Beside the regular bus and coach videos, we occasionally feature other vehicles. This is my Land Rover Series 2A from 1962. Another project ... this is a 1962 Land Rover Series 2A (mostly) - with a Series 3 bulkhead and front panels. This has a petrol engine. It's fitted with Range Rover axles, which means disk brakes (so it will stop), but seems to retain low ratio differentials. Some parts ar...

It is cold day today
It certainly is.
That cab is an ergonomic disaster.
It is, at least by modern standards - it is! And yet everything falls oddly to hand (except, perhaps, the wipers switches…). As commented elsewhere, driving it is it’s a bit like playing a large instrument in a band; once you’ve learned what everything does, it’s fine. Much more room than some vehicles, too.
@@richardwalker_ It is interesting the variations one could find. I remember Edinburgh Atlanteans had the gear selector on a pedestal , not on the steering column. Later GGPTE ones had the selector on the right. I rather like the old Leyland half cabs with the square speedo with black on white.
@christopherhunter2892 Yes, and even between batches there were some detail differences. The Leyland square speedometer and square dials were a work of art, very art deco (considering the limited number of people that would see them!).
My instructor many years ago said assume everyone else is incompetent. Well he used stronger language than that but family friendly channel etc.....😆
Indeed - treat it like no/one else is aware (or words to that effect!).
I was 22yo, an Infantry soldier in the NZ Army serving in Malaysia when that vehicle was produced. The Army at that time had a large fleet of various long and short bodied Land Rovers and Bedford 4x4 trucks, all petrol powered.
That’s amazing. I’ve had land rovers for many years now, always a handy utility vehicle. There’s another statistic that something like three quarters of all those ever built are still serviceable. I’ll pop in some progress updates with this in now and again as an occasional midweek extra.
Great video - thank you! Any chance of doing a similar one on my childhood favourite - a Bristol RELH? Preferably semi-automatic on air suspension.....if possible!
Glad you enjoyed that. I know of several RELLs locally… and a couple have featured briefly being driven. Not many RELHs nearby though unfortunately - will see what comes along!
@richardwalker_ Thanks Richard - I'll look at the RELL videos mentioned!
There’s also a short video of the EATM RELH somewhere in the historic videos. I’ve not yet done any walkaround or cab explanation for either (but RELL and RELH cabs are very similar) - but there’s something else for the future…
Hello Richard Walker
Hello 👋🏻
Great video, thank you.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’ll focus on some of the exhibits individually and in more detail, later in the year.
I love video's like this. It explains alot of things. I bet I'm not the only one who used to watch the driver and try to figure out what was happening!
I remember sitting at the front as a young teenager trying to work out what was going on! It's a bit like playing a large musical instrument, with the amount of different things going on in harmony, but where the left hand is doing something different from the right... if you liked this, look up my video with the pedal view or the alternate cab view where you can see what is happening from different angles. Glad you enjoyed it; I'll try and do some more explanation videos as/when time allows.
You're definitely not the only one!
I was the same. Went to school on various old buses and coaches which I just loved. One was an Atlantean similar to that shown and I remember being fascinated by the gear changes. Even the sound of the cab door being shut brings back so many memories. I have many classic cars at the moment but can’t get the idea of owning an old coach from the 70s out of my head! The sounds and smells are so evocative!
It’s that social history part of things that I really enjoy; we’re immediately taken back to a scene from many years ago. There’s plenty of vehicles about and ownership can be very rewarding; but beware about storage (availability and cost) if you’re planning to buy - purchase is the easy part!
@@davidw8759 You're right - especially about the smells! My claim to fame (which I've yet to actually test!) - is that blindfolded I could tell if a 1960's/70's coach body was built by Plaxton, Duple or ECW - by their distinctive interior smells alone!
Time for a new B11R
Would be nice, but the one we have has hardly done any work. This and the older coach are more suited to schools work.
@richardwalker_ do you do any Euro 6 work
@@James-zs3cn Very rarely - RL15RSL sometimes goes into London. I've taken it twice in 2 years into the LEZ. Most of the work is schools, private hires and group organised trips.
Very nice and such a smooth bus. I believe this uses the same legendary Volvo diesel fitted to FH12 (d12d?). Thanks for sharing this trip, lovely scenery👍
I’m glad you enjoyed watching the Suffolk countryside go by; you can see the seasons changing across the different videos. Lovely coach this one; I do enjoy a Volvo.
Good morning Richard. When i drove service cars many years ago, some passengers would suggest to me, that it must be difficult to drive a large coach. To which my stock answer was, ' It's just like sitting in an armchair at home with a steering wheel in front of me", especially when we got new Volvo's for the first time, replacing Hino's, and older mid engined Bedfords, which struggled to maintain speed on the hills.
Yes - it's like sitting in your favourite chair. I always remember the first trip out in a coach when I was learning to drive (a Volvo B58 Irizar), everything seemed huge; and yet, after a couple of days everything suddenly became second nature. You're right about Bedfords - can detect a hill before they start to climb it; at one of the places I used to work we had some old Ford R1114 coaches that were even less powerful - in them seemed to be changing gear forever, even on the flat!
