Hello. My name is Margaret Wacyk.
Welcome to my channel and The Grand Manner…
where the late 1800’s Romantic ideals are embraced.
In those days, the ancient, the wild and mysterious…
Mingled with awe.
This, they called the ‘Sublime.’
An entry-way into this enchanted world was the piano.
Pianistic meteors like Franz Liszt rose alongside the apex of grand piano design...
A culmination known as the Golden Era.
And what spilled out of this overflow was a passionate alchemy:
Where the earthly piano became a portal to the Divine.
Let’s explore this world and see where it takes us.

Music, What Do You Mean? Beethoven Series Part 2 of 8
"Music can change the world because it can change people". Bono
But how can it do that? What is this language of music that speaks to people universally and what does it actually mean?
In this episode, from the “A Passion for Life Series” Elevating Above the Ordinary Like Beethoven we will go to the piano and cover:
• Music, meaning and danger: Why some people go to great lengths to protect it
• How to listen deeper and how that positively impacts everything in our life.
• What is inner listening: Why is it so important to Tune In and how do we do that?
• What is the 19th century Revelation Theory of art
• How did Beethoven feel about the Revelation theory of art.
• Why is this ESSENTIAL to embrace for our modern time.

Imagine finding joy in each note, each pause, each crescendo. 🎵 This piece Spozalizio by Franz Liszt is inspired by his impressions of Italy and the art of Michelangelo. His genius of painting with sound depicts ordinary human emotions such as tears in the most extraordinary way. In today’s dive into the notes of Liszt’s Dante Sonata we hear a musical translation of Dante’s words in the first Canto of the Inferno: “The way resumed I, on the desert slope. So that the firm foot ever was the lower.” Dante is groping up a dark slippery slope… struggling- falling. We can all relate to being in a time of despair and feeling lost…Falling down. Very useful information, but the autofocus on the camera is a massive distraction. The camera keeps shifting from your face to your reflection and in some places it's impossible to see your fingers properly. I would get rid of the mirror behind you, then I would use fixed focus on your fingers.

Love the idea for this podcast, and I enjoyed the first episode very much. It was also interesting hearing your story. I have also sought healing from childhood trauma and health issues through music. I look forward to listening to future episodes!
Thank you so much for your words and for listening. I so appreciate what you say about healing through music--such a powerful way to connect to deep emotions. What music is your favorite? Sending much love!
@@MargaretWacyk My favorite composer is JS Bach. He was the first composer I got into when I was a teenager, and although I love all kinds of classical music, I always come back to him as my favorite.
this lengthy, fast explanations are starting to aggravate me a bit, why is there no slow motion demonstration, instead of all that exhausting words?

I only came across this very helpful video now, and am unable to open the link to the exercises nor that for the 60 minute webinar. Are these still available? Thank you.
Hi Monica- Thank you so much. I'm so happy you found the video helpful. Here is the link: go.thegrandmanner.com/1?r_done=1
You are right, angling the hand differently like that when the thumb goes under will slow anyone down in piano, that's why no one teaches to play that way. There is so much tension in your hands. :( Look how tightly you hold your fifth (pinky) fingers. When not playing, they should be resting quietly on the keys, not held up tensely against your palms. First, no high-level teacher ever teaches a student to angle the hand differently when the thumb goes under, and doesn't teach rotation during scales, either, as that produces unevenness in tone and is simply unnecessary extra movement. Time for more piano lessons, my friend. Choose your teacher wisely.
OMG! Thank you so much!
Welcome!

