      Hello, Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! If you are referring to the cartridge filter, no it does not spin. If you are referring to the plastic item that visible in the bowl I think it’s meant to create somewhat of a whirlwind effect as the fuel goes through the filter to the clear bowl to help separate any sediment or other contaminants that do not get trapped in the filter. Here is what the description on Amazon says “Brand: Dtomi 4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars (7) Diesel Fuel Filter Oil Water Separator With Bolt Turbine Marine Boat Superior 60 GPH, 30 Micron, Replace# 500FG 500FH”. Hope that helps answer your question!

    I made same system last spring and was suprized on result. Finally i installed system as fixed arrangement on boat. Vacuum side is connected on fuel sump and return to the fuel return hose. So it flushes tank when run. First summer experiences are good. I have also valve to take fuel out in containers with that same pump.

    No need to get it up to temp first? To circulate through the muffler?

    • @ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks
      @ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks Місяць тому

      Hello, Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! Yes, it’s best to run the motor for a bit to ensure it reaches operating temperature and the Thermostat opens up.. I didn’t show it in the video but I did run several containers of eco friendly Antifreeze through the motor prior to actually filming it, so I was confident the motor reached a safe operating temp. In addition to ensure that Antifreeze was in the engine block at about 6:50 into the video I filmed myself I opening a small drain that is tapped directly into the block and saw the antifreeze come out of it. That gave me peace of mind. If you plan to use a process similar to what I show in the video, I should think that filling the 5 gallon bucket twice to 3 times with water and circulating that through the engine prior to introducing the Antifreeze would be the best way to proceed. Of course, I am not a licensed marine diesel mechanic. Just a fellow sailor that happens to be mechanically inclined. Hope you find my long winded response to be helpful!!

    Thanks. Mine had a special short hand fixed spanner for the nut that came along with her. Luckily so, because I have no space for a long arm. She also came with an adjustable like you showed, initially, but was not too usefull (but it was old and slacky). I didn't manage to loosen the lock nut, but it was fairly easy to tighten them as a whole, so now it's dripping less again. I probably have a prop rotating the oposite way of yours as I tightened mine the way you loosened yours. I did mine on the water so I stopped when it was dripping less. According to various google answers it should drip some drops per minute when ideling. Thanks for sharing as you answered several of my Q's :-)

      Hello and Thanks for leaving a comment!!! Yes, she was on the hard when I replaced the stuffing box packing. I had previously thought about trying to do it while she was in the water. I watched a few videos of people that did, but they had much easier access to their boat’s stuffing box. In the end I am happy that I waited til she was on the hard since it was my 1st time. Now that I know what to expect, I am very confident that I could do it while she was in the water if necessary. Hope that helps!!

    • @gfimadcat
      @gfimadcat 3 місяці тому

      It is doable in the water if you have easy-ish access because when you pull the old stuffing out, plenty of water will come in. So it's essential you have everything prepared (new stuffing already cut to length, bilge pump is on, etc.) and then it's not a problem. As long as it all goes well, otherwise it *is* a problem :D In general though this kind of thing is best done out of the water, for everyone's peace of mind :D

      Hello 👋 thanks so much for watching the video and for leaving a comment!! I have a 1982 Island Trader 38’ Ketch Rig… She displaces about 26,400 lbs.. I did some research & 300 feet seemed to be the magic number. I went with 3/8 instead of 5/16 for the increased the weight which would help more when at anchor.. a bit after I had bought the chain, I started to think about the extra weight and if it might push my bow down.. i’m pretty confident my chain locker will handle it, but just in case it doesn’t &/or it pushes the bow down too much I can always trim some of the chain off.

    Beautiful boat. I have my eye on an Island Trader 38 right now. What's your experience with her in winds from 10 to 12 knots? I know there's concern about light air performance, but, I'm looking for insight into someone who actually sails one. Thanks.

      Hello 👋 Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! Please take a moment to subscribe if you haven’t already done so… I hear they don’t point well into the wind and yes light air performance is not good! I am still basically a newbie and I I haven’t really sailed her that much.. on a solo trip from Bay City to East Tawas I motor sailed here there and back in about 10 knot winds.. She certainly wasn’t built for speed. But she is still honestly Bad Ass!!! 😎!!! There is a Facebook group called “Friends of the Island Trader 37 & Magellan 36”. There are fellow sailors in the group with substantially more experience under their belt than me..

    OK. perhaps I could install a stuffing box seal. Do you know what make/model you have? And is the shaft 1 1/4" diameter?

    • @ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks
      @ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks Рік тому

      The stuffing box “packing” for my setup is flax infused square packing cord… I loosen a jam nut that’s holds a compression sleeve in place.. the compression sleeve is what creates some pressure on the packing cord iwhich in turn creates a seal on the prop shaft… There are three main components to my setup which is considered a traditional stuffing box: the stuffing box body, the compression sleeve, and a jam nut that locks the compression sleeve in place. You may be better keeping the drip less seal setup u have… I think to replace the dripless seal you may have to slide the prop shaft out a bit… Have you watched any videos on replacing a dripless seal or convert from dripless back to the traditional setup??? I can check the diameter of my prop shaft and let you know

      Hello, Happy Saturday!! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to send a question!! I am still very new to sailing so it’s hard for me to give you good review. I have seen this written about them.. Island Traders are known for their seaworthy nature, strength and comfort. This heavy displacement Bluewater sailing vessel was built for crossing oceans. Since she is a Ketch Rig she is easier to Solo Sail. Overall, I know she will be slow and not point into the wind very well…. But she was not built for speed.. she is built for comfort especially in somewhat heavy Seas 🌊 … overall she is definitely a Beautiful Boat. In episode #3 I Do a boat tour video…. I hope that helps.. Thanks again and please subscribe if you have not already.. Take care..
