The British Establishment & Cover Up - Justin Welby, Empire & Power | Piers Cross
The British Establishment & Cover Up - Justin Welby, Empire & Power | Piers Cross
Why does the British establishment seem so addicted to cover up?
In 2024 alone we have seen the Post Office, Mohammed al Fayed, Justin Welby and the Church involved in cover-ups.
Why do we cover up so much in the UK?
Today I explore some of the historical cover ups in British history from the Boer War to the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya and the British cover up in India during partition.
I also talk about the psychology of why we cover up.
And I link it to power and money.
I draw upon the work of Caroline Elkins and the Legacy of Violence, Prof Joy Schaverien and Boarding School Syndrome, CG Jung and Oliver Bullough's Butler to The World.
Take care,
Piers

i cant remember which naz1 said this quote but it went something like this: The british are the best propagandist in the world because they brutalized the world but everyone still thinks theyre gentlemen. I think the British ruling class is addicted to cover ups because they don't want to pay reparations to everyone. Also, they don't just coverup their own atrocities but theyll invent atrocities in other countries which is just projection! The USA is probably even worse these days. I would recommend following journalist Richard Medhurst to learn more about current Anglo-Imperialism news from an anti-war angle. Anyway, I really appreciate what you do. Keep it up, thank you!

Thanks so much Piers. Do you think it might be related to the legal advice being provided? I’m not excusing or condoning harm, I’m just attempting to find the mechanism involved. It’s not only a British thing. Us Americans did the same perhaps due to the idea of “exceptionalism”

Hi @pmfg875, thanks for your question. I am sure that they will be guided by the legal advice. As the Sutton Report showed about 70% of UK lawyers were privately educated so maybe the same cover up exists. Take care, Piers

As well as the cover up another cornerstone of the British establishment is that there are special rules for how some people are allowed to operate. This happened in my family with my grandmother who was a very spoilt woman and would sometimes say the most tremendously hurtful things and had a real skill for making people feel bad about who they were (what I would called the Miss Haversham syndrome. Miss Haversham was the old woman in Great Expectations who was left at the altar as a young bride and became a lonely and bitter and vindictive old woman still wearing her bridal gown) In terms of my grandmother no-one was really allowed to challenge her on what she said and if anyone got upset and answered her back then they were the ones who were in the wrong. She was an expert in turning herself around from being the bully into making out she was the victim. Then she got demented and it became a case of - well can't you see she's demented. She can't help it. So it exists on a micro family level. But it also exists on a national level with certain people in society too - most clearly with some aristocratic ex boarding school people who think they should live by their own rules and not take any notice of grubby working class police officers (as they would see it). The film the riot club about the appalling behaviour of some upper income university students at Oxford/Cambridge illustrates this well. David Cameron was part of such a club. Not all rich ex boarders are like this I hasten to add. Some by human standards are highly decent and admirable individuals. But some are. These ones are a group with "special rules" as are certain members of the clergy, some politicians and the leaders of the tabloid/gutter press. They think there are different rules for them and this cocktails with their right as they would see it to cover things up. And if they are tabloid journalists and media barons they think it gives them the right to spread vindictive rumours with their dire newspapers. Like a delinquent bully spreading rumours about people in the school playground. Other Western Societies like the USA and Australia also have big problems and in groups and out groups of their own. But they don't quite have that uniquely British system of elitism, snobbery, decay and special rules.

Well they do call them sociopath factories. The ones who don't become like that are usually the crushed types who become ultra submissives and even become flying monkeys for the sociopaths. Some, if they are not that way inclined, can be cured of it through therapy. Large charities employ ex boarders and I think a higher proportion than in most places. Also, the media does. When I volunteered for a large charity, we were timetabled on work trips so unless you stole time away you wouldn't be able to check into the hotel until after 11 pm even though you had arrived in the middle of the day. If I had known about boarding school syndrome, then I would have understood where this had come from and been more resistant to this. On my first work trip, we were barked at to start working immediately after arriving. There was some food there and I had been travelling for over three hours so I sat down immediately, ate two sandwiches and ignored the barked orders.

