwise European countries will increase the premiums for expat. Thanks😢

Inmigrants. No expats.
@@javierperezdelgado4999 Expats go to a country for a short period of time and then return home. We have a LOT of expats here in the U.S. from all over the world, including Spain, working temporary jobs or going to school or just being digital nomads. We also have immigrants who have made this their home. It's an important distinction and there is no reason for either of those words to have a bad connotation. For me, both are welcome.
@yasmeenmah9810 "European countries will increase the premiums for expat." European countries don't have any kind of premium or fee for people who comes legally to the EU from other countries outside the EU. Private insurances that must contract those people who cames legally to Europe do, because they are not european citizens, so don't blame "european countries" but private corporations greed. Btw, the difference between an expat and an immigrant is that it's unknown if an expat have the intention to live permanently in the new contry, while an immigrant has.
Hi, I was thinking of possibly moving to Valencia with two children. How are your children doing in public school? and what bilingual private school did you initially enroll your child? Thanks
hello, i have question about sports. I saw a lot of football courts in Valencia, but are they free and open to play with kids? Second one: What club do you train at? do they speak English there? :)
Great tips, thanks for sharing!
It’s difficult to understand the Europe, the dollar . The value of the dollar is very less than the euro . Need a side-by-side person.
Hi! I was curious how it's going for your kids in public school? I'm a little worried about valenciano requirements and how an English speaker would do there (though she understands Spanish pretty well). Thank you and thanks for the video!
2000 a year for 3 persons to gain acces to the best worldwide healthcare where your life got no price and there's -obviously- no limit coverage? A real no limit coverage where they will do EVERYTHING, not the 400K that is not even 60% of this? My god i am spaniard and i think this is super cheap. Now i got why you're paying like twice the price we're paying for rent, since you're saving everything on healtchare (And maybe avoiding some other taxes)
Does Uber/taxi require car seats for your 5 year old?
So how much all added up does it cost for all this for a month and then for a year? I have no clue what a euro is worth.
You guys sound very candid. Thanks for your honest approach.
Excellent video, Maru and Mario. Thank you. We are 66YO retired educators visiting Poland and Estonia after helping a new school open in Lviv. We are seriously thinking of selling our Portland condo and moving to Europe. We appreciate the safety, walkability, and excellent healthcare offered in Spain. Is renting a better option than owning a home for expats in Spain? We always wanted to own, but now it seems that putting the cash in CDs is wiser than purchasing a home. Plus the healthcare is better in Spain than in the US. Your thoughts? Dean & Cindy
Hi Dean & Cindy, So I would 100% rent for your first year in Europe, just to make sure you guys like your new living situation. While buying can get you the Golden Visa (which is awesome) making sure you are happy where you are and getting a feel for the area for 6-12 months is never a bad idea! I would personally not say the healthcare is better than the US in the sense of hospitals like Cleveland Clinic or the Mayo Clinic are just incredible, but what I can say is the Spanish doctors are very knowledgeable and our health insurance covers 15 visits a year 100% in the premium we pay. No co-pay, deductibles or out of pocket which is VERY different than what we are used to living in the United States. Not having to wonder if this MRI & hospital stay will wipe out your entire savings is just such a relief; so for that alone Spain wins it for Healthcare :)
Great overview! My wife is Spanish & in retirement we spend 3 months in Valencia & our daughter decided to live in Spain for some time & I forwarded your video. Your report was very efficient and informative - well done !
How much is a euros in USA money?
Hi! So it changes constantly but right now I think it is 1 USD = .92 EURO so the Euro is stronger currently. There was a month or so last year I swear USD was stronger and that was fun while it lasted :)
Could you suggest some good neighborhoods? We’re also a family 3 looking to move next year :)
So it really does depend on where you are looking to live. Inside the Turia we love Gran Via, Rusafa, and Arrancapins as good starting points to take a look!
@@simplifyabroad899 fantastic! I have a 9yr old son. Would he have to learn two different languages if he went to school in Valencia?
Hey folks. Thank you so much for the video. I couldn't hear properly what that site was that is similar to Zillo. Could you tell me what it was?
Hi! Sorry so most people here use IDEALISTA as the Zillow equivalent!
Hi, this is a really good video and very informative. We are in the position that we have been considering moving to Valencia for some years so it is good to have a first hand account (particularly the child care and school advice). Thank you.
Glad it was helpful. If you ever have any other questions let us know and maybe we can make a video to help others as well!
Hello you moved from the United States to Spain, and I moved to Canada from Spain long time ago 😅 and I have subscribed to your channel
Thanks for subscribing! Maybe one day you will make the move back to Spain :)
Very informative video, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Really informative video!! I'll reach out for Monica's info :)
Awesome. Just responded to your email with her information! Congrats on the upcoming move to Valencia!
Great video , please share Monica’s Info
Can I know which football club you registered your son ?
Hi. We have moved clubs since then but we simply walked into the Turia and joined the first club we saw there. There are like 5 of them in there so whichever one is closest to you would be my recommendation! Obviously this is best if you are living near city center as the further out you live then you will usually only have 1-2 clubs close to you!
Hello,
Can an American move to Spain and start driving for Uber/cabify?
Hi! So obviously I would double check with someone more knowledgeable than me but I would assume you need a work visa to start working in Spain. Even as a gig driver but I could be wrong.
“Sorry my information” was just a flex. Could’ve just put a box over it but wanted to brag about it
I'm a bit confused? The red arrow is covering my product name / niche in the back end of my Shopify store. I guess maybe I shouldn't have chosen an arrow to cover it but in all my videos I opening show what I made each month (good and bad). Ill choose a different clip art next time!
I love drop shipping and this is an amazing video thank you
Glad you liked it. Got 3 more coming out this week!
Hello Maru and Mario. Nice and informative video. My wife and I are semi-retired. We are looking at part-time retirement in Valencia (3-5 months/year, split between spring and fall) Do you have any websites or resources for apartments to rent or buy in the city center area and other ex-pat info? Thank you, enjoyed your video. Jorge
Hi! So we did end up using a real estate agent (like Engel & Volker) but most people moving over who try to do it on their own use the website IDEALISTA as that is basically the Spain version of Zillow. Hope that helps!
