The BIG LIE of Piano Tuning: Part 2 of interview with piano technician Marc Wienert
The 10th episode of the Music to Compose You Podcast is LIVE which marks the season finale of the first season.
It's a high note indeed to conclude SEASON ONE with Part 2 of the conversation with world renowned piano technician Marc Wienert.
We all could guess that the job of a piano tuner and technician involves much detail, precision and COUNTLESS repetition.
BUT... did you know that the job description of a piano tuner also entails being a REALLY GOOD LIAR?
Another aspect of tuning pianos is that it breeds a kind of 'high-res' approach to living life.
That means a focus to detail on the 'micro' level that some people might overlook...
This intentionality bleeds into other areas of life like food, cooking, researching--even making the 'perfect cappuccino'.
What lessons can we learn from the world of piano tuning to live life on a higher resolution and simply be happier?
In today's episode, Part 2 of 2 we explore the topics:
-Why Marc calls himself 'a liar' and how piano tuning comes down to concealing a bunch of little lies.
- Creating your personal 'sound archetype' for your sonic environment...an exercise in knowing yourself in a deeper way.
-The difference between 'noise' and 'signal' and how this affects you from inside-out.
-How to bring a 'high-res' approach to everyday tasks for increased joy and discovery.
It's not everyday that a novel is written about a piano tuner. And yet, a book about a piano obsession turned into a NYT bestseller and it features our guest, Marc Wienert.
The reason is that piano tuning is much more than the sum of its parts. Marc Wienert brings a holistic mind, spirit and aesthetic approach to his craft. His musings about the world of piano and beyond will open up portals of discovery.
I hope you enjoy this conclusion of a conversation with a fascinating man as we close Season One of the podcast.
Season Two coming soon and I can't wait to share the details. It will be so exciting!

I am just starting out. I want to play piano in many styles. There is another way to play scales without any thumb tucking. I have no idea what it is called yet, but I like that rocking hand idea for scales.

Love this! Years ago, my piano was being reconditioned and when it was time to finish up, they called to ask how I wanted the registration. I don’t know what brilliant words to use. Not trained. I said I wanted it to have a tender touch and play like butter. Currently working on Chopin Raindrop prelude.

1:04 I mean… nobody who tells you to tuck the thumb under tells you to move the hand "out of alignment" like this… nor is flapping the elbows like a chicken something that's ever recommended. That's a mistake children make because they lack wrist flexibility. I mean yes, rotating the forearm is a necessary component, but it's not the ONLY one. With a flexible wrist, it can freely move with great elasticity, so one doesn't ever HAVE to turn the hand and lift the elbow like that, keeping excessive movement to a minimum.

Very interesting analysis of the exposition of this piece, and certainly gives food for thought when listening to the rest of it. I believe any music can be enjoyed from a purely abstract musical perspective, but at the same time it can be rewarding to analyze it and think about its extramusical meanings. That so much of Beethoven's music seems to express triumph over struggle makes it so inspiring.

Very useful information, but the autofocus on the camera is a massive distraction. The camera keeps shifting from your face to your reflection and in some places it's impossible to see your fingers properly. I would get rid of the mirror behind you, then I would use fixed focus on your fingers.