    • @lemsip207

On other work trips I refused to be timetabled so much so I walked out of anything that had ran over time.

Many thanks Piers, there are some good insights here into the issue of cover up. The whole issue of duty of care, and who that duty is to, seems incredibly relevant in this day and age. The recent scandal in the church of England reminded me of an incident on a Christian summer camp I helped out on (not run by Iwerne Trust, but a similar organisation) where something unfortunate happened and the immediate response seemed to be rally round and protect the staff member involved, rather than making sure the children weren't unduly traumatised by the incident. I knew at the time this response was wrong but never really had the courage or wherewithal to speak out about it.

Much of the issue of Welby’s responsibility has revolved around the question: “What did Welby know? And when did he know it?” I think this is a much more nuanced and difficult question to answer than might appear at first. When I was at boarding school in the late 50s/early 60s and there was a huge embargo against “sneaking”, telling a parent or teacher about what had happened to you that was unfair, especially if you’d been a victim of bullying. It extended to talking to your parents about anything bad that happened at school, and indeed the badness of the whole experience. A culture of silence prevailed. The Iwerne camps were absolutely a boarding school culture. So the idea that JW, a regular participant in the Iwerne camps, would necessarily have known about what John Smyth was doing is not true. Those who were being abused would not have “sneaked“, they might well not have talked about it to anybody. And yet people display incredulity about this possibility. They were obviously not at boarding school. It must also true that having been at boarding school affected Welby’s capacity to deal with safeguarding concerns. I recall an occasion when I was just nine years old, having arrived back for my second term at boarding school. I was sitting at the meal table next to a 12 or 13-year-old prefect. I suddenly felt overwhelmed by the bleak horror of being back in that place, and started to cry. The prefect looked at me, laughed and mocked me for my quivering lip. For a long time I have remembered this, thinking of it as a cruel act. But more recently, I’ve come to understand it as an act of socialisation; he was letting me know that you can’t allow your tender feelings to be shown. It was necessary to put on a hard face in order to get through. If boys saw someone else crying, they would be reminded of their own homesickness. This could not be tolerated, because nothing could be done about it. In this way, we learned to be scornful and contemptuous of the weak, the one unable to control his feelings, the one who could not toe the line and play the game. Welby clearly was not able to deal very well with abuse survivors in his 10 year archbishop. He repeatedly talked about his horror and upset at how survivors had been treated and the need for the church to learn lessons. His actions did not match his words. What if his deeply learned intolerance of weakness was simply showing its head? Lessons learned over a long period of time at a tender age tend to take very deep root in us. He simply couldn’t do what he needed, and perhaps wanted, to do with regard to abuse survivors.

I absolutely commend you for bringing this awful, criminal behaviour to a wider audience. I have points. (I have full QTS - Grammar School teaching. Acting Head of Department) 1 - Wellby may have been the product of his education and also that Eton in those days was incredibly harsh. 2 - That does not in any way resolve him of his responsibility in that elevated position to not be a free and critical thinker. We are not responsible for our abuse but we are responsible for sorting out the damage. That is incredibly unfair but that is something we need to do. 3 - Wellby would not have been liked in secondary because he would just have been seen as odd. A yes man. Easily manipulated by far cooler and more intelligent heads than his. In a way, he really was the perfect storm. Was that fair on him? Possibly not but some children will grow up not to be monsters but to protect the monsters. The ‘useful idiots’ 4 - When Wellby was the ‘dorm guy’ he WAS an adult. We cannot excuse this. On any circumstances what so ever because it lets him off the hook. If we do then the pattern continues. No one is left to serious account. You cannot abrogate your own childhood trauma into abusing others when you are an adult. I’m now concerned Wellby will be let off the hook. Just like Carey was. If we logically extend that argument then let Smythe off the hook because he would have gone through something similar. Undoubtedly so. I say this with full QTS status. It is precisely because of cases like Ball and Smyth that every single boarder is now placed on the ‘at risk register’ which has been a legal requirement for the last 14 years at least.

