i was a teen when this game first came out. it was BRUTALLY hard to get a respectable score. this guy is a master and makes it look easy.

Hi Paul, I was given the link to your vid re for helping with changing the difficulty level by Mike Hanson. Your vid has been really helpful, but as I have now the latest Mame, the settings for Defender compared to your are slightly different. But what I would really know is what 28 - Special Function is for, and also, when I change it, it sometimes or mostly changes to something completely different, like I might set it to 0, and when I check again it is at 3 or 10 or whatever, and Baiters are just flying at me on Attack wave 1. Have you any ideas, what it is for please, and why it does that, as all the other changes I make stay.

You're the best Stargate pilot I've ever seen~ I was 16 when this came out in 1983 & couldn't fly nearly this well.

The problem with emulator versions of this game IMHO is that there's nothing like the original hardware controls. Coordinating slapping that reverse button with moving the vertical stick up and down with precision ... What a rush! 😅

hello Paul and other defender/ Stargate players.We need a sequel to Stargate that incorporates the old characters and had the same feel. Maybe steal some blonds and brainiacs from Robotron and ,add a boss to fight Nothing to complicated., please no camels. Everything out there that came after including Williams Strikeforce in my opinoun stinks . I think what makes these games so good is that it is that they more fun the intended button joystick configuration. These games are almost unplayable without a up down stick , reverse etc.. I can't play the xbox/ Nintendo Stargate version on their controllers , mostly due to incorrect tiny buttons . Let's pool some money together and beg Eugene Jarvis or his grandkids to give us some propper upgrades ..It wouldn't have to be a full arcade build just something that would go into a pandora like arcade stick thing , any ideas?

When I start Defender, it goes straight to the service/test screen every time. How do I get it to go directly to the gameplay screen on start up? Thank you for showing me how to exit service mode. I am using MAME on retro pie.

I was just given a Stargate cabaret cabinet in mint condition for FREE by a gentleman I work with because he needed it out before he moved and he wanted it to go to a good place where it would be taken care of I was in all by him, giving it to me for free, couldn’t believe it.

It’s part of my memory since I was played the NES version of this game. That arcade game has never been in Taiwan as a Taiwanese! And now I am playing the arcade version on the MAME arcade emulator. Thanks for the playing! That’s a great play!

I'll say it again as I did 5 years ago when I found my original comment. This is still an incredible score regardless of where it was paused or not. It's not about testing endurance, it's about the amount of skill that goes into getting a score as big as you did. So wait, you're saying that there's a score bug similar to Defender and Stargate on Robotron?! My best on Robotron is only 20 million but I ended that game on purpose because I ran out of time. I also noticed in my previous comment from 5 years ago that my math was off. It's 1 hour per million instead of 30 minutes per million which makes sense. 100 hours was 100 million. It's been a long time since I had a 10-hour game of Stargate and put up a score for 9,999,975 as the top spot. Definitely in the early to mid 80s. After that it was only a few million here and there and then I would just put my initials. I had a couple of minutes to spare one day about a year ago and put up almost half a million on the one near me. Pretty much just to take over the top spot, but I definitely want to do a 10 million in the next month or so. So how many extra men and smart bombs do you think you had when you ended your game?

When that game came out there was long line waiting and a whole bunch of quarters on the game itself (that’s how us old people claimed our right to play next 😂) Thanks for the memories

I was a good Robotron player. Never a top player. I could get 10M on level 3 or 4 difficulty as I recall-25k extra life. I’m not sure maybe level 5. I tried higher settings but couldn’t get there. I really enjoy this game 2nd to Defender/Stargate it was my favorite arcade game. Joust was about my worst game. Sinistar was impossible for me as well.

That about my high score first ship @ default settings. In a arcade in 83 or 84. I think 84. These days I’m not sure how I’d do, certain I could get 100k with a few days practice. Very well done, you play great! Much respect. Took me years to get very good.

This reminds me of when I hung out with my younger brother at verious video game outlets/stores, and we played this game for hours. He would rack up a ton of extra ships/bombs, while I'd watch him tear through the on screen enemies. Bought a hand held/plug & play, but it's not quite the same, you need a solid base for all the physical forces exerted on the controls. I strapped it down,still, it's not the same.💪🏻😆👍🏻

Great stuff.. most I ever got was 200k on Defender and I think 220k on stargate. Love those games. Thinking about getting a stargate cab.

Really hard to hear your advice over the game (accent wasn't a problem at all) but just watching how you play helped a lot. I play the Genesis version though and everything you demonstrated here applies perfectly to that version as well. Just proof that it's a very faithful port! Thanks!
