Books? Books! We've got books here! See? Everybody cares!
Or at least I do, about sci-fi, classic sci-fi, fantasy, Can Lit, and horror. And guess what? No YA! It's all adult, all the time! And by "adult" I mean a 35+ quirky weirdo who talks about books. I laugh (a lot), I get too excited about xenoanthropology, ship problematic couples, and I sometimes make saucy (or stupid) jokes.
I read at least one bonkers classic sci-fi a month (and do Classic Sci-Fi Bingo!), review a lot of ARCs (mainly via NetGalley), and love self-published books and small presses!
If you love books and (especially) sci-fi, you've come to the right channel! I don't believe in doing tear-downs, and I always find something good to say about every book I read.
This is an LGBTQAI+ safe space, and I don't tolerate any hate speech.
(I do review select self-published books. If I don't respond to your email, consider it a decline.)
I'm also a judge in the SPSFC3 - Team Book Invasion.

The Fenris Device (1974) - Classic Sci-Fi Book Review
I read this book and had a similar opinion... maybe even a little less enthusiastic than you, I decided not to make a video because of my lack of enthusiasm... I agree the spiritual/philosophical aspects were way too on the nose and didactic to be pleasureable. And they weren't really Buddhist, but more like an eager student's interpretation of Buddhism... which would have been fine, if they were the subtext and not the _text_ text...(Also, for context, I am a Tibetan Buddhist monk...)
Thank you for checking out my review! I bet as a monk yourself it was more frustrating than anything, given, I would assume, based on what you said, the tenets or ideas probably weren't the most accurate?
@@SoundFuryBookReviews To be honest none of the ideas were _wrong_ wrong, they were just the most surface-level way you would interpret some of them. If they weren't presented so explicitly and bluntly, but had been subtext, had motivated his actions without us needing to be told about them, they would have been a lovely set of philosophical preoccupations and a happy way to live your life (or as happy as possible given the whole apocalypse situation😅). They actually were a lot of elements of the story I enjoyed, and I thought you highlighted many of them well, which I appreciate. I felt like any full length review I made would be filled with enough caveats to make it unconvincing. I forgot to mention, I appreciated your breakdown of post-apocalyptic fiction into the three categories. I read a collection earlier this year, _After: Nineteen Stories of Apocalypse and Dystopia_ edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, and while I read a decent amount of post-apocalyptic/dystopian books I don't usually read that many back-to-back, and it was definitely fun to see where each author fell on the scale between bleak and hopeful.
A solid review can send a story racing to a TBR, or it can help a reader dodge a bullet. Either way, a solid review is very, very worthwhile. You never disappoint!!!
I thought it was the weakest in the collection. The last protagonist really irritated so bad if just found myself skimming.
@@VINCENTDARKLY totally agree. That last section was brutal.
I remember Disco! OMG, a blast from the deep, deep past… I’ve not read many detective stories in my time. Donaldson’s “The Man Who…” series pops to mind, though it’s contemporary rather than SF>
A concise & useful review; appreciated.
@@Psittacus_erithacus thank you!
Hi Tina! Found your channel recently and so glad I did! I never hear people talk about Titan Shade. This is such a fun urban fantasy!
@@ianthereader I'm so surprised it's not more well known because it's so good!!

This is such a great review! You totally nailed it with the “taking a strange path and ending up on the coolest road” comparison, that is *precisely* the feeling this book gave me! Much love!! I’m subscribing :)
@@minnow311 aww thank you! 🥰
Hello Recently I have audited your channel. Your content is appreciable. But your video are not optimized that I seen using by valuable SEO tools. A channel should have SEO score 90+. or 80+. Good SEO score depends on proper optimizing title, description and video relavent tags and rank tags etc. Most of the SEO score is in under 20 in your video because your title, descriptions are not optimized properly and do not have more video relavent tags that's why your video views and subsciptions are very low. After SEO you will get more views and subscriptions organically. If you need any help about SEO (Search Engin Optimization) I will contuct with you on facebook or other social media and I will send you youtube video SEO report. Best Regards to you. Thank you.
Interesting story. Sounds like something that I have never read. Would I like it? I don't know. This was a neat review. Thank you :)
haha yes DC is a city (not very big by comparison to other major cities and treated like more than a city but less than a state. think of it like a tiny province) but it does have homes where lots of the politicians live.
