    My most expensive months are coming up as well. I need to get my pellets, fortunately I don’t need as much as you, one pallet should work. One insurance policy is due in November. Property taxes and a second insurance policy are due in December. Then, at some point, I have to pay for the house remodel. Mrs Failure wanted to take the kids on a cruise in February until I told her how much money was leaving before the end of the year. Ouch. 🤕

      It never seems to slow down... expenses are always piling up no matter where you look. We are bracing for all the money we need to spend to purchase all new furnishings for our home. Question? Curious Why do you invest in individual stocks? Most FIRE folks go the low commission ETF or Mutual Fund routes and just buy the market. Rich

    • @OurRetireEarlyJourney
      @OurRetireEarlyJourney 7 днів тому

      Great question Rich. As of last month our breakdown of assets were: 44% S&P 500 Mutual Fund, 38% Growth ETFs, 12% Cash, 3% Individual Stocks, 2% Dividend ETFs. We have very little of our assets in individuals. We like to play in the market, thus individual stocks. We have had success with them in the past and decided to start investing in them again. In the long run, they will likely only represent 2-3% of our portfolio. We do know other Fire people that have very large portions of their investments in individual stocks. We have been aggressive in investing but that is too aggressive for us. Thanks for watching!

    I wouldn't say it is a real fail, things happen for sure. We have a budget set for "Errors" to cover the cost of things like this that allows us to use the funds to cover things like this if unexpected expense occur. then comes the next payday the money gets moved into a savings or other funds like projects to renovate a room etc. You both are doing great, I see everything you are doing as inspiration to everyone else looking to retire too.

    I don't think that would work for us--budgeting based on a set monthly amount. We pay our semi annual real estate taxes (no escrow) so we need to budget that and plan for it in monthly increments because it is large--I am in Illinois so we are high too! We also pay all of our insurance (auto, homeowners, etc.) once a year to get an annual discount. But that is a big amount so we put away for it monthly so we have it when it hits in February. How does Christmas work? As much as you plan, there are always extra expenses. I like having a Christmas sinking fund so I am not stressed out at a time of year when I want to focus on memories. Finally, I love our vacation sinking fund. I don't book a vacation until I know I have the money to pay for it, especially if it's a cruise or all inclusive. That means I can be paying months ahead but you know there are always unexpected costs so I like to pay it early. A hit like that requires a sinking fund. But I will give it some thought--it could work for the other expenses we have. As always, thanks for the video--it's a pleasure watching you on this journey!

    • @OurRetireEarlyJourney
      @OurRetireEarlyJourney 7 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and sharing. We also pay our property taxes every 3 months which are over $3000 each payment. We do the same with our insurances as you have stated as well. Our expenses monthly are pretty high due to where we live. By flatlining the amount, we've moved some of the payments around to be able to pay this way. Christmas for example, we are going to start buying in Oct and Nov because we have a property tax bill due in Dec. We have years of spending categorized so we know every month what bills are coming and the averages, so we know where we can do more or less. This allows us still to have fun in this journey rather than just pay for necessities and obtain our goal without "living".

      @@OurRetireEarlyJourney I get it. So certain months you overspend in certain categories so you have availability to spend in others the months the expenses are due. Guess I am creature of habit--just peeling certain amounts off my paycheck and into a sinking fund so when the taxes or insurance are due, I have the money. In Ilinois, we pay taxes June 1 and September 1 so we don't even get a 6 month break. They squish them together (and YES, I think that is not a very nice way to do that). Hence a sinking fund works best.

      The flat based budgeting has really helped us a ton reduce expenses, especially since August of 2023. Thank you Katie for watching and the kind words. We feel blessed to be in the position we are in now. It wasn't easy getting this far but its possible with the knowledge and discipline. We just wish we knew a lot of this much earlier in life.

    Just watched your Winter New Hampshire video on why you were moving from New Hampshire. We did the same thing from Connecticut. Was wondering where you went to?

      Thank you for watching both. We are relocating to eastern TN. The weather in the mountains here is much like NH, minus the brutal winters.

    Early retirement is a nice goal, though what I really want is financial independence for the ultimate freedom.

      Thank you for watching and sharing. We want that freedom as well. The plan is to retire, but you never know. We might actually keep working as we do love our careers and companies.

      Thank you for watching and sharing. We learned from a comment that it was created due to Starbucks offering part time workers benefits where most companies do not if you are part time. We still aren't a huge fan of using it.

    Yeah 9 was my earliest job for my parents metal fab biz 😂. Worked ever since. I'm almost there at 52. Minimal mortgage debt. Stress is a big motivator to retire

      Wow, 9! That is so young. Stress is a big motivator for us as well. It's Monday morning now and you know last night we were prepping for the work week already. It will be nice when we do not have to do that. Thank you for watching and sharing.

    What will you guys do about healthcare?

    • @OurRetireEarlyJourney
      @OurRetireEarlyJourney 11 днів тому

      Thank you for watching and the question. We are planning on either buying one through "Obamacare" or hunting one out that is local to our community. We do know that TN has a Farm Bureau that offers affordable health plans. In our planning we are currently planning on out of pocket costs for health insurance.

      Thank you for watching and sharing! It sure is a dream. We are trying to hit that number. We aren't penny pinching to get there, but we sure are not taking lavish vacations often, nor spending money on nice vehicles, etc. Just trying to get that time back.

    Well thought out as always. Your reasons are all the same as mine. There’s no question that you will enjoy it just as much as I do. BTW, kayaking was one of the first retirement hobbies that I tried. I really enjoyed it for a few years but they did try to kill me twice. Now I’ve gotten better at motorboating and it’s been a couple of years since I got the kayaks out.

      LOL We can't wait... congratulations on being able to retire so early! We wish we could have done that, but we really did not start planning until we were 42 & 44. We had been saving in 401ks but not doing it how we should have been. Any tips for how you were able to get to a point to be able to retire at 44?

      @@OurRetireEarlyJourney Marry smart. In our culture we were taught to be frugal and high achievers. Wife and I both bought houses pre 2017 when we were single (now we live in one and the other is rental income), and both invested 15% into 401k since we started working in our 20's. Since we got married we've been focusing on investing in brokerage to bridge the gap between our retirement and when pension and 401k kicks in in 15 years.

    I agree with all of this. Like you, I’m trying to retire early primarily to get my time back. Like you guys, I got a paper route when I was 11 years old and 35 years later I’ve never had a break. Today is a beautiful day in NH and I would have loved to go for a hike, but it’s Thursday so I had to go to work.

    Why a resort community? I would love to see a video on a breakdown of the community you chose, costs, etc.

    • @OurRetireEarlyJourney
      @OurRetireEarlyJourney 14 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and the question. We chose a resort community because we are social people and as we age we generally become more isolated and did not want to be in the woods alone forever. We wanted to be around other people that are social as well and have "built in" activities in a master built community such as hiking trails, gym, pools, lakes, golf courses, tennis, racquet ball, etc. We love that the entire community is manicured and looks beautiful. It's very strict, but we actually like that. Lastly, we like that we have our own police, fire, churches, grocery store, restaurants, assisted living facilities ect all accessible within minutes.
