Correctly prep, export, and inject HDR10 Plus metadata from DaVinci Resolve (Part 2/2)
Part two of a tutorial demonstrating the process used in DaVinci Resolve [17] on Mac, to export the necessary HDR10+ metadata required to trigger tone-mapping on HDR10+ capable displays, such as a TV. I admit this is probably already a niche use-case - and likely will fade into obscurity as Dolby Vision (DoVi) becomes the preeminent HDR standard!

The Royal Swan Uppers visit Burcot on Thames (2024)

More diamond geezer than crusty custodians of a quaint royal tradition, the Royal Swan Uppers provide a colourful - and important - curatorial service to the Thames' most recognisable wildlife. Salt of the earth indeed! (For tech-nerds: video & stills shot on Canon 5D3 running Magic Lantern crop mode UHD 1:1, 3072 x 1536, 12bit, graded and upscaled to 4K in DaVinci Resolve. Bow Wow Wow - Go Wild in the Country - Bass - Playing Notes
Переглядів 460Рік тому
Leigh Gorman's bass playing thrilled and inspired me when I was sixteen. In the many intervening years I somehow managed to lose that thrill. Silly me… Time to share the 'Leigh-Love' once again. This video is my analysis of Leigh's epic bass-line; some playing notes, and a pdf transcription of the classic Bow Wow Wow 80s anthem. Quality content focusing on Leigh's masterly bass playing is eithe...

Canon R5 PQ vs C-Log 3. Noise comparison

I don't have much success exposing C-Log to avoid noisy shadows. Is shooting in the PQ setting as an alternative to C-log the answer?

Fix HDR tone-mapping in Chrome MacOS
Переглядів 6703 роки тому
UPDATE This Chrome extension does a much better job than my hack of bringing back the blown highlights: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adjust-video-brightness/fncjpeelcffbldedcpdenhcgjdkpkbmm Until we get a proper Chrome solution, this is a hacky temporary fix for HDR not being tone-mapped correctly in Chrome on MacOS 10.15.7 ('Gather-windows' command is F3 on my keyboard). PS I've no idea w...

From the instruction manual: "The value of the meter reading should be added to the number to which the attenuator is set, thus obtaining the sound level indication in decibels (dB)."

