Intel Core Ultra 9 285K - My benchmarks, my thoughts, lets talk
Not an official review of any kind, but I so happen to have had the 285K on me and these are my initial impressions, a week and a bit after launch.
This is a long one and it's unedited but has almost only graphs in it.
Should provide some info to someone somewhere :)

X870E boards are plentiful on the market, but there's one that stands out in terms of cost efficiency and that's the GIGABYTE X870E AORUS ELITE WiFi7. It costs less than many vanilla X870 boards, while featuring more, including dual USBv4 ports, supports up to three Gen5 M.2 drives simultaneously and DDR5 8200 to boot. It may not be as tricked out as some other boards, but for what it is at its...

Does anyone know if this motherboard is compatible with the Intel i7 14700 KF?
Yes it is
Comparisons with 9600X only? Just remove AMD from the lot if you want to compare Intel CPUs but if you do - it is all bull.. no 9700X, 9950X, 7800X3D etc???
Calm down mate.. If you don't like it move on. Go and start the channel where you will do all that great analysis. All the best 😇
@@TheOverclockerMagazine The purpose of your video is to make a wise decision to choose a cpu and you dismally failed on that aspect unless what you are doing is post anything that piqued your interest, YT watchers be damned.
Why do Intel bothered released this garbage anyway? I thought rocket lake’s launch was bad enough already
You do know you don't have to buy this right? Intel didn't release this to hurt your feelings.
Over priced for what you don't get like only having 6-Layer PCB and 60 amp power stages as the B650 elite Ax for under $299 was better except for the 15 year old audio.
Great CPU for someone who knows about tuning. Intel and AMD are pretty much tied right now....Just got my 9950X and with a very mild tune(PBO,DDR5 6400 CL30....GB6- 3555/24791 After tuning properly should hit 3600/26000 easy.
Good pointers you touched on this video especially about timings between different Ram speeds
I genuinely thought your review was incredible. Intel did not create this processor to beat other "gaming" processors, Intel created it to beat professional issues such as video editors, artists, 3D renderers, among others, adding to this the energy efficiency factor that could be infinitely better based on what they presented. It's far from being a bad processor, but it's not good either, it has its pros and cons. I always preferred the Intel platform because from my own experience, every Intel build I created worked smoothly, without stutters, but when I did 4 AMD builds, at least 2 were months of dealing with stutter until the bios was updated... Today I have a 5600x and a 3060ti, waiting for the next generation of the 9950x3d and the next ace up Intel's sleeve, which I believe will once again go head to head in several aspects of AMD.
What happens if you run gen 4 nvme's, does that still kill the lanes for the gpu ?
Yes, your GPU PCIe link speed will be reduced to X8 lanes. Three of the total four are wired to the CPU and if you populate any two of these, GPU link speed is reduced
Would have been great to compare this is a curve optimized Ryzen 9000 CPU. If you optimize a CPU, it needs to be compared to other optimized CPUs.
Shouldnt you be comparing it to the 14900k or is there a reason for using 14700k
The 14700K is the CPU I had on hand.
Giving AMD a run for their money. I'm going to buy one right now.
For productivity apps the CPU is very capable, despite only 24 cores. Power efficiency also seems much improved.
So you could make it boot 8200 2x16. I wonder if 8200 stable with 2x24 (easier on the IMC) is possible? Was it stable at 8000 (with expo or tweaking voltages etc?)
2*24 is on the QVL for 8200 and a number of 2*16 kits at 8000. The A die I used isn't meant for 8000, but could post it as you saw. If I wanted to run 8000, I'd bet on 2*24 over 2*16
@ QVL doesn’t really mean much, a lot of manufactures gives misleading numbers So many z790 boards for example claimed 8000mhz but those were complete lies Did you get around to testing if 8000 could pass something like yrcuncher vt3 or karhu
@@Frosty-dr8bs 8000 on AMD has been stable for a while, espeically since AGESA 1.2.0.2. Simple DDR5 8000 operation was one of the key updates for the AGESA. All the Mdie I tried on the board worked fine at 8000 XMP and 8200 for another Titanium kit I have. As for VST, I did not do hours of this as there was no reason to doubt it could since lesser boards from 600 series were already capable of this (B650E Aorus Elite X ICE for example). You can also check the QVL DRAM vendor side as well. For instance GSkill certified their DDR5 8000 on the X870E Aorus Master for both 2*16 Adie and 2*24Mdie. Memory OC on WiFi7 & Master is identical
@ that is good to know thank you
I really want the 265k...I only game in 4k.