I am not saying anyone is perfect or that Justin Welby is a bad individual but he along with a cardre of individuals occupy a priviledged place in our national discourse. This is located at the evangelical/managerial intersection. In retrospect the worst combination. One can see parallels with Paula Vennels to se what this combination of fervent self belief and managerialsim was doing in the Post Office scandal. I didn't go to a public or bording school but I am of the view there was a lot of bullying, sexual behaviour and abuse in varying combinations of emotional and physical harm. This is well portrayed in fiction, of course (Roald Dahl and the film If...) but we have strong suspiciion it is (was) in fact widespread. And power in British society is largeley exercised by people who have gone through public schooling. I am interested in why Justin Welby covered it up, failed to act but am also interested in what boys in publlic schools were experiencing and why in an evangelical context these beatings were seen as appropriate at all. There is almost a Faustian pact that the abuse you experince is part of the creation of solidarity that is seen as you go on to occupy the higher echelons of power in British socity (Church Conservative Party, Post Office Universities, Civil Service etc). Not unique to the Church of England as is well known. Other examples of similar failings in other churches across the world. If ever we were in the dark about abuse we do now understand it better than at any time in history. Our illusions are taken away. In the public sphere I would like to see the outlawing of extreme religious practices such as conversion therapy and the outlawing of physical abuse on children (otherwise refrred to as smacking). We aren't going to get anywhere while such abises are permitted. In the spiritual sphere I think there is a need for a new Reformation with institutional and spiritual aspects. Institutional = independent safeguarding bodies in the Church with lay majorities and expert memberships; spiritual = working out why the spirituality of the chirch beccomes a nexus for abuse and how to move beyond this. A large part of this should be listening to the experience of people who have gone through abusive experiences.

I had some concrete thoughts about nappies and ointments. The use of both for treating open wounds and soft tissue injuries (severe bruising) also had a purpose of preventing secondary infection, leading to high temperatures and being overall unwell, this preventative method then reduced the chance of doctors visits for the assaulted. Nappies also provided paddling to reduce wincing from pain when sitting. They however could not remove all signs, including a young healthy male walking differently and their school trousers fitting differently. To plan and action sourcing adult nappies pre internet and then apply “first-aid kindly” displays competence. The golden key to freedom for her family was provided in 1982 by a person of integrity.

Music at school was an expression I found. As a fourth former I recall sixth formers vying for having the biggest and loudest speakers. They'd play The Power by Snap or Baby I don't Care by Transvision Vamp. I guess it was the instant hit those songs delivered. Full blast the sound would come from different rooms. By the time I was a sixth former I was playing Elton and George Michael. I can remember one guy thumbing through my collection pointing out that my favoured artists were all gay. So what I thought. The fourth formers I was dormitory monitor for would play Metallica, Slayer, ACDC. Not sure which band (Google will enlighten me) it was but the one lyric from those 'heavy metal' bands that sticks in my mind is Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter. Perhaps not a great message to be whizzing around young boys minds. I may take a listen to Nirvana. All of those bands I associated with being disruptive, naughty. Will tap and see where it takes me. Thank you Piers.

Simple. He's not saved he didn't serve the Lord he served man. It's not rocket science. He preferred like what happened in Jesus time. Men preferred long robes and the praise of men to being right with God and following Jesus teachings. . Church of England as an organisation does not serve the Lord but themselves. Money pomp regalia is there but not compassion truth honour and following Jesus. You had to be born again repent of being a sinner and ask Jesus and the Holy Spirit into your life. To make the changes within a souls heart it's called walking with the Lord. Welby did not.

Not just at St Peter's, Seaford. Welby went to Eton in 1969 at the end of the rule of the flogging head, Anyhony Chevenix-Trench, also suspected of child sexual abuse, as his flogging history resounded through every boarding school he ever taught at, in the great tradition continued by Symth. AC-T's penchant was extracurricular activities with individual 14 yos.

