Audi TT MK2 wireless CarPlay with damaged amp and speaker replacement

A nice short video showing a simple repair / upgrade on this 2012 Audi TT MK2. The head unit had been replaced several years ago but it was time to bring it up to 2024 standards with the Sony XAV-AX6050 which supports wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. Once installed we turned our attention to the dead OEM amplifier and perished front door speakers, swapping them out for Audiotec Fisch...

Until now, the newer BMWs (G chassis) have presented a bit of an obstacle with regards to digital audio upgrades. Thankfully we now have a solution in the form of a 'break out' box that converts the ethernet digital signal into an SPDIF fibre optic output which can then go into any DSP to give a nice clean flat 2 channel digital input. Beyond the digital integration, this install really shows w...

Great speakers but ghetto looking grills. Literally ruined the look of the car. Should have used Morels instead (or get some aftermarket grilles).

Fun fact: that Kenwood is used by Singer in their "premium" sound system, which is a $9980 option. From what I can see RHD cars are a pita, as you have the engine ECU under the passanger seat. On LHD cars you can put a much bigger and much better DLS ACW10 sub in there.

Did you end up running a separate connection from the head unit to the door speakers (as opposed to them being routed from the tweeters originally)? If so, why did you do this? Does the sound going from the head unit to the door speakers directly drastically improve audio quality/equaliser?

@@udeshhhhhh yes I have!! A guy in Sydney runs a shop specialising in custom systems. Not cheap. Like $10k. But it’s a new three way system up front, new rear speakers, an 8 channel amp to power each separate driver, with another amp for two sealed 10” subs. All the amps are fully DSP controlled so they do time alignment and EQ. And then they also do sound dampening to stop rattles and vibrations etc.

All that money and all those shortcuts with details. The Bremen does fit if you want it do but it is overpriced and not particularly good. The entire Shadow/Spirit range is so difficult to improve beyond a certain level, I have four and have though of every possible option. Rolls-Royce made so much fuss about the upgraded systems when the Spirit II was introduced but they were never that good. Far better than the crap 10cm base model Pioneer speaker units in earlier cars but they never addressed the resonance of the aluminium doors. The sheer stupidity of that was the placement of the main driver could have been ideal as a damped enclosure as the structure us there. People assume that Rolls-Royce is the epitome of everything when in fact that's far from the truth.

Were you able to interface the original volume up and down switch with the new radio? If not, that might be a better location for the conductor. I was also thinking it would be really nice to motorize the radio cover. When the sound system is turned off the cover could motorize down on it's own and when you crank up the vehicle it would automatically raise. I would like to do that with my own vehicle since it has a radio cover, but I think all the components would have to be custom-built. I'm not aware of any aftermarket motorization kits.

Hello. Have you ever upgraded a Ford Mondeo MK4 2011? MK4 is from 2007 to 2014 and there are several years that ford used the same speakers. My car (titanium) with navigation has an incredibly sharp treble, something you cannot adjust away. What was Ford thinking? The treble sits inside a SHORT tube behind a plastic grille and the sound is reflected and creates a sharp and unpleasant sound. I have the slightly better door speaker with blue plastic and not paper. If you had bought a sound upgrade package from Ford with a bass box, it is still the same door speaker and treble!

I was also thinking the original tweeters could be left in place and simply not used. Then new tweeters could be installed perhaps in the A pillars underneath the factory upholstery to hide them. Firing forward into the windscreen.

  • @davelusted8845

because they had been butchered and stuck into the bottom of that housing. Also they had no grill and the owners kids had already stuck their fingers in the 4". In the future we may swap them for the Hertz MP28 as it will probably be coming back for a sub as well.

Not a fan of a professional shop using hot glue to secure tweeters. That’s the ghetto way of installing things. I’ve had several tweeters fall out of place over time due to shops using hot glue. Honestly, with the prices shops charge, they should be making custom brackets. It’s not that much work or cost to do it. That said, I have Audison speakers in my MK7 GTI. Voce’s in the front, Prima’s in the rear. The Voce’s are on a different level than the Prima’s, and the customer should have just forked up the extra $$ for them. My plan is to go Voce in the rear, and make everything active (it’s all passive right now) using a Helix DSP. If I won the lottery, I would go Audison Thesis in whatever new car I would buy lol, but man, the cost of those speakers for a 3-way in the front is insane!! 🫨

There is no aiming of the speakers to the listener. 3. Why didn’t make a complete face cover plate four the 3” mid driver to screw into to create a better sound? 4. 1. As per part 1 of this video, we did carry out some sound deadening to the doors, but the owner was very specific about the weight being added so we only added a minimal amount. 2. Yes this is a relatively entry level install with factory locations. Obviously we can go a lot further with pillar builds etc if required. 3. We used a 4" on the dash not a 3" 4. Its a 4 channel amp (10 channel DSP). The dash speakers are so close together they are being treated and tuned as if they are a single wideband speaker. They run on a passive crossover and the midbass speaker is then on its own channel.