@@richardwalker_I once guided a party of Norwegian tourists on a tour of Yorkshire - and the only coach company I found who were prepared to climb the long twisting 1in 4 ascent of Sutton Bank used a Ford......I began to have doubts about it's abilities earlier on the tour when climbing a much less steep hill.....and by the time we eventually made it to the top of the 'Bank' - at less than walking speed - with engine screaming and the smell of overheating filling the interior, the poor driver suggested I take the Norwegians on a lengthy walking tour of the area whilst the old Ford cooled down. I always remember one of the group remarking: "Next time you should buy a Volvo!"
@ Something of a marathon for a Ford, Sutton Bank! I remember we used to have a group hire holiday back in the 1970s, and the regular vehicle was a Ford (DCA20S) - one year it overheated at the top of a hill in Scotland, another time broke a half shaft on the hill out of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. I later I got to drive a couple or three of them, and realised what hard work it was maintaining any sort of speed, even in the relative flatlands of East Anglia!
Aw Wow Richard Amazing Video About Going From Ringshall To Little Finborough On Volvo Plaxton I Like It
Glad you enjoyed it.
Aw Wow Nice Video About Always Expect The Unexpected On The Leyland Atlantean Bus Richard
Always expect the unexpected!
Gorgeous bus, and what a wonderful sounding engine! As a kid we used to go to Ipswich regularly to stock car racing at Foxhall. I can remember seeing these in action, plus the last of the trollybuses. Must have been 1962/3.
It does sound particularly good, this one. Was only saying the other day that the current Scania double deckers are a direct fifth generation replacement for the first motorbuses (replacing Tridents, and before them Atlanteans, and before them Regent Vs, before them the Regent IIIs which replaced the trolleybuses).
Just a silly question but, that last switch you pressed at the end of the video after shutting the bus down, that big hissss sound, is that to dump all the air out of the tanks?
Yes, it drops the air from the doors, so they can be pulled closed.
A fun route, thanks Richard for taking us all virtually aboard and making these videos, really enjoyable. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.🎄🎁🎄🎁🎄🎁🎇🎆
Very glad you’re enjoying them. Happy New Year.
Duplicate with a roof on for those who want to be up top but not get wet!
For the les hardy souls! Andy was mopping the seats on the OT every time too!
@@richardwalker_ I can imagine!
Another superb video, thank you! It’s a privilege watching you drive with such respect both for the classic bus and other road users. If everyone drove like you there’d be far fewer accidents! I really will have to get down to Ipswich from the wilds of Norfolk next year, maybe drive my Herald down.
Many thanks, and glad you’re enjoying it. Would be good to see you next season - the Museum opens again around Easter 2025, with some changes to the exhibits for the new year.
Great video loved watching it and others you've done great to see the buses out that I still remember as town service buses many years ago and them still going strong
Thanks - Glad you're enjoying the channel. Most of the preserved vehicles here are either from the Ipswich Transport Museum or Colne Estuary Preserved Buses collections - I also film modern buses and coaches in the mix. There's a bit of a back catalogue of videos to search through now.
Hi Richard, heres wishing you a belated seasons greetings from NZ. Bob.
Thank you, and all the best for 2025.
I went to school on this very bus in the late eighties, for some reason seem to remember a lot of the registrations of the hedingham buses.
That one is still about, too, albeit sold on now. Odd what sticks in the mind. The first coach I owned was one I used to go to school on, many years before.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas 🎄

Yes it is - it was speculatively for sale a few months ago, but still his. Usual parking space is beside mine.
@@richardwalker_ Nice
i got one of there ticketer's
Nice - have you got it working?
@@richardwalker_yeah, but I don’t have a driver log in unfortunately
I've seen the phrase "positioning journey" before. Am i right in saying its driving from your depot to where youre needed?
Yes, same as “travelling light to…” but maybe a bit more descriptive. Moving a vehicle from its base to where it needs to begin service. I rarely film with passengers on board - sometimes at the museum but not usually in commercial service (even though it’s public realm and allowed, it saves any issues).
@richardwalker_ I like it just as much without passengers on board. The B12 is very smooth. Thanks for sharing👍, I'm becoming quite the bus nerd😆
You get to see quite a lot of the countryside this way, as we can take any reasonable route, which can vary depending on the time of day. (That’s how we all started!).
Hello
Hello 👋🏻
nice noisy handbrake
What a lovely sound and such a relaxed driving position the Atlanteans had. Great driving too, obviously a consummate professional! Really a joy to watch
Yes, plenty of room and everything (at least, the bits that Leyland did) is in the right place. The wiper switches that Roe positioned above your head is a bit odd though! Thanks for the kind words too.
I remember as a youngster visiting the ipswich library most Saturdays. Late 1960s, early 70s. Eastern counties had a bus stop right outside and almost every vehicle was an LFS, FLF, MW or SC4LK. Drivers used to get the bus just moving then a loud grating as they fought with the gears, sometimes for so long that the bus was again almost at a standstill! They were so primitive compared to even the oldest Corporation bus. And they were usually much scruffier and poorly cared for into the bargain!