Thank you! I could have googled that i suppose LOL
Perhaps unsurprisingly I tend more towards “bang, and get it over with,” than your culmination scene! 😅 So cannot help, with the recs you were asking after 😚 PS - your episode audio has dropped in volume recently? I have to add 10dB on my amp otherwise you are whisper quiet compared to other episodes that I watch around you. HTH!?!
@@TuftyMcTavish Yeah something happened to my microphone but I didn't notice until I started editing. The next ones should be back to normal!
This book sounds FUN!!! I haven't read Sci-Fi in a while, I wouldn't have ever found it. Thank you!!!!!!

My favorite part of the book is how they needed to get to the city by… tomorrow. Hahahaha and then ALL of the book happens with time skips and everything. It’s like an entire dnd campaign crammed into one long rest!
@@somefishhere that was so much fun! The second book is coming out early December 😁
I hope you like Ludluda! I enjoyed Gogmagog.
So many cool recommendations here!!! I love your $10 Walmart wig - it lets us all see how lovely you will still be 40 years from now!!!! This was such a fun and enjoyable video, I really must back it up and watch it again!!! Wishing you a wonderful holiday!!!!
@@rodgilley-writer omg thanks Rod! Happy Halloween to you too!
@@SoundFuryBookReviews I'd love to chat, honestly, but I must go back and watch this video a third time!
Blimey, I *do* still remember seeing “Ginger Snaps” when it came out! Also “The Others” and “Dog Soldiers” too! That was way back in my regular movie days, though I’ve fallen off that these days. Can confirm I have experienced a fair few orbits around the sun 😉 Oddly enough I was being introduced to “House of Leaves” via the Rammel Broadcasting channel just prior to watching this episode. He did a *great* episode on BookTube about that book, which I’d never heard of before. My favourite horrors are “Hellraiser”, “Event Horizon” and “Prince of Darkness”.
@@TuftyMcTavish Event Horizon is a great movie! It also helped me at science trivia one time 🤣
@ I wonder if that nugget is already part of the Sound & Fury Channel Lore, but if not I hope it sees an opportunity to be rolled out again 🤓
I would love to see an "if-you-like" video that's all post-apocalyptic! (Be sure to mention yours!) I just watched Fallout and wondered what you think of it?
Oh geez I could totally do that! I enjoyed the show but I still like the games way more. I thought it did a good job with the set designs and the overall vibe, but it took me awhile to really root for the characters. How about you?
@@SoundFuryBookReviews I actually loved Fallout! I agree, though, that at the beginning, I'd ask myself, why should I care about this character? I consider it a good entrance to the post-apocalyptic genre for someone who wasn't too familiar with it. I also liked that it was a little more sci-fi than others with high-tech stuff, and I really like the retro qualities.
I’m not a Barker-bud either. But I am here for the tangents as always 😂
@@TuftyMcTavish I appreciate that! 🥰
Hey, I’ve read this too! I too preferred it to the first, and was delighted when I suddenly recalled that we’d already met Ailo in the first book when she was a small kid.
I wanted to know about Failure Island more than anything. I was glad to have answers. I don’t want to post spoilers.
"Hi, I noticed your UA-cam videos are not getting the views they deserve. Views are too low. You need to fix some issues. If you want I can provide a free audit report to identify the issues. Just let me know!"
