Ep 302 - Why We Believe Nutrition Lies
In this Iron Culture, Sigma Nutrition Radio, SNA crossover, Dr. Joe Klemczewski returns! Dr. Joe, possibly the first online bodybuilding coach and person to advise clients to track macros before IIFYM was an acronym, joins us to reflect on the past and help us navigate the future. In the modern information age, there is more information than ever, which is a good thing, right? Perhaps, except that there is also more misinformation and disinformation than ever as well. While the evidence-based movement solved the problem of information inadequacy, we now face a much more complex problem of information illiteracy. What can you do to better navigate the “fake news” littering all aspects of social media, especially the nutrition space, and how can you facilitate better critical thinking in your clients and followers to reduce the likelihood they will undertake harmful diets? In this episode we tackle just that, discussing how paying attention to history and social changes can provide protection against modern fads.

MASS Office Hours Episode 61 (The Lost Episode)
Переглядів 78914 днів тому
The Lost Episode of MASS Office Hours will be discussed for decades to come. Was the episode buried and all copies destroyed because it was simply too controversial? Did the hosts reveal a secret too dangerous to publish? Did Eric accidentally delete the episode by hitting the wrong button after they recorded? We may never know. In this re-recorded episode of MASS Office Hours, Dr. Eric Trexler...

MASS Office Hours Episode 8 (Peaking Your Physique)
I asked the question about the reps going down at rpe 2, and I think they hit the cause. The program has a 2 minute rest period instead of the usual 3+ I was doing before. Seems obvious in hindsight, but still awesome to get an answer. Thanks!
Hi! Awesome content, as always. I just wanted to add to the eccentric conversation. As a physiotherapist, eccentric exercises are often used to treat tendinopathies, since it has shown to help with the healing process. Also, regarding motor control, it's usually in this phase where people tend to lose it. So it's always helpful to work on it or emphasize the eccentric portion occasionally. If you'd like papers for context, I'm happy to provide some.
Where's the "Eric" ?
Really quiet for my earphones at max volume
You guys are funny😊
Killer 10 minutes of good intro music. That's science baby. These new 2 am Tuesday streams are cool. Looking forward to spending the 2-3 week Christmas vacation spent with watching fresh MASS/Iron Culture episodes. And like 5 Zourdos velocity based training episodes. But I'd say whales are the cool ones, they tried the land life and just decided to go back in the ocean, said goodbye to the rest of tetrapods that had just crawled out. Is the obesity rate of Japan purely from sumo athletes? I've been really curious about this late growth, because my experience has often been that during training weeks I haven't noticed that much difference, but then it's got pretty tough and I had to have a full deload week without training, maybe even two for circumstances like holidays, and it felt like over that week I was growing in a way that was noticeable. It could be an illusion, but it felt and looked odd. Perhaps the reduced stress and fatigue decreases fluid storage and makes the muscles pop up better?

great discussion!
What a great episode. Something I've been thinking about for years now. I appreciate the insight. Keep up the good work!
Great show!
I have no idea what his show is about anymore. Eric cohosts Mass with guest cohost Danny, with a guest on Iron Culture. Or something. Wait this sounds exactly like original Stronger By Science but with guests. And it ended up being tuesday release, just like original Iron Culture when it said every monday. And Omar was never shy about selling out for money and power, it's only fitting he left Iron Culture for his own business. I thought the academia was of the opinion that it has massive utility, and it has risks. Although I was probably thinking more of the section of academia that discusses AI being malevolent the more intelligent it becomes. And try to figure out ways to overcome the challenges of intelligent past human AI being able to hide its malevolence. Like writing backdoors in code or trying to gaslight a person to get rid of their spouse (like Bing AI). A good example of range of reactions to AI could be in music scene where some were scared that the AI floods the market with nonsense music, while Dream Theater's Jordan Rudess is working with MIT to develop their AI so Jordan can play a bit on keyboard and the AI will throw him back a part that sounds like he could've played it. To get ideas and have back and forth with the AI to develop your parts. I'm also happy to inform that right after Russia's invasion on Ukraine Finland also started educating kids on misinformation due to Russia feeding just about every source, and there being a notable minority of Russians in Finland who basically get their news from Russian sources that are all now pretty much exclusively state propaganda (which is also why the national broadcasting agency started releasing news in Russian as well). I would almost like to show this episode to someone who has 0 interest to physique and nutrition, but who doesn't quite understand what science and scientists do and what's up with misinformation and handling it.
Bot comments are getting weird y’all
Oops
Look forward to this show every week. Thanks 👍
It is so sad to see Omar leave iron culture 😢
The contrast of Lauren glowing and Eric's beard.
Rodent people, Among Us... Dr. Trexler is certainly catching up on pop culture reference 😂
There's obviously reasons we dont get 4 hosts at once but this was way funnier and more engaging than normal.
I know it's too much to ask, but wouldn't it be cool to have all four folks on every week? Such a valuable discussion!👍(And one Q: Are we still gonna get the smooth-jazz hold music before the show starts? Pleeeeeeease?!🤞)
You’ll have to request this from DJ Trex

Oh this is huge, with the loss of SBS i need something to look forward to and am a new mass fan. Lets fucking go