I can just remember the Lodekkas on the Felixstowe service. Reading this doesn’t make me feel so bad at missing the occasional gear! You’re correct that, up until the VR and RE, Bristol products were agricultural by comparison with AEC and others, such as the Atlantean which had been about for many years.
Speedo inop
Correct. Mileage on hub.
I love a wet day, so an awesome video. And Ipswich always seems to traffic free in your videos!
Thanks. It was a Sunday, but also a home football day, so we avoided that part of town. Ipswich has its fair share of traffic, especially if something has happened in connection with the Orwell Bridge.
@@richardwalker_ Yes indeed, that's one thing that prevents me from moving back, I need to escape the traffic in London but Ipswich will not be how it was back in the day
@ It’s definitely changed, some good, some bad, like everywhere - and the town centre isn’t what it once was… but you don’t have to go far from town and it’s still as it’s always been.
@@richardwalker_ Nice. One day soon I hope.
which part of the world pl.?
This is Ipswich, Suffolk UK. About an hour from London in East Anglia.
My son is 5 and has autism and he loves watching your videos. Thankyou!
Excellent. Has he been to a transport museum?
@@richardwalker_ he hasn't. We are in Leeds and he found you on UA-cam
@ so glad he’s enjoying it. There must be somewhere near you that you could go; I’m sure you’d be made welcome and he would feel right at home. We all have a particular interest - and that’s how museums thrive.
Hi Richard, thanks for the video. first one I've seen tbh. why doesn't anyone pay, i haven't seen anyone flash a card etc. Cheers luke
Is a preserved bus operating a free bus service, likely due to the MOT status/lack of O licence they probably couldn't charge
Good question! These are free services from the Ipswich Transport Museum. The Museum doesn’t have an operator’s license, so the only way that the vehicles can be used is by offering free services.
this must be a old video be the Museum is temporary cloes lol
One week old, it was filmed at the final event of the season.
@richardwalker_ though so
FROM
I wonder is the old tape player still in the bus.
There’s a bus to base radio fitted still. In a video I have recorded but not yet published there’s a proper look round the cab of this one.
Have driven this awesome bus doing the tour of Ipswich and driving it over the Orwell bridge for Ipswich buses was an absolute pleasure to drive an open top bus. Plus also used to have to use a cassette tape as we went round te Ipswich loop.
MRT9P has a speaker system of some sort fitted. 6 is the closed top sister vehicle, still very similar.
Hi Richard, really enjoying these Atlantean videos. Just wondered if yours or any Atlantean have power steering?
This one has Autosteer, which was also retrofitted to other types - it’s lightly power assisted (and can be a bit notchy), with any assistance barely there if stationary or moving slowly!
@@richardwalker_ Ah ok Richard, cheers. Is Autosteer like a brand name of power steering?
@@martynharrison8099Yes, it’s an aftermarket addition. When well-maintained it’s not too bad, but a bit of a compromise. They can get quite notchy or tend to amplify feedback, which can make for an “interesting”, vague drive - or sometimes require unexpected corrections to be made.
@@richardwalker_ Thanks Richard. Look forward to more videos. Have a great Christmas 👍
Thank you - and merry Christmas.
Hello Richard Walker
Hello 👋🏻
Hello
Hello 👋🏻
Awesome video! Despite my 39 years experience as a bus driver I can't imagine that I could ever handle one of these, looks hard work compared to a Regent V!
Thanks. You mentioned that you were interested in some Lodekka content! Compared to almost everything else on the market at the time, this must have been so outdated, underpowered and awkward, in every respect. I’m sure there’s a knack to it, which I will master. This was about being able to even get my left leg clear of the clutch and steering wheel!
That brought it all back to me - I passed my manual psv on a 5-speed Lodekka and have no idea how I managed it! My attempts with other Bristols with the same box since have been little better - they must have been hard work in service. I still envy you the opportunity though, and enjoyed the video.
I took my test in a Volvo B58 with RTT in luxury, whilst this was the Eastern Counties training vehicle! I definitely need more practice. And I agree - it’s very agricultural when compared with some much older vehicles.
Hi Richard nice to see a Bristol FS on your channel can we have a video of this in the daylight and how did you manage with the Gears and do you have any tips for me.
Yes, I’m sure there will be some more of this in the new year. We were just at the end of the day, and it needed to be moved…. I do need more practice; need to get more speed off before 4-3 and 3-2. My tip is: if you have long legs, have the seat low, and be brave!
not as refined as a AEC.... bit more agricultural!!
Very agricultural - and dislikes an incline. More practice required!
Congrats on 750! I'd love thr chance to get to drive something like this one day
Thanks - just over a year with regular uploads. Yes, do, if you get the chance. It’s “interesting”! I always had difficulty getting the seat right in a Lodekka. Only the second one I’ve driven though, and the other was a while back and only for a mile, so still a bit to get used to here, especially the 4-3 change. Too much speed and too many revs I expect was my problem.
Abraço de Portugal! Também sou Motorista de Autocarros Expressos, esses autocarros são uma relíquia.
