I could not agree more with your opinion on compression test. If it won’t idle low… that’s when compression is getting too low. Thank for the content.
As long as it runs is good enough for me! Been working on trying to hone and put new rings in, for those pesky motors where it’s too low
60 PSI is on the low side. Ive repaired and owned many of these. Mine have all been at 90psi and they run very well on 90psi. 60psi it will run but not have near the power it should have and can be hard starting.
100% agree! But sometimes you work with what you have, it will at least run on 60. Should tick up a bit after running awhile too, had been sitting for quite a while
I'd like to see what the compression is now that you have it running.
I can re test it and let you know, always ticks up a bit after running them
you wouldn't happen to have the old manual for that by chance?
I don’t have the specific manual for it. But I may have the general clymer manual for that set of years. What info do you need?
That is the gearshift on the side the throttle is the front handle
Yessiree
Is that a 5hp
7.5hp
I have a 1959 Johnson 3.5 with the weedless lower unit self contained fuel tank 50-1gass oil mix on it it told me to mix 1 gt of 30 grade motor oil to a 6 gallon tank it had sat for years the neadal valve was stuck and fuel bowel was a sludge factory checked compression new J4 plugs pushes my 10ft John boat fine carry a 1 gallon Jerry can with me for extended range never used it as to fishing all day and half of the built in tank
Those little 3 or 3.5hp are gems! And I think they’re massively under rated on the hp. I fixed a 59 3hp and I could go 5mph on a 16 foot flat bottom! Great motors
i dont think u need to take the air vent screw out of top olf the fuel cap
Yup it ends up it was a fuel line issue below the tank itself! Replaced it and it worked better the vent hole was also completely clogged which means with the vent screw in it out it wasn’t functioning the way it should have.
i have watched many many impeller videos , no one uses an impact on those screws
Just easier for me to break them loose. I don’t have the hammer style breakers from back in the day. And lazier way than by hand
Stored in building with wood floor around same price.would like to see somebody use it
You can polish your hammer faces to prevent the hammer from transferring whatever dings or scratches on its face to metal parts you hit with it. Don’t know how useful it would be for this application but i bet there are some parts that could do with a little less marring. Free tech tip of the day
Great job
You definitely have carburetor problems I'm betting the hight speed ideal and the jet are plugged up what I use is welding tip cleaners
Great tip! It ends up the packing needed replaced in the carb! I’ll cover more on the next episode!
Thanks for the video man. I love learning more about outboards. Plus you area regular guy and very relatable. I am now a new subscriber.
Appreciate the love! I love tinkering on all these outboards! I’ll have more coming soon
That would go great on my 1965 12ft boat
Would make a classic look!
That's a good looking engine!
Oh my that's a good looking engine!
Looks like a fun job!