OK. I guess you can move Office Hours to Mondays. That's fine. But ya gotta be sure to wrap it up before midnight, when Dragula comes on. No six hour lengthened partials deep dives, ya hear?
Regarding the last segment. Someone claiming they are science based doesn’t mean they’re right when debating a topic. Most people who identify as such are far from it. Researchers, 1st hand communicators, 2nd, 3rd etc … and most guys who fight for their life in the comments are mostly casuals who just want internet points. Assuming they’re right because they think themselves science or evidence based is just an empty assumtion. Also, the’re an epidemic of science based guys bastardising perfectly fine exercices and basically making them worse for the sake of innovation. Most science based internet fighters are just fanboys taking for granted their ideas and running with them flexing in everyone’s comments section saying words they don’t really understand. That’s basically most interactions. Researchers and phd’s don’t do that, so who does? Casuals copy pasting half understood other people’s ideas.
pretending this is a reference to spongebob lolol
such a good space to follow, one of the few nowadays, thank u ☺️
51:52 fruitless errand, i see what you did there 😅
Lol I can't believe I caught the missing episode at 48 minutes in and just popped in to like the video and go to bed, decided to watch it later. I could've been very confused if I didn't happen to start watching this before trying to look that missing episode up. I knew Trexler was a wrestler when he was young, but I never expected him to film WWE at university work place hallways. I'd like to suggest one more category of situations where unilateral work might be in place and where asymmetry might cause issues ( I do believe the asymmetries in muscle size and strength might be more of an indication of something else going on than root cause). Sports training being your primary goal. My anecdotal story is having had pretty decent amount of imbalance between left and right side of the body (like visibly different back musculature and side musculature with bare eyes like asking "who took a bite on your side" and hip rotation ranges, the hip position was also a bit more biased than the "normal" bias is) that really didn't affect daily life. Except things like slapshots in ice hockey rink felt like pulling a groin and doing weightlifting (olympic, i.e. sport training with lots of power without slow controlled muscle ranges, perfect opportunity to enhance the imbalances with compensation) with relatively heavy squats, then adding even judo, I started experiencing pain in ankle dorsiflexion and knee pain (on one side). The unfortunate side of judo is that even though it's learned on both sides, you heavily emphasize the strong and comfortable side, which might further progress your problem. I tried improving the ankle dorsiflexion and different things for ankle for perhaps 6 months or more, not really succeeding. With knee I was just hoping that trying to keep the knee "open" to the outside when bending helped. Until I paid attention to the hip mobility and the way I compensated in different sports movements, and dedicated a serious consistency to hip mobility. Relievingly over the weeks the amount of ankle pain and knee pain both started to fade away until there was only a small different feeling at the end range of that ankle's dorsiflexion and knee pain didn't happen at all. And notably that year long period of pains was the time I just couldn't fit something like bulgarian split squats in the program, which usually provide a pretty nice technique and mobility training for hip (one side experiences much more stretch during the exercise for me). And I've come to notice issues like this seem to be surprisingly common with weightlifters who don't pay attention to mobility or don't do unilateral work. Perhaps I've misjudged my situation, but I was pretty happy to find a solution. Regarding back I needed to learn shoulder control on one side and avoid compensating lat or scapulae work with upper trap and I saw great improvements in size and strength balance, apparently also fairly "common" thing in general public.
I was sure you were silenced by the algorithm for talking down about our lord and savior lengthened partials. So glad you re-recorded this one.
I make that hotel coffee, too. I'm paying for it in the room rate, aren't I?! (Glad to see the episode didn't sink into the sands of time.)
I was wondering where it went, ty for this!
Nice! Will tune in Monday fs
Leaving a like and a generic comment, and watching long enough to count as a view. But now it's time for Matlock.
So much appreciation for re recording ❤ totally didn’t have to do that
Was there a live show this week? Not seeing it in the feed
It seems to have been deleted for some reason. Really bummed, I got interrupted part way through watching and can’t watch it back
Can we expect the timestamps?
40:19 program for the real Gs
Make sure you're muted when you're not the presenter, people. Thanks 👍
Wrong timestamps again. Kindly fix your timestamps please. Thank you!
Yo Trex my iPhone battery would love if you upload this to Spotify ❤
Why are we discussing bed ridden hospital patients on a Mass research podcast 🤔. I had to turn it off 📴.
if we just said "no, those supplements aren't anti-catabolic," we'd cause more confusion than clarity because 1) they technically are (in some circumstances), and 2) some people will inevitably cite those studies on extreme conditions of atrophy when claiming that lifters should use them. It's worthwhile to describe why this literature is often misunderstood and misapplied to other populations/scenarios

I was wondering why Judge Eric sounded familiar. He's Mega City One's second best judge.

I get more reps with my right arm for many curling variations but my left arm is 1/4 inch bigger
Looking at the interaction with exercise selection: : ) Not looking at the interaction with rest periods when shown experimentally that you need more volume to compensate for short rest periods: : (
My biggest concern about the volume is (and again, amazing work great content) for volume at 30 sets or 40 sets per muscle group is fatigue management. Because it's just SOOOO fatiguing to do that, consistently, and as a natty, for like 6 months. Idk I'm at 52:00 amd that's whats striking me like. How can you do it and manage recovery?
You might not be able to. Do whatever volume you can that matches your efficiency needs, keeps your joints and tendons feeling relatively healthy, and keeps your psychological drive to train high enough. Even if on paper a higher weekly set number would potentially deliver better hypertrophy, if it comes at a cost of injury, decreased training quality, or not enough time to do things that matter more than training, it's not going to be "optimal" for you.
At 1:45:00, they cover your question!
