Elite Dangerous Mini-Tutorial: How to Complete a Settlement Raid WITHOUT Upgraded / Engineered Gear
A tutorial on how to complete an on-foot raid / massacre mission at a surface settlement (for the Odyssey DLC) in the sci-fi space flight sim game, Elite:Dangerous.
In a previous video (ua-cam.com/video/zP4W4JKamqI/v-deo.html) I showcased completing a settlement raid mission. A commenter remarked, "Why dont youtubers do vids with basic vanilla setup?" (the mission was completed using fully-upgraded and G5 engineered equipment). To be fair, I DID make note that video was less a tutorial and more of a ride-along; that after editing 16 prior tutorials, I was in the mood to cut loose and have some fun. Which became the takeaway of the video: HAVE FUN!
But after giving it some thought, I concluded the commenter was correct. My goal with these videos is to help educate players new to Elite:Dangerous. It's unreasonable to expect them to have best-in-class gear so early in the game.
So, in keeping with the original spirit of this series, I present this redux of that previous tutorial; only THIS time I complete it with "vanilla" gear (i.e. no upgrades, no engineering). In an effort to present the most accurate recreation and reduce the variables, I accepted the same mission type (settlement raid) back to the same location (Gunther Engineering Enterprise) against the same minor faction (Usdia Purple Raiders). I even try to retrace the same path I took in the original video.
Enjoy!

      It's always been there for me when switching focus between the various in-ship panels. I don't know that it's actually functional as I've never accessed it as an input. I just considered it environmental window dressing to maintain immersion. If it *_IS_* a true virtual keyboard, I'm not aware of any means of accessing it.

    Thanks for the guide! Can I "pickle" these merit bonds?

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 10 днів тому

      "Pickle" as in save them up over time and then redeem them all at once? If that's what you're asking, the best answer I can offer is, _"I'm not sure."_ I know there are some things that, if not redeemed prior to the weekly server tick every Thursday, you lose them; I don't know if Merits are counted among them. At a minimum, if it is indeed a case of _"use em or lose em"_ at the weekly tick, you could at the very least save them up over a period of 7 days (assuming you started earning them on a Thursday and redeemed them the following Wednesday). Be aware, though, that any Merits redeemed and counted towards your rating with a Galactic Power NPC to whom you've pledged decay at the rate of 50% each week. For example, if you earned and redeemed with your Galactic Power NPC 100 Merits this week, then come Thursday morning after the server reset you'll only have 50 Merits to your credit. The idea behind it is it forces players to constantly have to prove themselves worthy of their rating level (and the perks that come with it) with their chosen Galactic Power by re-earning enough Merits week-to-week to maintain a desired rating. Fail to do so and your rating drops as your Merits decay. Essentially a loyalty test. If you're only earning Merits to unlock a unique module and don't care about maintaining a rating level over the long-term, common wisdom holds that you earn your 750 Merits in the 3rd week of your pledge. By redeeming them prior to that 3rd week's Thursday server tick, you go into your 4th week of being pledged with a rating of 3. This way you hit your 28th day of being pledged at the same time you've achieved the rating needed to unlock the module (both the time investment _and_ rating 3 are required for the unlock). If you redeem earlier than this and earn no further Merits (for example, redeeming them in your 2nd week rather than your 3rd), the Merit decay mechanic will leave you with too few Merits to hit rating 3 at the same time you reach your 28th pledge day. You'll be ineligible to unlock the module until you earn and redeem more Merits to bring you up to rating 3. However, Power Play 2.0 is slated for release in October. This will be a major reworking of the Power Play system. Included in this update will be a new 10-tier loyalty system that does not decay; once a Commander unlocks a tier, it's a permanent achievement. Whether it will still be called Merits or something else entirely is not known at present. Indications are there will be a variety of activities one can undertake to earn progress along this new 10-tier ladder. So it's possible Merit farming may become a thing of the past in a few weeks.

