PRO doesn't mean what it used to
Переглядів 689 місяців тому
Jack and John discuss the use of the word PRO in so many educational videos and content, teaching things that are helpful yes, but not necessarily always right or should be taken as gospel just because it comes from a PRO. Our view is that we should learn the technical aspects yes, but then move to the creative and artistic aspects of photography for richer experience of our chosen activity.

Jack and John Updates and Thoughts on Thinking in Photography
Merry Christmas Guys! One suggestion for next year, if you do a gear episode next year do it in Oct or Nov so we can give out our wish list ahead of Christmas
Merry Christmas guys! Happy New Year. Thank you both for all you do!
Thanks to make me know David Cobb and the story about South Korea.
Shame this has so few views and no comments. I know Michael from NPN (Gosh 2000?) and his work was always in inspiration.
Hi Prashant. I agree. Michael is a wonderful guy and his work is amazing. I wish more people knew of him. Thanks for listening!
Dave Kelly made me aware about midtone contrast with TK9. I didn't see your video John, but I will. Always nice to listen to quiet people, quiet talks...especially for a Swiss guy as me. 😉
Thank you for watching Pascal. Good you know about the midtones...Dave does a nice job. I appreciated your quiet comment as I try to keep things low key in my videos and just be pleasant throughout.
Good discussion, guys! I frequently hear your voices in my head: slow down. And this was very important for me with using the polarizer in the rain. I'm not used to having the CPL on and I forgot about it several times until it became part of my routine. Jack, I still use the 3M cloths; I find them much better than the bulk packages - just don't ever add softener to the wash!
Thanks Tom! Glad that the reminders still resonate with you. The original 3M cloths were great but also very expensive for what they were. Bulk packs you can find some good absorbent ones.
Love all these
Thanks for watching Michael. We're glad you enjoyed this and the others.
We just spent a couple of weeks up there and visited a number of the same locations. Were you able to shoot the comet?
Glad you got to enjoy this beautiful area! We were there for the big moon which lit up the night sky and we didn't see the comet. Did you? Thanks for watching
@ We did capture several nice images of the comet near Whitney. As for the big moon, we were at Mono Lake but clouds got in the way. I enjoyed your recap.
@@napavalleyimages Outstanding! Glad you caught it. Cheers
It was nice to meet you both at breakfast in Bishop. Looks and sounds like you had a great workshop and offered a lot of variety. I can relate to your comment about the wind, cold, and altitude. I definitely felt it, also. I just returned today and drove 2100 miles, just short of your mileage. It was a wonderful trip.
Great meeting you too Chris! I'm glad you had a good trip there! Thanks for saying hi!
Nice to hear you again. I'm the subject and I simplified my life by keeping relations with best people, creativity and that's it. To take the time to breath. Isn't it the privilege of the age to realise that? When John talked about his second epiphany, it makes me think about the photowalk I started to do recently. One camera, one lens in my hand and just react to what happens. The images will not be awesome but will tell a story about me that day. My feelings, maybe the pain in my body or still a poem, who knows. Sailing in this part of the world must be a great experience for sure. Thanks guys.
Love this. I would say, maybe naively, becoming who you are, is really and truly a journey (akin to a long walk that never ends) with twists and turns and surprises. As Colleen says "It's not a point on a map". Thank you all for an extraordinary discussion!
Thanks for watching and commenting Paul. Yes, it is a journey and if we want, the journey never ends, there is no finish line. Continual growth and evolution can be ours. Love talking with these two, just incredible folks!
Hi guys, love your interviews on creativity with your guests. I was expecting to see and hear on this critique talk, about what inspired you to take the photos, instead of the skill side of the image. Maybe the creative side of photography has been the current evolution of the channel? Anyway, loving the current interviews with Guy Tal and Collen Minuik. I really enjoy your thoughts, questions and interaction as well. FYI I loved the chain image, the first one in the above series. It reminded me of a grandfather and a grandchild (old and new) because of the contrast in the chains condition and the symbolism of "link" maybe you did not think about this, but sometimes I take photos subconsciously, and then later on the symbolism and emotion comes to me.
Hi Loretta. Thanks for watching and the comment. After doing thousands of image critiques during our workshops, we've found that it works best to talk about the skill side of an image, because after all, we're critiquing the image. Commenting on "why" someone took a photograph...as you know we all are moved in different ways and the motivations behind it are extremely personal. Good comment though that we could add a bit more of "why I took the photograph". We may do more of that in upcoming episodes. Thank you so much for being a part of the channel!
