Welcome to Smedstorp, a small homestead on one and a half acres in the Bergslagen district of Sweden. My name is John and I live here with two cats and a gang of chickens. I spend my days either in the vegetable garden or the workshop, that is when I'm not lying in a hammock soaking up the sun (yes, the summers in Sweden are fantastic!) Join me as I build machinery, harvest rainwater, repair whatever happens to be broken right now and tackle all of the questions and problems that arise in the garden. I'm working towards my goal to be off grid and self sufficient, but I still have a way to go.

The heating in my house is entirely off grid, and has been all through the cold Swedish winter. Even in temperatures of -20° celcius I've been warm and comfortable with a minimum of effort. I can keep the house ridiculously warm and cook food even if the power goes out, and my electricity bill hasn't gone up despite electricity prices being six times higher than normal.

Here is the easiest and most effective way to carry firewood from the woodshed and into the house! Make it yourself for free if you can find two 25 liter containers, otherwise it's cheap even if you have to buy the containers. Mine have been in use all winter for the last three seasons and are still going strong...

This week - I build an egg incubator to be able to hatch hens eggs here at the homestead! It's made mostly from stuff that I had lying around and leftovers from other projects, but even if you have to buy everything you need it's still cheap to make, and it works well. How I built an atv bale trailer from stuff I had lying around! I use straw and hay in the vegetable garden, as part of the no-dig method. No black magic there, I just like to avoid digging if I can. This bale transporter means that I can move bales myself instead of relying on someone who has a tractor. The trailer can be towed behind an atv, quad bike or tractor, but I just use my car.

Отлична работа! Получилось очень красиво. Обычно используют еловые ветви. Ветки нагревают на огне, смола топится и ветви снановятся гибкие. При связывании столбов еловые ветки нужно дополнительно перекручивать по часовой стрелке, тогда они не ломаются. Это есть в видео "Gärdsgårdsbygge på Åsens by"

Hi! Can you tell me the length from pivot point to pivot point? Trying to build my own but it's not quite working as I want to. Thanks a lot! You were the inspiration that I needed to tackle this project.
Hi! I’m so happy that I inspired you! I have 32cm between the pivot points, the pivot point on the trailer is 10cm lower than the pivot point on the cradle. The pivot point on the trailer is 24cm above the ground. What problems are you having? I would suggest cutting lengths of wood and screwing them losely together to perfect the geometry if like me you dont know how to work it out in a computer program 😊
I like this idea in that the load would be balanced. I pulled my back out once carrying wood with one hand. I would imagine those containers don't add much in the way of weight and they would be pretty durable. Unfortunately I have two doors to go through and a narrow hallway. Not good.
