Really cool place, really cool system. I know it's not perfect, but I'm very impressed with the speed and determination behind building out the Metro do Porto. A huge thank you again to Manuel Vilares and Paulo Pinho for sharing their expertise.
See you in the next video - it'll be a special one :^)

The full (ish) story of how #Lima got Línea 1. I went to #Peru for the Inca Trail and couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about Lima's #Metro system 🤓 - because it's surprisingly good for a city with such informal transit. Lima's challenges with the Metro are shared by plenty of other South American cities - and beyond - making for what might be the most interesting procurement story so fa...

How Washington DC fixed their Metro’s biggest problem

A Silver Line appreciation video :^) I visited my friend in #DC recently and was surprised to find a direct airport rail link, since many US cities don’t have that. I was even more surprised that it took over an hour, which takes this line into distances far beyond the scope of most metro systems.⁄ So I looked more into the Silver Line, and I’m pretty impressed. I know it was over budget, somew...
How Duke killed an LRT and what that means for transit in the US
Переглядів 20 тис.10 місяців тому
It's all about project financing - again 🤷 The Durham-Orange Light Rail is one of the more high-profile #transit failures in recent memory (or maybe not, depending on how much social interaction you get). The headlines were pretty dramatic, talking about how some poor transit agency (GoTriangle) spent $100m just for #Duke University to kill the whole thing… … which is partly true, but it obscur...

Where you get funding matters - especially for #infrastructure. Much shorter video this time, but the story was too relevant to this channel to not make a video about it. It's just one of many examples throughout history of how the details of #procurement (in this case financing) impact what infrastructure gets built, which in turn dictates economic destiny. And once again: this isn't to say th...
Uber for buses? What went wrong with “microtransit”
Переглядів 10 тис.11 місяців тому
On-demand transit doesn't make money - but maybe it’s not supposed to. For a few years in the mid 2010s, on-demand / flexible / demand-responsive / uber for buses / wow that's a lot of names / #microtransit seemed like the perfect solution to declining service and ridership across the US. No need for tough decisions on zoning or #urbanplanning - "Uber for buses" would make use of existing infra...
How to build transit: America’s forgotten streetcars can save us
Переглядів 21 тис.Рік тому
They can teach us a thing or two about funding. I've felt for a long time that America's historic #streetcars deserve more attention, especially when considering the current struggles to build adequate transit in the US and Canada. It's amazing how such comprehensive systems emerged on their own, largely driven by private actors who weren't receiving massive subsidies. Multiply that across pret...
Can buses replace domestic flights?

How trains can replace planes: What are air-rail alliances?
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
Think flying from London to New York then connecting smoothly onto a train into Philadelphia - basically airlines #codesharing with train operators. At its core, the concept calls for the seamless integration of air and rail so that each mode can be used for the most appropriate distance, especially using trains to replace #shorthaul / domestic flights. It's pretty clear that the status quo of ...