🏆 New competition season, let’s gooooooo! I picked up a few of yours from last year. I am always ready for more 🤗
Great book a surprise
yaay on winning a physical copy
I like that you pay attention when you’re reading, whereas I often forget who such-and-such is within the same chapter 😆 I often need a bit of slow pace and extra detail to reinforce who characters are, before they waft away in my head. Quite often I’ll be reading, thinking to myself, “I don’t recall who you are, but hopefully I’ll pick it up again via context.” This probably doesn’t reflect well upon me 🤭
❤❤
💣 I too drop f-bombs on the regular, but you did surprise me on this episode while making your point! 😆 I recall struggling with “Annihilation” so this may not be for me 🧐
@@TuftyMcTavish haha yeah in "real life" I swear all the time 🤣
Your video is very beautiful. But I see many problems in your channel. If you want, I can share with you
Oh, no! I loved _Absolution._ I didn't think of it as a prequel... VanderMeer was never interested in a linear chronology. I put out a review for the original trilogy last month (because I did re-read it immediately before reading the new one), and my review for this is filmed but won't come out until closer to publication date... But, yeah, I really enjoyed it. Including the last section, which was remarkably jarring, yes, but re-contextualized literally everything we had been told since _Annihilation._ My experience talking about this series online has been most people don't enjoy _Authority,_ since it was such a wildly different narrative style than _Annihilation,_ and it was much more of a political or espionage thriller. Since the second section of this book, about 50% of the page count, was in a similar style I anticipate this addition to the series will be polarizing... but that seems to be the very part that kept you hooked! I do agree this wasn't necessary, I was happy with the trilogy, but I am glad VanderMeer went back, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think what really jumped out for me upon this re-read of the original is that each of the first three books uses a different literary tone or narrative device.... first-person journal entries, close third-person espionage thriller, a mixture of all three persons over multiple POVs that cover multiple competing timelines and geographies... He kept that up with this one, especially with the first and third sections being totally different from anything else down before in the series, and the second section being comparable to _Authority_ yet still had a different tone... The skill to employ all these varying tones and techniques to create a coherent whole was really impressive and immersive to me.
@@arockinsamsara Totally fair!! Thank you for this - I'll definitely think about what you said. I still gave the book 4/5 stars on Goodreads so definitely not a disliked read (minus part 3 lol). It's just easier to talk longer about critique than praise (when you want to avoid spoilers at least)! 🥰
@@SoundFuryBookReviews Being completely honest, I totally get people not loving this newest trip into Area X, even fans of the original. It is going to largely depend on what kind of "answers" you expect from the series, what you're hoping to get from the trip. The third section of this book is jarring, and it is a _little_ strange that it makes up the last words in the series (in terms of tone/narrative device... I think the events depicted in this last section are the perfect events to be the final events depicted in the series). I'm glad you enjoyed the story overall, needed or not. It sounds silly but it might be that part of the reason I enjoyed this section was because I had huge anticipation for it, and that is from the Table of Contents. The chapter headings in this section are wild. I just glanced at the ToC as I was starting, and already in the second section there are weird chapter titles that are written backwards (Gnitsohg Eht) so when I saw that the very first chapter/sub-section title listed under the third part was _1 = F*ck That Chicken_ it felt like centipedes crawling around in my brain to figure out what the heck was going on, so I spent the first 70% of the book anticipating this section. I don't know if that prepared me for it or if I just psyched myself up for it, but whatever happened, once I saw what it was and what was happening, I was down. (That character is insufferable, though. But this isn't his first appearance in the story, and he has always been insufferable).
I’m in the latter category of parental unit relationships! Loving the ☎️ side-story even though I strive to avoid ever having to use the infernal contraption. I may not be the best audience for this story 😄 but it was fun to watch your own revelation in real-time there 🙂
@@TuftyMcTavish Ugh me too. It was hard to read for that reason as times 😞
I loved this trilogy! I didn't expect to find any kind of review I figured it was too obscure. It's probably weird to be into a romance between a spiderman (lol vrix) but I thought Ketahn and Ivy were such a sweet couple, and I love they aren't all angsty. Thanks for your review.
I thought these books were so much fun. :)
Your video content is very nice. But your video is not reaching the audience due to some problem. If you want we can discuss your channel issues? Please inbox me
oh you can TOTALLY tell when the author is throwing shade at someone, especially a specific generation. Solid review!

My goodness! I just saw this. Thank you for meeting this book where it lives. You are an ideal reader for this collection. ❤
Wow! I don't think this has happened before. At about the 60 second mark of this video, you sent this book soaring to my TBR !!!! Well Done!!!!
Ooo, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Luminous Dead” when I read it earlier this year, but it’s often not too popukar. It felt very claustrophobic. I loved the atmosphere. My BotM for September ended up being “Every Star a Grave” by Jay Posey. I’m hoping to read the sequel in October, but I already have too much on my October TBR via Readalongs, carryovers and such. PS - I recently scored a copy of “A Tidy Armageddon” which you tweaked my interest in a while back.
@@TuftyMcTavish I've read two of her other books so I'm pretty excited about it! I hope you enjoy it!
