Why Coleman agreed to an atmosphere of late 60s Miles Davis swing is a puzzle, but it serves insecure Metheny, while bringing to mind the strange 'Bird and Diz' 1950 effort featuring Buddy Rich.

If there is an album that is the high watermark of avant-garde, it’s this one. Musical equivalent of a painting by Salvador Dali, Fred paints a landscape where all the clocks have melted, logic has been transformed and was deliberately obscured by apparent chance. Listening to it, it is a dense sculpture, despite sometimes a few drooling digressions, highly worked out of polyrhythms and musical themes which are in accord with the absurd and playful poetry of this composer 🙊🦊

Just now discovered after doing some research on T Lavitz. This album is insane. Was a huge fan and saw his twice with the Dregs. A giant.

Absolutely one of the most inspired free jazz albums I've heard. Incredible that it's a trio.

I heard a later iteration of Curlew, I guess early 90s, I think Amy Denio was onboard. Remember Davey Williams brought out his tape measure. Tom Cora was still here. Fun on so many levels. Hearing this earlier grouping, I think Prime Time is an unavoidable influence, isn’t it?

In The Village Voice, Robert Christgau said Sonny Sharrock continues to develop as a gifted melodist with music that is "as accessible as good jazz-rock gets" despite some moments of "signature chaos". He gave Seize the Rainbow an "A" and deemed it "uncommonly beautiful and direct without flirting with the saccharine or the simplistic". And in his list for the Pazz & Jop critics poll, Christgau named it the tenth best album of the year

Can somebody please explain to me why this massive talent is not shown the level of reverence of say a John McLaughlin, Alan Holdsworth, Robert Fripp...?

National Health, Egg, Curved Air, early Strawbs, Hatfield & The North and Igginbottom were the best, but I love them all.

I picked up the debut National Health album on vinyl when it was issued but somehow missed this gem until now. Thank you intertubes!

I bought this on the strength of John & Ric's tenure in Soft Machine. I wasn't disappointed. I still have my treasured vinyl. They also appeared on the BBC2 music programme OGWT where they performed two numbers which unfortunately I can't recall. It's good to see John and Ric are still around.

Adventurous rock music from the punk era (meaning people proud that they could not play instruments and thought that spitting on the 'audience' was the ultimate musical statement - pfffleaseee!). I'm so glad there is diversity in human minds and hearts because that could have been the end of creativity and substance in music. For more music like this check out early Robert Wyatt, early Gong, Gilgamesh, Alan Gowen, Phil Miller, Hatfield and The North, Egg, Pichio Dal Pozzo, early Hugh Hopper, early and mid-70s Carla Bley, Kew Rhone album, Soft Machine, Camel, Caravan, early Aksak Maboul, Henry Cow, Bruford, etc. etc.

I could dedicate 20+ years getting reeeeally good at Sax, or just take a few minutes making noises with a balloon for the same effect.

Sadly unknown excellent album with fantastic musicianship and superb vocals. I mean, Ian Mosley alone...just amazing.
