Hmm true, The Welsh Marshes Line is the closest thing but as covered, still goes through - and ends up - in England. Is physical geography not the reason for this lack of a main north-south arterial railways? Lot's of hills and mountains in Wales.

In a recently published study, the Welsh Assembly/Welsh Government declared that it would cost £2.8Bn to reconstruct the two lines that would join North and South Wales, a conveniently exorbitant sum of money which entirely justifies their decision to not bother. This is a similar type of lame logic as using "the Environment" to get University Professors who don't even live in Wales to justify stopping any further road improvements to link the North and South. Face it folks, the people who run Wales just don't want the people of North Wales to know how much Government money is spent in the South, because after all, that's where the votes that keep them in their positions of power are........

I'm a local and they are building a train station and a shopping/ utilities complex there , starting next year 🥺 so sad I love the walks there feel so lucky it's on my door step and now it's going to be ruined

If you take in to account all the Welsh heritage & narrow gauge ,railways ,wales is more connected than it appears . It wouldn’t take much to link many of them up & add some new or reinstate some old ones . Proper steam powered trains of course .🚂

Well, there used to be North-South until the mid 1960s. We need the Menai Bridge - Afon Wen & Aberystwyth - Carmarthen routes back. They will return, but hope it's sooner than later.