Chicago is the best
Inventing issues that aren’t really there. Should be focused on larger issues like getting rid of the expressways
Melbourne wannabes
Only one reason why Chicago is screwed; they have been run by a Democrat for decades on decades. Democrats will keep you poor while enriching themselves in office.
2 B is a lot of money. But it's nothing compared to the cost of constant road-maintainance, additional lanes needed for car traffic just to be less than bearable during rush hours.
You really need to do one about Lisbon’s Metro and Lisbon’s rail services as a whole… Porto’s metro is vastly superior to Lisbon’s… Lisbon is sold to the world as a progressive touristy city but, for me, as a native, it’s one of the most (if not the most) inefficient European capital cities in what comes to public transportation. Absolutely car centric… Take a look at how isolated some suburban areas north of the city are badly served by rail, or the way that the light rail/metro is disconnected between the city and the south of the river, or the way some major technological hubs like Taguspark, Lagoas Park or Quinta da Fonte are completely isolated in terms of rail… it’s badly fascinating…
15:34 - Thats not Porto! It's in Funchal!
ok so what?
This video totally makes the case as to why public transport totally sucks... Cars are just simply better, safer, faster, and more efficient for a to b living.
Woah I'm periodically reminded Portugal exists
Spoiler alert, Chicago is a hellhole.
Another reminder of how overmatched public entities are when negotiating with bankers.
living in Hamburg, where you basically dont need a car, because of the great rail&bus system, i appreciate public transport!
Never ridden a leap bus but did ride a Chariot van back when I worked In SF. Back in 2018 I was still with my ex girlfriend. She thought I was crazy, a broke guy can afford to ride a microtransit van. After Leap went bankrupt everyone tried to get the vehicles because they make a good RV.
"light rail" and its just a weird looking train
The fact that nobody on the borrower side bothered to do an excel with euribor rates down to zero showing what the rate to pay would be, honestly, is not believable. You can't be that incompetent.
1:40 The image on the left side of the screen is of a bus operated by Toronto's transit system, the TTC, with familiar red and white livery.
Interesting.
*just a note on political shenanigans: the junta is the mayor of one parish (I don't think this is the word, but they're a smaller subsection of a municipality), together, they form the câmara municipal, which governs a municipality. In the case of Porto Metropolitan area, we are talking about 17 municipalities, and 10x more parishes, each of them with their own junta. So yea, intermunicipal cooperation gets messy, especially if the mayors are from different parties and/or election year is coming soon Anyway, nice video, I learnt a lot of things about my own city. I'll be subbing!
Clearly, the EU just passes on the money from additional state debt of the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Portugal did not "clean up" the city's debt either, but just passed on that debt to the very same countries under a snow ball system called NextGenEU. There is no benefit for their citizens to pay for a tram line that is 2.000 km away from where they live. The Flying Moose intentionally miscalculates the public funding in skipping interest and the value of the land needed to operate a tram system. Moreover, it excludes the operational losses, as the users of any tram system can be sure to never have to cover its cost. Videos like these straw sand in the eyes of citizens of other big cities who then urge their elected representatives to finance tram lines and grab the money (and the interest) from citizens and tax payers far away.
that upper clahss new york accent is sooo out of place lol
D C. Metro is just the same, Bostons T also...
Most cities are like that... downtown bound....not crosstown... vertically or horizontally.
My abiding thought at the end of this sorry (and unbelievable) tale, is thank God I live in Europe - and, more specifically, just outside London!
on the recent rose line expansion the house colapse incident has happened again. It revels the issues with drilling inside a medieval city with centuries old buildings. They also keep delaying the expansion when they find archaeological findings. some metro stations decided to include the archaeological findings on site, with glass bottoms and vitrines.
Why don't they just raise the fares to what they need to build the projects, why would you need any additional sources of money then?
amazing great quality video 👍
Great video, I lived in Gaia for 9 years and used the Metro a lot, even if it didn't reached the area where I lived, but I would use it to get around the city center. There's just one small mistake: the bridge isn't called Dom Luiz but Luiz I. The reigning King it was named after didn't attend the inauguration, despite being invited, so thery removed the honorific Dom from the name of the bridge out of spite. But that's a common mistake that even people that lived in Porto all their lives make.
Only problem with the public transport is the people using it, but otherwise its pretty damn good.
You cite many cities in Germany that introduced light rail to give relief from the burden of daily commute by car. I live in a Counter-example. A couple of years back an informal coalition of striktly backwards looking parties, the FDP and the CDU, managed to get such a project denied by the public by spreading the most idiotic lies about costs and impact of building. And everybody knew it was just „don‘t take anything away from motorists“. Traffic-jams, polution, noise, accidents until today.
As usual. NIMBY, and more over - paupers NIMBY. Those who work, who create wealth, who values their time need highway connector. Those who sit still in his hut and consume wealth, not create it, want slow local tram, free bus to their min wage job in the opposite corner of town and do not fly out from their decaying hut - and they are much louder, because they do not spend their time to some nonsense like job. Ok, you got it, Chicago is finished now. White flight, economy collapse, total corruption, dead zone. Congrat.
How many football fields is 16 Ford F150’s?
Bordeaux is in the transition of having one but authorities are not very fans too …
This seems like a video directed at Americans.
I like trains
I studied in Karlsruhe, Germany and I loved being able to roam the city and connected towns in a timely manner, without the need of a car, thanks to the tram network. Recently, they managed to get a big chunk of the rails underground making more room for people in the shopping areas.
i love trains
Iowa was developed as a Chicago dependency. That is why there is no major city In Iowa; not needed. All things good came from Chicago.
In Ontario and Canada more generally long haul bussing actually competes with rail as well as planes because our national railway, Via Rail is so expensive and chronically late that a bus is often faster, cheaper, and more comfortable for routes like Toronto to Ottawa
Poor understanding of the English language
a middle finger to the United-States, nice.
Heya! I'd love to see a video on the São Paulo subway system, it'd be hella sick
It would be indeed 😎
For a video suggestion, you could look into the failure of Leeds and the hopeful future of Manchester, in the UK. I have lived in both and really see the importance of good public transit! Great videos, subscribed.
Glad you enjoyed! And I've seen quite a bit of coverage of both those cities - would love to cover them at some point :)
I have to assume MDP commissioned those demographics in order to run "young middle-class singles in your area"-style ads.
