I don't think it starts the car. The original key has a chip in it. Without the chip, all you can do is turn the car on to ACC (to play the radio and see the odometer) and not actually start the car. I have old Honda keys that have broken and have been replaced. After taking a transponder out and putting it into the new replacement, all I can do is turn the car on to ACC.