Great conversation. Colleen's book is fantastic and very inspiring. Guy's, I greatly look forward to and expect superb things, as usual from him.
Thanks Cody! Really appreciate your comment and watching the interview. Two amazing people!
If you want to be a landscape photographer it's maybe more difficult than to be a photographer. I'm living center Europe near the Alps, but most of my photography are made 15 min. drive from home. You're right, we just have to open our eyes and free ourselves from judgments and enjoy the process. Always nice to see my good friend Alister and both of you. Thanks.
Thanks for this very nice video. I’m a big fan of Andy’s work and it was a pleasure to learn a bit more about him. On the subject of people bringing to much gear on expeditions, I think you should take into account the fact that for most people, a trip to Lofoten, Patagonia, Namibia, etc … is a one in a lifetime experience. And with that in mind, you really don’t want to miss an opportunity for a great shot. So yes, I tend to bring with me enough gear to cover every focal length from 15mm to 200mm (even 600 mm at times), plus a drone and it is very cumbersome, but I’d rather do that than arriving at a scene and realising that I can’t get the photo I’m inspired to take because I wanted a lighter bag.
The fire fall discussion is spot on. It is sad how locations can be loved to death. As someone who has spent most of my life in the Sierra hiking, fishing and making images I also do not share locations of images that are not taken in iconic locations. Thanks for the discussion with Art!
Thanks for watching and the comment Doug. It's sad that we can't have nice things anymore and just love everything to death. Glad you enjoyed the episode!
Thanks for having me with you!
Good stuff! Merry Christmas guys. Stay safe. Looking forward to a great 2024.
Merry Christmas guys! Looking forward to seeing next year!
I've watched a few Guy Tal interviews over the years, but he was most definitely on fire for this one. Really thought provoking subjects and fantastic articulations. Well done gentlemen.
I made several notes for following up on the ideas discussed in this video. We're left with a challenge to find our own authentic selves. What a wonderful adventure life can be. Thanks for Guy Tal and the "We Talk" hosts.
Wonderful discussion by some very dedicated and talented instructors.. Enjoyed every aspect of the discussion of some great topics. Great!
Great interview!! Guy is always inspiring and a favorite artist of our resident photographer Hannah - we are VERY eagerly awaiting the new book!! 💗👏🏻
Thank you for this interesting conversation! I hope that David will be in Europe in one of the next years for a workshop😍
Thanks for watching! I'll pass along the encouragement to David to visit Europe!
Wonderful session. Three interesting guys talking. Thanks for presenting this for us to share.
Recently on Expressive photography forum(Alister Ben) we discussed about creativity and intentionality in our photography. The point of view of Guy Tal was really interesting and go beyond photography. It talks also about the creativity in our own life. The reference on Rainer Maria Rilke was pertinent. Thanks to the three of you.
thank you Pascal for watching and commenting! I agree, much of of what Guy expresses goes far beyond photography and delves deep in to the human condition and psyche. Besides gaining insight in to ourselves as humans, it can also enlighten our photography to a large degree. Guy is one amazing person with how he views and shares the world.
Thank you. Jack, you are the one with the largest mic but the worst sound 😀
Thanks for your open and thoughtful discussion about creativity, really enjoyed it.
Thanks Jason. We are glad you enjoyed it. Our feeling is that there is not enough discussion about creativity and we enjoy the chance to dive in to this topic.
Thanks for the tips Jack and John. These sessions are so helpful, thanks for spending the time and making the effort.
Excellent tutorial, was reminded of some things as well. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words David. Glad you enjoyed the episode. We appreciate you watching and glad that you got some reminders from it.
Reinforces the theme of the quote attached. I think this sums up a lot of what you guys teach. Thanks for the discussion and taking the time to share your art and philosophy. See ya. ‘Perfection is achieved, Not when there nothing more to add, But when there is nothing more to remove.’ Quote attributed to: Antoine De Saint-Exupery
Great quote. it does reflect a lot of our philosophy. Thanks for the words Dennis!
Thank you for the analysis of the air photo image and how it can enhance your ability to see better (landscape) images. I need to practice more.
Thanks for the comment Tom! I'm glad that you found that helpful. I'm really on a mission to talk about designing artful compositions and how to go about doing it. As the old saying goes, you don't "take" a photograph, you "make" it. I try to use all the parts and pieces in a scene and arrange the comp to be the most appealing. Thanks for watching!