Interesting but not convinced. IMO, Welby resigned because of his old fashioned Establishment morality: the coverup took place in 1982, a decade before he even became a priest. In fact, it's the legal profession that had more to lose from Smyth's exposure than the CofE - he was a judge & QC. Also, Welby's school, Eton, like Winchester where some victims came from, is not a standard public school - totally different ethos. Some of the victims were also at Uni, but Cambridge also seems to have dodged responsibility for some reason.

That totally misrepresents the survivours whilst equally letting Wellby off the hook. Wellby is an indescribably useful idiot who had the critical thinking skills of a gnat. Wellby was used by people above him. He very probably did not understand: 1 - How stupid he was 2 - Who is above him 3 - That self reflection is key It will be interesting to see what happens next because I strongly suspect there will be yet another attempt to just simply brush this under the carpet and the omerta will fall again. Thank you for this video and thank you for sharing your experiences. That must have been tough but the pressure needs to be kept on and stays on because of Smythe, Ball and countless other child sex abusers who will be in post right now. Safe guarding my a**e.

@theastral1909 Welby is a marginal figure in the Smyth case. Only HM King is above Archbishop of Canterbury in UK constitution. It was time for him to resign, but mainly because of his ineffectual response to Covid/Lockdown. There is much we don't know about Smyth. IMO he was motivated primarily by power & status - something the reports largely miss. His connection to CofE was tenuous: his religious loyalty was to a broader Evangelicalism. He was not a "cradle Anglican": like many he joined CofE to rise in status & left when they refused him ordination, joining another church. Many questions about Smyth's real enablers remain.

@ I agree with all of this. We tend to focus on the details of the crime but miss the real motivator which is control and power. Oh yes I am sure there will be more revelations about Smyth.

Wow. You’re the first YT native Brit I’ve heard recognize that the British hierarchical culture itself supports and teaches survivors not to speak up. Here’s a broader view from one outside the system. Speaking up is simply “not your place.” You are taught to “know your place.” If you’re not a lord, not a high cleric, not an authority figure and you do speak up, you’re being “cheeky,” rude, disrespectful, impertinent. All are threats to the system of British hierarchy. From there it’s a small step to you’re lying, you’re making something of nothing, you’re crazy-all in defense of the existing order. Same dynamic has happened in the US but within hierarchical structures whether that of a church or in some oligarchy. For the most part once the matter gets to the courts, the hammer comes down. Your key issue in Great Britain is that your courts are part of the hierarchy. The horrific Postmaster Scandal reflects that. What your government and courts supported over decades and put those people through is unconscionable, despicable, no excuse. Their suicides are upon your entire “know your place” system. If that system is cracking now, well good. It’s the 21st century, not the 16th.

This resonates with me even though I attended state schools. When I was 12, almost 13, we moved house 30 miles away, so I changed schools. I wasn't only leaving my friends behind but also my interests as they were devalued in my new school. For example, attending ballroom, Latin, and ballet dance classes with my old friends. I couldn't find dancing classes where I had moved to but tagged along with classmates to Girl Guides, but a year later, they left the local group, leaving me behind. I was told by one 'friend' that 'everyone' laughed at me for dancing. It turned out that 'friend' was turning the others against me. My parents could see that at the time but I couldn't so they banned me from seeing that 'friend'. She couldn't handle rejection, so she bullied me at school, so eventually I went back to her secretly seeing her behind my parents' back to stop the bullying I also loved drawing too which I did from real life, books, and imaginations, but that was devalued, too. I loved sewing too but went from making dolls' clothes to clothes for myself. When girls entered their teens, there was pressure on them to only like boys, romance, pop music, clothes, and make-up or, on the other hand, turn to religion. I liked outdoor activities, so I pursued them through extracurricular clubs at school. I did tag along to church with a classmate for a year as I was bored on Sundays with so many of my friends attending church. My mother didn't discourage this but grudgingly tolerated it, hoping I would get bored with it, and I did. It was fun for a year with socials and the music in services, but I didn't want to fully commit myself to it, so I decided to leave. In the Salvation Army, after a while, you have to become a junior soldier, sign pledges, and wear a uniform, which I wasn't prepared to do. It was the equivalent of baptism or confirmation in other denominations. My parents, on the other hand, had urged me to find my own interests and to stick to them, not chop and change along with my friends who were doing that a lot. They encouraged those activities I had got into before moving. My mother told me once that I should find my interests first and my friends second, not the other way round, and I still go by that. There is this attitude that you have to pursue certain hobbies and interests according to your age or year at school, not because of what you actually prefer. This what gets pushed in magazines and TV programmes aimed at children and teenagers.

