Hey! I can see my may, good job you are doing. Proud of you always
Very insightful; thank you, Ngaruka. What happens if the cattle consume all the nutritious grass and the only grass left are the tall ones? Will the animals finally consume the long grass or will they choose to go without food? Secondly, how do i ensure that the livestock eat both nutritious and the long grass, especially when the grass is in one camp?
1. It all starts with the principle of knowing your resources: you need to have an inventory of your rangeland resources (your grass species composition). 2. You need to monitor how your animals utilize the different grasses. You will have most valuable and least valuable grasses in the mix. 3. Selective grazing can deplete one grass species while others (least valuable) get a chance to multiply. It is difficult to control what animals chose to graze on, but as a farmer, you can practice the following; a. Rotational grazing (allowing valuable grasses to rest and recover from grazing pressure). b. Seed multiplication and grass establishment (allowing the most valuable grasses to produce and disperse seeds in a mass). c. Range re-seeding (reintroduce or plant the most valuable grasses in camps that has unwanted grass). d. Some farmers use controlled fire to burn unwanted grass. This needs carefulness and good management. e. Animals can also graze on least valuable grasses especially while fresh, but/and also during the dry season as only option. Proper lick supplements and water also helps your animal to utilize what is available. f. Adaptability also plays a role.
