The Atelier Series Carves a Special Niche in the JRPG Genre
Spanning 25 mainline games divided into 7 sub series and 17 spinoff games the Atelier series became much bigger than its creator, Shinichi Yoshiike had ever dreamed when he entered Gust with his design document for Atelier Marie: Alchemist of Salburg. 27 years later and Shinichi Yoshiike, composer Daisuke Achiwa, and producer Tadanobu Inoue are still creating games in this is unique alchemy driven JRPG series.
With recent game titles in the Atelier Sophie and Atelier Ryza stories Gust's Atelier series has been gaining extraordinary sales and notice from the RPG community. In this video I briefly cover the entire series from Atelier Marie: Alchemist of Salburg to Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Liberator of Polar Night.

Tetsuya Nomura and the Kingdom Hearts team worked with developer Jupiter to create one of the most innovative and well-received action RPGs on the Nintendo DS platform in 2007 in Japan and 2008 worldwide. That game was known as Subarashiku Kono Sekai or It's a Wonderful World in Japan. But in the west this game was called The World Ends With You. Fourteen years later, the game's successor NEO: ...
Wizardry's Incredible Legacy and Influence on RPGs

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord had a nice run in the west with 8 games between 1981 and 1996, but Japan took the Wizardry IP and created more than 4 times the content made in the west between 1991 and 2022. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Megami Tensei were all greatly influenced by Wizardry. Traces of Wizardry references are found in many other popular Japanese media too. In th...

I absolutely recommend Atelier Resleriana as a starting point! With the caveat that you understand you will be playing a F2P, Mobile Gacha Game. Since it's free to play, it's a super easy way to get the feel of the story/characters of these games. While I've bought Ryza/Ayesha (trilogies of both were over $100 even on sale) thanks to my introduction of these characters in Resleriana, I have still not managed to get too far into either. I imagine as I become more familiar with the tone and feel of Resleriana I'll be ready to tackle these games once again and experience a full-fledged, 3D offering sooner rather then later. I'm also really, really in love with the Resleriana unique characters such as Resna, Valeria, and Izana!

There is one game I can think of that is directly inspired by Sweet Home. It's called Abaddon: Princess of the Decay. The main difference is that it has some NSFW elements, but the gameplay is 'very' similar to SH. Otherwise, you just don't see games like this, with party management/horror setting/mechanics, which is a shame. There were some horror-themed games in Japan, like Laplace no Ma and it's sequels, but they seem few and far between there too.

You have a nice sounding voice for this! But the pace is so fast I feel lost trying to comprehend what you are saying before you move on (I.e. “this game brought back popular character Pamela to the series”, I don’t know who she is or why she’s popular, but that’s all she gets). It’s possible that this video is aimed at people who are already fans or are familiar with the series with whom this fast pace is not a problem-I just wanted to give my feedback as a random click from UA-cam’s algorithm recommendations. Good luck!

Thank you for watching! Just a friendly warning to anybody looking to purchase a game in this series -- the Switch physical versions of many of these games are very unreasonably priced right now for whatever reason. Definitely do some price shopping -- you shouldn't be paying $70+ for ANY game that's been out for more than a year! They do run sales on Steam for these games a few times a year, and the trilogy bundles are generally the best deals if you're okay with purchasing in bulk.

Falcom's biggest strength is that they maintain a development cycle that manages to create a good game each year. Their only issue is that their games are very niche. With so few people, they manage a good plot/story, good gameplay, good OST, good presentation, and decent graphics. I think they should sell more than they do, they deserve it.

I'm a Ys fan before getting into trails, I loved Ys games because their godsend osts that make me think: if they can make ys music so great, maybe I should try their other flagship franchise, and then everything is history. Falcom made me their slave, buying their every game no matter is ys, trails or xanadu...and I also start to buy both jp and eng version of the games because first I have 0 patience of wait for localization, and second, want to have another copy of English version to experience again in another language. As for trails, this is the closest thing to a long-running Shonen anime series I got to play and felt the immersion of the world. In trails you can find all kinds of battle Shonen anime/manga tropes: fans arguing about who is the strongest, power level doesn't make sense, fan service, nobody dies in story, plot holes, etc. I say like this not because I dislike these traits,I LOVE Shonen anime tropes, I love one piece, naruto, bleach, dragon ball, jojo, these old school ones, and trails gave me literally everything. and a lot of them I saw it from a anime show I loved, a grandiose world like one piece, certain plot points in naruto(notably, Rean's obssesion with Crow or Joshua/Estelle/Loewe relationship), structure in jojo(each parts got a new group of main characters with old characters show up to play important roles). what else I need? I'm going to follow falcom until the end of earth....I decided...

Wizardry wasn't actually the first such game. The great achievement of Wizardry was 1) to port this kind of game from computers that only universities could afford to computers that normal people had at home (specifically the Apple II), and 2) to make it fit into two floppy disks. Wizardry was a clone of _Oubliette_, a 1977 game for the PLATO computer system of the University of Illinois. Oubliette was visually very similar to Wizardry and had a similar dungeon structure with 10 levels, but it had far more character classes and no main quest.

One thing that is interesting is how many games of basically the same vein as Wizardry/M&M don't do well as indies on steam. I was looking it up on game-stats and even the re-releases of Wizardry games (e.g. 6/7/8) outperform modern tiles like Amberland. I wonder how much of it is brand recognition versus a dislike of people diverging from the classics

Another popular series that was influenced by Wizardry is the King's Field series by none other than FromSoftware! For those that don't know, Kings Field was the first series made by FromSoftware, even before Armored Core (which pre-Souls era these two series would be the 'bread and butter' of the company). So for those of you that like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, you have Wizardry to thank for that as well.

I've been reading the English localization of Blade & Bastard, and its a pretty good fantasy series. Unlike some adaptations, it doesn't require you to know anything about the source material. It also remains faithful to the feeling of the source material without being slavish in presenting the details. It doesn't use game/lit-rpg elements (stat screens, hp, etc). It is a serious fantasy world setting that just happens to have Wizardry elements and mechanics, like the spells being Wizardry spells, the dungeon, or how the church can (sometimes) bring dead adventurers back to life for a fee.
