    The problematic nature of any set philosophy is that it is very narrow minded in its narrative and not open to modifying, evolving, changing. Montessori is a complex and intelligent teaching method however it's not for all children and is rigid in many ways. Flexibility, receptiveness to change and open minded viewpoint is required, in my opinion.

    Do you have any recommendations for regression? I just started taking care of my niece who turns 4 next month and because of the really unstable situation she has been in for so long she has regressed quite a bit. One thing she does is when she gets a new pull up sometimes will run directly to the bathroom and poop in it instead of the toilet. I feel that a lot of the advice in this video would feel to “babyish” to her. She does intellectually know what to do but I haven’t yet dug into the psychology of regression (on my to do list for today) so I’m not sure how to go forward. I have never had kids so any advice is greatly appreciated!

    How many children are you taking care of in total when they are in the classroom? I learned about the importance of individualization in modern education as well but struggle to make that a reality with 30+ kids in my (traditional) classroom at once.

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom 5 місяців тому

      Class sizes are typically much smaller in Montessori schools. Numbers will vary from school to school, depending on ratio regulations and the size of the classroom, but I had 10 children in my classroom with 2 teachers. The Casa (3-6 year olds) classroom had 24 children with 3 teachers.

    As a multi-age (up to 15-18mo) classroom teacher, how would you recommend incorporating the “puzzle Ball” or anything else suspended, with older children who are interested in pulling up on a (unstable!) suspension frame or pulling on a suspended mobile object?

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom 7 місяців тому

      I wouldn't recommend having suspended objects or frames in a multi-age classroom unless you can figure out how to divide the room to keep the more mobile children away from them. Because young children likely won't be able to help themselves from being attracted to these objects, I would suggest installing some pull-up bars around the classroom and redirect them to use those for pulling up.

  • @ChristieeeMc

    How do you navigate a classroom that includes children of multiple ages, where such a mobile structure can be a falling hazard, if grasped by an older, non-walking child?

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom 7 місяців тому

      The safety of all children in the classroom is most important so I wouldn't have a mobile structure in a multi-age space. I have seen some classrooms designate a corner of the room for interactive mobiles, hanging them from an anchor in the ceiling but you'd need to ensure the long cords don't pose any strangulation hazards.

    Great video. I have a question that yet i couldnt find an answer to. Im a montesori teacher my students are 2 and 3 years old and i cant get them to focus on any work for more that 5 seconds. All of them want me to work with them individually in order to finsh the work and if I'm helping one child the rest are taliking to me its a maddness and yet I can't find a way to help them nuturalize. Any advice will be helpful. ... thank you!!

      Hi Sara, Thank you! I can relate to what you described, having been there many times before. Here's what I did in the classroom when I found the children weren't showing much interest in working independently: 1) Look at the work you have available on the shelves - the work may be too simple, too difficult or not interesting enough to hold their attention. I would spend some time observing the classroom to see what materials you could swap out. I often found inspiration from outdoor play, the questions they asked during group time or by asking parents what types of activities hold their child's attention at home. 2) If they're asking for help, it could be that the work is too difficult for them or they're seeking a connection with you. When this happened in the classroom, I would initiate group activities. Group activities allow you to work with multiple children and gives you a chance to present an activity to everyone at once. If presenting an activity to a group seems too overwhelming, you could also read a book or play some instruments just to break up the energy a little bit. I found group activities to be helpful for modeling the grace and courtesy exercises too. Using a quiet voice, waiting your turn, not interrupting, etc. 3) When a child needs help finishing their work, could you encourage another child to help them? 4) More practical life. In my experience, any time a child was having trouble with concentration in the classroom my mentors would say "direct them to the practical life area." Practical life exercises are fantastic because they involve so much movement and allow the child to refine their movements as they repeat them. 5) Don't worry about them "finishing" the work and invite them put it back on the shelf unfinished. You're trying to foster as much independence as possible and if they're not finishing the work independently just yet then that's something to work on in the coming months. If they're choosing their work independently and getting started independently then you're off to a great start. Try to focus on what they are doing successfully and build off of that. I hope this helps!

      You can definitely start now! I would start with practical life activities. In my experience, they're the ones that tend to draw children in most. I'm not sure what you can expect since it all depends on the individual child.

  • @menons1989
    @menons1989 9 місяців тому

    I get your point. But how do we deal with the other child and make him/her understand that he/she can't have things as and when they want, that they have to wait their turn. Doesn't pulling them back on their natural urges (as a child) also hurt their confidence. Where do we strike the balance.

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom 9 місяців тому

      That's a tricky one. You can only focus on your child. We can't stop other children from taking things but we can help our children to understand that they shouldn't just go and take things from other people. I see what you're saying about stifling natural urges but taking something you want when you want it when someone else is using it is not an area where I'd want to build a child's confidence. When a young child does this, we understand that they do so because they lack impulse control, they're focused on themselves, etc. and we handle the situation gently but it's not a behaviour to encourage.

    • @menons1989

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom 9 місяців тому

      After they use the toilet, you can put a clean diaper on using the standing diaper change method. At school, we had many children who were learning to use the toilet while still wearing diapers. This gave them time to grow more comfortable with the toilet while not worrying about eliminating in their pants. Cotton training pants work well too, they're a thicker underwear that won't leak as much if they miss the toilet.

    This was super informative! Thank you! I just have a question. In the US, there are screening tools that parents complete at well checks that ask whether a child has taken an interest in other children. If a child may not engage in parallel play until closer to 2 years old, why would this be a question asked for a child starting at 15-18 months? Is there a difference between a toddler taking an interest in a child and parallel play?

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom Рік тому

      You're welcome! A child may engage in parallel play earlier than 2 years, interest can start as early as 15 months. It really depends on the child. In my experience, the majority of children I've taught didn't show much of an interest until closer to 2 but that may be because it was a Montessori Classroom where the focus was more on independent work.

    • @themontessoriroom
      @themontessoriroom Рік тому

      Hi there! Yes, there is a second phase of mobiles that you can introduce once they need more interaction - The Bell on a Ribbon, Wooden Ring on a Ribbon and Puzzle Ball (for kicking). They invite the child to reach, grasp and kick. You could also introduce some very light, simple toys for them to explore with their hands and mouth, like the Interlocking Discs, Natural Wooden Rings or a small rattle.

    This was very helpful and I plan to get the book you recommended. While I raised my older boys (25,15&12) with time outs. I never really thought it was effective. However, I thought it was better than spanking. In an attempt to get our middle son to calm down he spent a lot of time isolated in the teacher’s office or the open bathroom at his Montessori school. This often times escalated the issue as he was very social and it often lead to him finding ways to sneak out of the isolation. Fast forward to me raising our twin girls at home. (Turned 3 last week) I’m very interested in learning how to help them self regulate. Thank you again for this post and I look forward to reading more on the subject.