@babsskett2757 I agree totally. Recently some concrete thoughts have come to me about Mrs Smyth treating the boys with ointment and giving them adult nappies. She had to buy ointments and adult nappies, pre internet days. She couldn’t viably access them free through the NHS. This took a lot of planning and actioning . Treating open wounds with antiseptic ointment to prevent secondary infection and coverage of the wounds with soft clean disposable nappies. Bad infections make people sick, high temperatures and need for doctors etc. The nappies also provided cushioning on the open wounds and bruised flesh. This in turn prevented some of the issues with movement etc. It still did not totally have the assaulted victims, young healthy people walking around as normal. School uniforms fit a particular way, bought with a bit of growth room. To have a bit fat backside and a bit of an odd walk could not go unnoticed in an environment where on is regularly wearing the same clothes. In 1982- Mrs Smyth was given the keys to freedom by the person of integrity who reported her husband. There was a way out.

But, it's still not right or good to cover up things that are not evrn just wrong, but absolutely EVIL!!! The person who covers up Evil is as bad in one sense for 'allowing' the Evil people to carry on doing what they are or hv been doing. Two wrongs never made a right, as the saying goes.

Thank you, 🙏 especially, for the concept of being tied into repeating mistakes. We see women marry abusers and children get abused again and again. One Buddhist version of rebirth is the opportunity to get out of destructive repeat patterns in ones’ own lifetime. Wonder what Justin Welby has learnt this week.

Welby and others have said that they were informed that the police had been informed about Smythe, and so they felt it was out of their hands. I find this hard to believe. They could not have failed to notice that no news of Smith being arrested or put on trial had occurred.

Smyth was put on trial in Zimbabwe in 1990s. The question noone asks is about Smyth's connections in the legal profession. As a judge & barrister, he was much more involved in the Law than the Church.

Thank you so much for these insights. Observations #1 thru #4 and maybe #5 as well help to explain the ongoing refusal of Mormon leaders to address known CA among LDS line leaders and membership. The church turns such matters over to its lawyers-- who of course are guided by Duty of Care morality.

Hello Piers- it’s good that you are doing. Just discovered your channel yesterday. I’m posting a comment here as a way of sharing information following watching your older video on trying to give oneself a bit of head space away from heavy news that many of us get stuck into. I read how others enjoy movies like Railway Children. I can add audio books or reading young adult fiction like Philip Pulman. Libraries have free apps. Also a brilliant funny and serious guy- Blindboy Podcast. He also was part of The Rubber Bandits. - older stuff on UA-cam. English men- might take a while to get into Blindboy- but honestly I think those commenting on Piers- it will be something that will be interesting. Last thing, I hear all the shut down stuff and the impact on all. I speak up, I have always done so- The follow up to that involves being described in a psychiatric report I needed to get following heavy duty workplace bullying as have issues with emotional regulation- that would be as I speak with the Doctor- not how I interact in everyday life.

If you sent your son to boarding school and you heard that there was a paedo there, you would remove your child, assuming you were in any way a responsible parent. Welby has clearly turned a blind eye for same reason. If the truth came out there would be an even greater exodus from the C of E. I was christened, raised and confirmed in the Cof E, but there is no way that today I would want any bishop laying his dirty hands on a child of mine in confirmation. I doubt it would be the Holy Spirit that would be imparted.

What is extraordinary is John Smyth’s name did not come up at IICSA. Welby represented the Church of England and was interviewed at the inquiry in 2018. To think he sat there knowing what he knew about Smyth and kept quiet. Well done to Ian Hislop for confronting Welby and telling him the truth when they met at the British Museum last week after Welby had resigned.