    Didn't know pulse lasers will be so effective, and I've been playing this for years :) I tend to always bring rail guns with short range + super penetrator. Also, nice job on doing quick work especially in CZ, those NPC ships are incredibly tanky.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 23 дні тому

      Thank you. Yeah, my HOTAS is too twitchy to maintain the steady aim required for effective rail gun use and I just can't bring myself to play using mouse & keyboard. So I had to find an alternative that would still allow for quick dispatch of CZ ships. I have a Corvette than can just brute force it with overwhelming firepower, but I wanted something that was more nimble and fun to fly. At the same time I needed a non-railgun alternative for sniping the Power Plant due to giving up the firepower of the Corvette. The result is what you see in the video. If interested in the build, see my response links to @JC33656's comment. Thank you for watching o7

      Are you playing on console or PC and - if the latter - which version of the game are you playing? I may be wrong about this, but I think the mouse widget toggle was added with an update and hasn't always been an available option. Thus platform and game version might be one possible explanation for why it's not working for you.

    • @defiant9809
      @defiant9809 24 дні тому

      @@JohnDoe-zl6qw Actually I figured out what the problem was a lil while ago this morning. I am using an X box controller for flying the ship and a combination of mouse and Keyboard as well for other functions. I have it set so I can use the mouse. Too look around the cockpit. while flying with one hand on the controller. Long story short. If you have head look on. So you can just move the mouse around, and look about. Even if the widget is on. Like your video shows. The widget will be turned off. While Head look is turned on. I did work out a compromise too look around with the widget on but it makes looking about a bit Janky because you have to use Key/ Buttons on the mouse to do it. I just wish they would fix it in the coding so you can do it right with head look on and still have the widget show up in the center of your screen with out it moving about.

      Correct; it's equipped with a Collector Limpet Controller module, sold at most starports. As you stated, you can collect items manually by aligning with them and then running over them with your cargo hatch open. However, I find that to be very tedious and time consuming; the collector limpets make short work of it by comparison.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 2 місяці тому

      The effect of reducing a module's integrity to 0% has changed over time. It _used_ to be the case that reducing the Power Plant to 0% caused the targeted ship to lose all power, including to thrusters. That is no longer the case; ships can still fly at full speed even with a 0% PP. The goal of targeting the PP is to cause it to detonate, destroying the ship (even if its hull is still intact). However, the chance to cause this explosion is small. I have no source for confirmation, but I read a long time ago the chance is 4% per shot that breaches to the PP _after_ it has reached 0%. Thus the goal is overwhelming volume of fire in the hope that one of the shots will "roll" somewhere within that magic 4% trigger. That is why the ship in the video is equipped with Pulse Lasers with the Rapid Fire engineering modification to achieve as many hits on the Power Plant as possible within a short time frame to hopefully trigger the explosion.

    • @josew.6423
      @josew.6423 23 дні тому

      Yeah is not that consistent. Also, I assume the ship is still working even at pp 0% because there's some charge still left in the power dist capacitors... or just Fdev applying some RNG :) if you disable their thrusters though, they start drifting away for sure. But keep shooting at their pp, is especially handy on big ships as going to a full fledged Anaconda's hull is quite the chore.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 23 дні тому

      @@josew.6423 Yep, even at 0% Power Plant integrity it's still putting out 50% of its capacity. And NPC ships, with no or little engineering, are generally not as power hungry as engineered player ships. Thus a zeroed Power Plant is less compromising for them.

    To note, this works best with high ROF weapons as you want as many strikes as possible such as (as demonstrated) rapid fire pulse lasers, burst lasers (rapid if you want best odds) and frag cannons (as each pellet can roll for a crit) notably the Pacifiers as you get much more of the shot on the plant, double shot if you really hate them. This is a minor use case for multi servos, but you’ll still probably be better off with oversized as crit chance increases the more damage you do.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 5 місяців тому

      Yes, as long as you're not shooting anything on the mega-ship, just scanning. There are other missions that task you with destroying the mega-ship's turrets (typically 5). That _WILL_ aggro the mega-ship, eliciting a lethal response.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 24 дні тому

      @commander_maddogtheog Unfortunately, I do not have a video of that. However, here's what I can recommend from having successfully done it myself: The _"Destroy Mega-ship Turret"_ missions typically task you with destroying the turrets' _power plants_ rather than the turrets themselves. To access these you first target a turret, scan it, then drill down into sub-targeting to find the power plant. As the power plant is the only sub-target available, that's easy enough. Sub-targeting can be accessed from your left-hand panel on the _"Targeting"_ page after you've scanned an object. Alternately, it can also be assigned to a keybind. Once you have a turret's power plant sub-targeted you can then *_ram it with your ship_* to destroy it. Though it can also be destroyed by shooting it, ramming will not elicit a lethal response from the mega-ship. It's a cheesy way of doing it, but perfectly "legal" within the game and a valid method for Commanders who fear they may not survive if the mega-ship were to turn hostile.

