Steven Banks: Fantasy on Recurring Daydreams (World Premiere) | Zhu Wang, piano
Fantasy on Recurring Daydreams
Commissioned by Young Concert Artists
Performed by Zhu Wang, piano
Live at the Morgan Library and Museum, NYC
Recorded by Skillman Music

Program Note:
I am generally fascinated with the natural processes of the mind. Of particular interest to me are the unusual and abstract images and stories that the freely associative mind creates in the space between wakeful consciousness and subconscious states. They have always struck me as being very musical.
As a composer, I often find myself daydreaming about musical ideas or ways that music might potentially connect with the world around me. These ideas usually come back day after day for months, or even years at a time. Most of the musical ideas in Fantasy on Recurring Daydreams have been rattling around in my mind for several years.
Fantasy on Recurring Daydreams is a musical sketch that depicts the process of slipping into a daydream, being swept away by an abstract subconscious journey, and awakening to the beauty of waking life that is right in front of us if we choose to see it.

Mozart Oboe Quartet in F Major - Steven Banks
I'm not a musician and can only marvel at the skill. I love this piece though and know it well. What strikes me is that the emotional narative seems different from the cello. It's not as raw and sad but smoother, more accepting of suffering. I'd love to see him interpret the Brahms cello sonatas on the sax.
The piano is too loud and too percussive. Maybe close down the lid, and throw a wool blanket over it? It would soften the noise coming out of it, and the saxophone would have a better time.
I'm a cello player (non-professional), but this performance just catched me and took me away from our unperfect world - and bring me into as if heavenly highests... Thank you so much, Maestro! God bless you more and more!
There are times when I could think it's an oboe. Superb playing on your soprano sax.
Such a rich and centered tone I love!
Where can I find this music??

Your music is so beautifull...
So beautiful, what an incredible performance! Steven, you're the man!
Thanks so much, Jacob :)
Ahh yes, my two favourite low reeds :D
I’ve listened to this 150+ times and I’m still awestruck. Best tenor tone I’ve heard and this piece is just so beautiful. Definitely an inspiration for all saxophonist.
And as you can see this is why the Bar Sx stays in jazz/marching bands & the Bs Clr stays in concert/symphonic bands.
As soon as I listened to your "As I Am" arrangement, I knew I had to listen to more, this was amazing 👏
Unpopular opinion: Bari sax sounds better than cello and can do it's repertoire more beautifully.
This is incredibly moving and one of my favorite pieces I have ever heard, but I have one problem with it: I can’t figure out how to stop listening to it…
HERMOSO. LLORABLE.
Great performance!! Congratulations!
Steven! I love you and miss you man! I'll never forget our time in school together. Keep working hard and playing your heart out. We're all so proud of you! Peaches the Panda <3
Beautiful
Dude rips. Please keep producing content!
Steven Banks is the total authority for classical baritone playing no questions
Both of Adolph’s sax’s inventions!
It's soooo good, I wanna play it on my clarinet 😂 - not a saxophonist
Your playing is amazing! Your tone is warm, the vibrato is perfection, and your phrasing is exquisite! Your performance was truly a delight to listen to! Bravo 👏 🔥🔥
magnifico concierto e interpretación. Congratulations
Baritone Saxophone And Bass Clarinet My Favorite Low Instruments
wonderful composition and performance 😀
Gorgeous!
Somehow it feels like two guys engaging in some hilarious banter haha. Brilliant performance!
I just saw you perform at the BSO this past week (infact, I sat in front of you during your Saturday night performance after the intermission). The saxophone is so underrepresented in this space, and you are a fantastic example for others to follow. I will follow you closely from here on out!
apparently you gave my band teacher an informal masterclass, now i can see why he says you’re so amazing 😭
Something about the way a Bari sounds in that upoer register is just so charming and sweet
O Concerto com a Filarmônica de Minas Gerais foi fabuloso! Congratulações!
Bravo Sire, beautiful tone.
My music teachers favorite person is you. Also he has the same saxaphone or however you spell it
the only reason i know you exist is beacause of music class.
Very nice...Beethoven!
Hey Steven! What happened to you on Instagram? Great piece btw
Thanks! And I just got rid of it to focus on other things!
Great piece!
Thank you! 🙏🏾

I have played the alto, tenor and baritone saxophones and am impressed by your tone!