Everyone should! You can run it in a van or tent with solar/battery power. Saves the planet. If you care you won't buy the 9800x3d.
Effect of CPU at 4K is diminished in favor of the GPU so there shouldn't be much difference between 265K, 285K or most other high end CPUs
I've got both a 265K and 285K. 100% get the 265K. The chip has better latency than the 285K by about 5ns. I got mine down to 63ns and I can't get below 67-68ns on my 285K. This has to do with the core arrangement. In games, I can't tell a difference. The 265K is a banger at productivity as well, getting well over 39K in CB23 when optimized and OC.
@@TalonsTech amazing to see people finally tuning their arrow lake cpus properly.. everybody else runs it on stock settings and crap on these cpus.
@@TalonsTech Crazy how a lot of these reviewers are sucking off the new X3D chips so hard right now when they still blow ass in Productivity task. Literally almost every review of the 9800X3D I've seen so far just mention gaming and the few honest reviewers show the Ultra beating the 9800X3D in Single and Multithread apps. Its like people forgot you can do other things with a PC besides game. 265k Is more then enough for me gaming at 4K.
285K is not worth buying for gaming and Intel locking out the average overclocker really hurts these chips. Awesome review and I'm glad I found your channel. Thank you UA-cam algo for recommending!!
Do all you do is game on PC?
@@thetheoryguy5544 For a workstation chip it is good for productivity but if you game and work on it. There are better options at a cheaper price.
just curious does this board have lighting behind the aorus logo on the IO top cover?
Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on how you feel about RGB lighting), it does not have lighting there.
Ive heard there is insanely slow start up times with these motherboards unless you enable something called ''memory context restore'' in bios, but many people are saying that is causing random blue screens and crashes. can you confirm? Sometimes as a streamer i need to restart and be back on stream within 1-2 minutes, so a 2 minute start time is bad for me lol. Someone suggested i with a gigabyte b650 aorus elite ax v2 instead.
Yes indeed initial bootup times can be long, but afterwards it's normal. Memory context restore does for sure reduce boot up times, but I can't speak to how it affects long term stability. Best bet I suppose is to enable it, but set a fail proof dram frequency, 5200 or lower. Should not he any dram instability at such a low frequency
This is a very good review and comparison video! I was impressed at the detailed overviews and the editing. Thank you.
im planning between corsair dominator titanium 2x16gb 7200 cl34 and this ram, This one costs almost 50 % more than corsair but its 2x24gb, is it wise to get this instead of corsair? im planning to pair with Strix z890-A and ultra 7 265k.
Do you need the additional 16GB of Memory? If not rather save your money and get the Corsair kit. That being said, the Kingston kit is exceptional and it runs 8600 C38 @1.45V (default) on Z890 without much effort. So I'd say get the Kingston if you plan on pushing your system well beyond DDR5 8000 but if not the 7200 C34 is great
Im just here for control
So we tune 'this and that' so it sucks less. Fine but that still doesn't make it a great processor. Compared to AMD it's in fact miles off from being great...
Are you sharing your general sentiments on the CPU or responding to what was said? Because if it's a response, understand that at no point did I say this is a great CPU in general. I presented a nuanced perspective based on the mumbers recorded. It is good in particular applications, and not up to scratch in gaming. Intel has made strides in power efficiency and productivity applications but has gone backwards in raw gaming performance. This can't be that tough to understand.
Best 285K review on the internet hands down

I'm thinking of this kit + MSI Carbon X870E + 9800X3D. Do you think it will just work? Or should I stick with 6000 (and maybe be twice the capacity)?
Well the 8000 kit can easily do 6400 CL30 so there's some flexibility there. But in all honesty just go with the Titanium 6400 kit
@@TheOverclockerMagazine Thanks! Buildzoid is saying there is some latency advantage (which helps with gaming) to running 2:1 mode with UCLK and FCLK synchronised, especially at 2000 MHz, it's just that you need a good motherboard for the 8000 to work. So yeah whichever kit I get I'll at least try 8000. I'm doing flight simulators so the CPU and memory performance is maybe a bit more critical than most games. It'll be fun to test, as long as I spend more time flying than tweaking settings.
Is this the one with the metal back plate attached to the pcb. On the back of the motherboard?
Nah there's no back plate here outside of the small addional plate for the primary PCIe slot
