Unlocking History: The Tale of Stafford’s Forebridge Lockup
Built in the early 18th century from stones of a medieval hospital and part of a 17th-century inn, this Grade II listed building was used to detain local drunks and vagrants. Despite its demolition in the 1970s to make way for the Queensway ring road, the lockup was carefully re-erected nearby.

Sketching & Painting

I love to sketch and draw, and even paint when I get chance. It's a great thing to do to relieve stress! Here is a sketch I've done today, can you guess which famous Stoke-on-Trent hall this is and who it belonged to? I'll put this for sale on my website probably tomorrow if anyone would be interested in prints etc. Some of my other bits are on there but I need time to add more! www.theredhaire...

Join me as I explore the Viking Re-enactment at Stafford Castle! The sun was shining, the event was packed, and there was so much to see and do. I tried archery with the Six Towns Archery Company, explored the historic castle, and learned from the fantastic Y Ddraig Stoke Vikings. Huge thanks to Historic Stafford for putting together such a brilliant event. This day was a perfect mix of educati...

Tilstone House, Cheshire: From Aristocratic Splendour to a Tragic End

Although I focus on the history of North Staffordshire, when I discovered this house, I needed to tell its sad story. So it may be in Cheshire, but I'm sure you will agree, that it is a tragedy to lose such a stunning house and the history that goes with it. Tilstone House, a majestic neo-Tudor mansion built in 1888, has stood as a testament to aristocratic elegance and architectural grandeur f...

This unassuming artefact, now largely forgotten, carries with it a rich history th...

Rumours has it, the remains of The White Lion Pub after being dismantled, were just chucked in a field and largely forgotten about. I know a few who lay claim to having bits of it either in their gardens or on the allotments round here. Won't be the first time Stafford council has made a big mistake, certainly won't be the last xx

I'm guessing by the state of the roadway and the pavements that the council has never adopted them, but that they are to this day the common property of the house owners, who don't cooperate well enough to fund the upkeep of the common parts.

I've not been in the Villas since the mid-80's :D I don't recall how but I got invited to a big party there and spent the entire night earnestly and drunkenly discussing many deep and important things ... or so twenty year old self-important me thought :grins: I am trying to recall which house it was - definitely on the left as you go into the street ... maybe the second house along?

History dictates if you were (as a woman) attractive you were a witch (jealousy) if you were a "bit odd" (fear) you were a witch. If you were clever or a nature educated (herbology and the like) you were a witch. Men didn't like clever women centuries ago.

My first thought is that it was Mill Meece but that chimney has more prominent collars and, of course, has all the buildings nearby :) It's not Etruria, I think, as that chimney is square sectioned. The same for Chatterley Whitfield.

Fascinated to have come across your channel, duck :D Especially in these difficult times where we can sometimes think it seems like our history is coming to an end, it is good to look back at the depth and length of the roots to bind us to our place. I'm a Cheadle lad originally but lived in various places around Stoke in the 80's and 90's. I was also an assistant to the curators of the City and Gladstone museums for a number of years and developed quite a knowledge of our ceramics industry over the centuries - I still remember spending a summer in the bowels of the City Museum identifying and cataloguing finds from the Abbey Hulton digs. Industrial Age archaeology is fascinating because the things that were in place were often huge but they did not sit in the landscape for very long (in historical terms) because things moved on so rapidly. Piecing together the arc of the story of a location is very satisfying, even if half the time the best we can do is admit we don't know :)

It really would be interesting to know for sure what happened here during the war :). The last time I was there was in the 80's, back in my biker days and all I can say is that the ravers treated the place with less respect than we did! So sad to see an old site like that so marred with the terrible spray-paint menace that some people try to claim is art rather than vandalism.

The Police and council have destroyed Hanley! One time Ludicrous did a gig at Zenn And a few days later they were told by the police and council “your music attractors the wrong crowd” They were reported and after that the club was raided by the police every Fri/sat without fail! Nobody wants to invest hard earned money in a shit hole with Donkeys as police.
