Tracking Your Sleep Isn't Helping Your Anxiety 😬
Hey y'all! I'm Dr. Rebecca Smith. I'm a clinical psychologist, and I'm on a mission to help high-achieving women get rid of anxiety, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism. 😎
If you're a perfectionist, are you obsessed with tracking your life? Steps, sleep, ounces of water, meditation sessions, on and on and on... our phones love to help us keep up with all the data. Interestingly, though, this may not be helping your anxiety. It might actually be actively making it worse 😳
And FYI, if you're in Louisiana or Virginia and are looking for a therapist, head to my website to book a free 15-min consultation! www.rebeccaaesmithphd.com/contact-therapy 💁🏼‍♀️

This is helpful! But how can you differentiate between perfect steak perfectionism vs trying to keep up a routine (like an exercise routine)

LOVE this question!! In my experience the difference is a subjective one -- it's totally ok to keep up a streak if it's (1) in line with your values and (2) not creating any pain or preventing you to live the life you want. Keeping up an exercise streak is great if it's helping you stay motivated! It veers into anxious perfectionism when the thought of breaking your streak spikes your anxiety, or when you feel too anxious to break the streak even though it's impairing your relationships or keeping you from other things that are important to you. The easiest way to check is to poke at it a little -- skip a day and check in with yourself about how that felt.

I'm in the midst of a big career shift thanks to saying no to something that I am good at and praised for, but that I'm just honestly tired of doing. I'm really excited to shift gears toward something that feels really true to myself! I actually thought about / talked about making this change for about a year and a half, but it wasn't until I saw your first video on stepping out of your comfort zone and being brave enough to be bad at something that I actually took the first concrete steps towards this change. THANK YOU for giving me a push in the right direction!

So, can I trick my perfectionist brain by reminding myself that satisficing is the best path to maximize my happiness? 😅

The reminder that trying something new is an act of bravery rather than a risk of failure is one I really needed to hear! Stepping out of our comfort zones is hard, but our world stays small if we always live within those boundaries ❤

Ack yes the risk of failure feels so real! It's like it eclipses all the opportunity there too. Thank you for supporting me in stepping out of MY comfort zone!

I love the idea of treating myself with sincerity versus seriousness! I put way too much pressure on myself to be excellent right away and could stand to give myself a little more grace in that department.

It's so hard, right?! I feel like we always compare ourselves to everyone else's finished product... seeing our stumbling first steps feels awful 🥴 I'm glad that idea felt like it could work for you! 💛
