Making a short film on 16mm film | Day 1 of 4
Shooting a short film on 16mm film in rural Montana. Welcome to Day 1 of our four-day shoot on 16mm! 🎥
This film is a period short funded by the Big Sky Montana Film grant, and we raised more funds to shoot this on 16mm film. It's a dream come true for us.
We start the marathon and we are faced with more problems that any film would want to see, one of which that involves a car... and a bit Spoiler alert: when they say, "Anything can happen on set," they really mean it!
Follow us along this vlog series If you've ever wondered what it's like to create a short film on analog film, 16mm in our case. Don't forget comment, and subscribe so you can follow the rest of our journey. Day 2 is just around the corner... hopefully, with fewer surprises!

In todays part vlog, I go over the last few days leading up to day 1 of production for Lone Mountain, a short film we are shooting on 16mm film. I breakdown the final trip I had to pick up my stock from Kodak that I got for free and had to fly in to pick it up, as well as our film camera kit we were shooting on (Arriflex SR2). It was all going great! Until I realized I wasn't going to make it b...

A short documentary I created as an early filmmaker for a college class about water rights in Idaho. It made me realize this topic is so much more important and how little we take water for granted. These last few months have been more difficult in water rights and fighting in Idaho, and I felt it was a good time to resurrect this 6 year old project to start a conversation and bring more awaren...

Awesome document. Thanks so much for putting this out. Hey, weird question: I notice you were using a 516 Manfrotto head, do you happen to know what sticks its on top of? They appear to be Manfrotto legs, but I was wondering if you knew the model number.

@@tannerbrowningfilms I actually think I nailed it down to being the 546B Manfrotto sticks, with like a ball-mount-to-flat-base adapter. But thank you for your reply, just the same. Really motivational to watch this process! Sorry for the way-too-specific question.

Very cool video to see creators going for film and jumping right in! I wish more people would document the process for the indie folks. Can't wait to watch more! And to save a little film, don't roll camera until after you've called the slate. You've got the slate call on audio, then all you need on the film is a second or two to see the slate info and see it close.

Looks like a pretty professional set-up - cast and crew. Reminds me of my first real effort on a short. Films great cause it forces you to plan better and roll with the punches that life gives you. Plus it looks like a real movie when your done, not like a corporate video.

Great Job on this! I think the composition and content of this film was excellent. The interview segments you chose and the cinematography you chose (as well as the musical score) was very similar to something i would expect from FRONTLINE, or a similar outlet. This issue is really important right now, and most people don't understand the implications of these issues 5-10 years from now. I would encourage you to do a piece on the disrepair of the canal systems, and why current political nonsense is preventing repair from the snake. I subscribed to you and encourage you to continue making content!

Steven Spielbergs passion project was “”The Fabelmans.” “ROMA” was Alfonso Quarón’s lifetime passion project l. “Megalopolis,” was Francis Ford Coppola’s. A “Passion Project,” isn’t filming sunset. Each of those directors made those films 35-45 years ago and felt they needed to be ready and at the top of their craft. Like this, it’s a passion project I’ve wanted to do (and planning it out over 4 years ago, and paid out of my own pocket, money I had saved years to do so. Went to Tokyo, Japan for a few months. I’m a TV commercial director with my twin brother for the last 20 years. And going to Japan to film was a massive challenge, but such an amazing to do. Also Chris shot my short film in Japalllm

I like the video. One thing - ASC is not a union or a guild. All (American) union camera technicians are part of local 600 under IATSE. ASC is a private organization of top level cinematographers who are invited to join and have the goal of promoting the craft. All union cinematographers belong to local 600, but only a small fraction of them are members of the ASC.

people usually say its the grain in film thats the difference over digital.. for me, it's the look of tangibility. Digital doesn't produced those chemical real world colors. film you can hold in your hand. digital.. the image exist no where in reality.

I think it's quite the opposite. On film, you are not watching the "colors of reality" but a magical representation of reality. Think about it, if you would time-travel to the 1970's, it wouldn't look like "Taxi Driver", it would look like a digital rendering of the 1970's because the way our eyes perceive reality is same as the digital image.