    Wait, how can you fire Beam Laser without reducing your power? What ship you are using?

    • @fartex1
      @fartex1 4 місяці тому

      he is most likely using a Krait Mk2 or a krait phantom ( i cant tell the difference on his hologram as i have never used one of those ships) they are very good at pve combat when engineered the right way! im using a corvette, one large and 2 medium lasers, also 2 small and 2 huge multicannons, and i dont lose power either. the trick is in engineering your power plant and your power distributor accordingly. you can engineer your beam lasers with effecient, making them draw less power, but losing dps, you can also add the experimental effect "flow control" so they draw 10% less power. you can do the same to your power distributor: " weapon focused" @grade 5 you get +60% capacity and +44% recharge rate for weapons only, comes at a cost to less recharge rate to other systems. again add flow control as experimental for less power draw on weapons. and last but not least: you can engineer your powrplant with " overcharged" wich wil give you +40% power generation at the cost of heat efeciency and a loss of you power plant module's integrety (hit points) of -25% now i have recently changed my engineering done on my corvette to put out max DPS, and only now, im sitting at a power loss, so i cant use all my weapons for days anymore, however, im killing enemies a lot faster... so yeah, its a trade off.. hope this helped you a bit. fly dangerous, stay safe CMDR... Glory to mankind! o7

      @@fartex1 From the weapons, its a Krait MkII. It also has an SLF hanger, which the Krait Phantom doesn't have.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 10 днів тому

      Krait MK II (which already has an outsized Power Distributor) with its PD engineered _Charge Enhanced_ + _Super Conduits_ experimental effect = near endless weapons capacitor (with 4 PIPs to weapons, of course). The Beam Lasers are engineered _Long Range_ + _Thermal Vent_ experimental effect.

      I tested this just now for confirmation. Changing this setting in ship control options makes no change to on-foot. On my screen, while on-foot, I have a blue dot in the center; I find no option for turning it on or off.

    Oh dear... this is sad. Especially since you already showed how to scan data links directly from your ship, without an SRV. You don't need to use an SRV to farm the Jameson Crash Site. Just hover your ship about 10-15 metres above the spot you parked the SRV, and use the ship's data link scanner to scan the comms controls, rotating/pivoting the ship as needed. A small ship makes this easier. I keep a custom-built stripped-down and engineered Sidewinder permanently garaged at Ray Gateway in the Diaguandri system (which is home to the nearest encoded mats trader), so it's always ready to go if I need to farm some more. (Also, there are FOUR comms controls at the site.. not three. You panned right past the fourth one in the mid-distance at the 3:13 mark!)

      0:48 The suit is a Grade 1 Dominator Suit, no engineering modifications. The weapons are all of the Manticore plasma variants, save the Oppressor (again, Grade 1, no engineering modifications): - 0:34 Manticore Executioner (sniper rifle) - 0:39 Manticore Intimidator (shotgun) - 0:43 Manticore Tormentor (pistol)

    can you do the same method in a Fortified system??

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 7 місяців тому

      To the best of my understanding of Power Play, Fortified systems are a sub-set of Controlled system (i.e. a Fortified system is always also a Control system, as only Control systems can be Fortified). So this method should work there, as well.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 8 місяців тому

      No hassle at all. And no need to feel bad; your comment was on point. Each has their own challenges. With the upgraded gear it offers the challenge for one-shot-one-kill if one does their part to aim and lead their target properly. Without the upgraded gear the challenge becomes leveraging all skills and equipment as a whole (grenades, energy cells, med kits, movement, positioning, etc.) to survive. Both are fun! :)

    But why? I never understood the purpose or appeal of power play.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 8 місяців тому

      For many players there's no appeal beyond unlocking the unique modules offered by the Power Play NPCs (e.g. Prismatic Shields, Pack Hound Missile Racks, etc.). Even so, one must still jump through the hoops of reaching rating 3 with the Power Play NPC and pledging for 28 consecutive days to be eligible to purchase these items. Rating 3 requires redeeming 750 Power Play Merits; thus the video.