Fantastic work in all aspects and an educational gem for any bass player. I really liked BWW as a young bass player at the time, when it first came out with the tribal rythmn undercurrent supported by these fantastic bass lines. I, same as yourself and thousands of other bass players I am sure, overlooked the at the time brilliance being played out within these tracks and focussed on the fusion players you have already named JP etc. Thankyou again, the transcription is excellent and helped me enormously in breaking down the apparent complexity.
Thanks for your encouraging comments. I'm glad the video was helpful. More than overlooking the brilliance of Leigh at the time, I think I was just stunned into silent non-comprehension; I knew it was technically way over my head at that time and so moved on. It's taken awhile to get to grips…😉
How im the world does this video have so few views? That was brilliant work, hats off! And hats off to Leigh - not only for being able to play such a line (let alone at such a young age - he was ca. 21 back then if I remember correctly) but especially for comming up with it! That's quite incredible, I'd say. He's definitely underappreciated. All that said, I really don't like how he (along the rest of the band) treated Annabella in the long run. Why did they kick her out without even telling her remains a mystery.
Thanks for this, great work!
I found this video thanks to your Leigh Gorman short! Gonna learn it... one day. Maybe.
Hi @DannySapko Thanks for dropping by BEHS!. 👍Leigh's Wal tone is such a signature sound. Would love to hear your take on it someday.
Funny you mentioned “not playing too many notes” as this is exactly the opposite instruction Malcolm Maclaren gave to Leigh. He told him “more notes!” So glad to finally find some people showcasing LGs Bow Wow Wow work. He is so underrated. I just love his bass playing. To think he was like 23 or so when composing these lines. Just phenomenal playing. If I could play the bass, I’d like to play like him.
Great video. Canon have been drip feeding video quality and features for years. Handful of unpaid devs got the mark 3 to sing. Would love to see what they could get the R5 to do!
Thank you!
what picture profile were you using?
This was Neutral I believe. But I've since used Faithful - better for skintones I think!
Thank you for being bomd enough to dissect one of Leigh's phenomenal bass lines.
Excellent work, sir! Thank you!!
Glad to find your channel, fellow upright bass player. Nice to hear upright bass in this sort of ambient music context as it is not typical to my experience. Cheers!
Thanks! Ambient isn't normally my vibe either - but this was an exception where the upright just fitted in I think.
discovered the band and LG just 2 weeks ago, what a revelation! Great video and transcription work here, thanks!
Many thanks! Glad you've discovered Leigh's work. Share the love!
Really good video, sounds like you have it right.. Leigh is brilliant , shame you don't have tab, i don't read music.
Thanks! Hopefully you'll be able to see the most important fingerings and positions in the demo sections. To be honest it's TAB that has always confused me!
@@timbytheriver Tab is easy to follow, i'll try, you should do more of his stuff.
The advantage of clog3 is when there are super bright parts in the frame. PQ would clip but clog3 can preserve more highlights. If we care more about shadows, we can preserve more shadows and get better noise performance by over exposing by around a stop when recording. This would lead to better details and lower noise in shadows. Exposure can be then reduced in post to crush unwanted shadow noise if needed.
Thanks! I see this to be true in practise also. However, if you examine the waveform of Clog3 in the scopes, it always seems to contain nasty artefacts and lines - however much over 0EV it is exposed. Also, with Log, if you simply don't have any more light available - or a wider aperture, you're just stuck with horribly noisy shadows.
Just saw him play last night. What an epic talent.
You're lucky to have Leigh on US shores now - I'm very jealous! 😋There are a few notes of the transcription I'd like to check with him in person if I could.
They were my first concert. The Beat with BWW and REM opening. Was for the Going Gets Tough tour. Still the best concert I’ve ever been to. Love watching any footage of Leigh playing.
Interesting. I will try it. I am disappointed that the R6 does 10 bit 4.2.2 only in log. I thought the R6 did 10 bit 4.2.2 also in linear. Had I known this, I would have got a different camera. I don’t like using log (noise in shadows essentially). But this workflow might save it, provided the colours are good. 👍🙏
I have the same problem on my Macbook pro 2021. What extension is that? its gone!
But do you have continues recording in those modes and real time preview ? Maybe with hdmi output!
This man did some stuff for my junior school af wessex in the 70s...
Nice lynchian vibe.
What does rec 2020 PQ stands for?
perceptual quantizer, published by SMPTE as SMPTE ST 2084, is a transfer function that allows for HDR display by replacing the gamma curve used in SDR. It is capable of representing luminance level up to 10000 cd/m² and down to 0.0001 nits.
Ive never seen this but then usually HDR doesnt get enabled unless your display supports EDR , which if you get a blown out image it doesnt. Is this some hackintosh or something with a imac EDID? I can play this back in chrome no problems on a late 2018 macbook in BigSur. You will only get the SDR tonemapped version from youtube if your display doesnt get reported as EDR/HDR capable.
Apparently anything earlier than Big Sur 11 displays this problem with Chrome. My mac is is a Retina iMac 4k which does have EDR support. I reported the 'bug' to Chrome devs, but I don't believe it is going to be fixed for earlier OS versions. :(
@@timbytheriver ah interesting! I only have bigsir EDR capable machines so i havent noticed that.
Just a FYI Apple stopped using the name 'Mac OS X' 5 years ago with Sierra and it's called 'MacOS'.
Thanks! I'm showing my age… ;)
@@timbytheriver Don't worry, it took me 2 years to break that habit myself
Great demonstration, Tim.
Thanks John! It's all a bit voodoo until Chrome gets a proper fix!