Miss your videos. Hope all is well. 🎹
Thanks, the same as jordan rudes says... Can't be wrong😊
Wow beautiful and breathtaking❤❤😢
Your explanation is very clear and professional, but I would kindly request you to please remove the annoying sounds from your video. They make it appear less sophisticated and hinder the understanding of the content due to the presence of unnecessary sound effects.
Your video is so beautiful and soothing! I never knew much about King David but love Chopin. I can’t go a day without playing his music. Now I will learn more about these two’s similarities. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Yes, you do not want to practice bad technique at any cost. That way bad technique or parts of skills are not ingrained into your brain automatically as an inefficient way to play.
'this might seem a bit tricky'! Are you kidding, at last I can understand it, thank you for getting through to me!!
So happy it helped! All the best!
Hello Margaret. Nice explanation and nice of you. One question; IF arpeggio key after third finger farther then next key, how to reach them without turning the hand ? Thank you.
Excellent advice, really helps aid natural flow which results in less tension buildup in note saturated passages, As for piano problem needing solving? I'd say quicker, more agile double thirds and sixths
Very good information, thanks. For teachers nowadays though, a lot of pupils have digital electronic pianos at home. Can you still apply the tone technique?
Thanks for your question. I have had students with digital pianos and still teach the technique--it helps with evenness and once they play on a piano they have a good framework.
I just picked up piano a new hobby. Thanks so much for these great tips for the beginners🙏
Amazing!
I found one of your videos and decided to download your practice plan. I followed it and set up my three-minute sessions. I also worked on some of your listed practice needs. I was surprised by well it helped me to play the first four phrases of music I struggle to learn and move into the fourth without working so hard. And now I can play these notes without the music in front of me. I am working on Cannon, a version done by Denes Agay. I have played and practiced the piano for many years on and off. My piano is a 1937 Betsy Ross Spinet. The last few years I have pushed myself and decided to move passed just learning a few very hard pieces and the easy Christmas music I love playing at that time of year. This year I had my piano completely refurbished and had my hammers changed. It is like new, and the sound makes me want to play so much more. I am working really hard at practicing for at least 2 hours a day. I struggle to follow one consistent piano educator. I have used various books over the years. I will work at songs that resonate with me. And today I strive to play Elton John, and many different types of music which I love but don't stay in my memory for very long. Or I lose interest in playing and working on. For years I have played and completed many of the exercises found in Hannon. I have also learned most of my scales and work to complete those I haven't. As I have gotten faster and better at sight reading, I want to learn to play original pieces that have had nothing done that makes them easier. But of course, this is challenging, and I have to slow down and take the time to get to that level. Most original music is difficult. But I cannot waste time learning pieces that are too easy when the original would be so much more productive for me to learn. I will continue to watch and use your videos. I am almost completely self-taught. But of course, no one is an island. I have used many great piano educators and talented musicians. And I see the music and the end result and work to play music the way I hear it and believe it should be played. I really enjoyed going through your ideas with what to work on in a practice session. It really helped me to focus and to see the music played in a different way. To break it down and change it up. These are excellent ideas, and you are so far, my favorite Vlogger on educational piano instruction. I have no aspirations to become professional. I am a retired nurse and have terrible stage fright. But my aspirations are not trivial, and I endeavor to become an excellent pianist. Thank you for all your efforts to help me become a better pianist.
Dear Jeannet...What a beautiful message! I thank you so much for taking the time to write and apologies for not responding sooner. I somehow did not see this lovely message until now and it truly lifted my heart. I am so excited to hear about your piano playing and am so happy that these videos were of service. I'd love to hear how your playing is coming along and which music you are currently working on. Sending so much love!
So beautiful, you are such a source of inspiration
So grateful for your words!
Thanks for your lesson! Your firm fingertips, well arched hand and light arm advice gives a new sensation of security, ease and better control of sound in my playing. Very gratefull!
Yay! So happy to hear this! Wishing you all the best!

@@MargaretWacyk my favorite part was the solution. Only a half step away! Very interesting how the tri tone changed from siren to comfort by the half step each way
Precious tips and funny video editing, thank you very much Margaret !
I don’t really get where 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock are positioned. It looks like the thumb is not positioned to go under the hand when the 3rd or 4th finger plays.
Great information presented by speaker Margaret that didn't need the intruding special effects.
Thank you kindly
I thought a half way staccato was called detaché(?)
The second rendition you also played it faster, and you phrased it nicely, and of course the balance between melody and accompaniment was super clear!❤ LOOOOVE your explanations!! One of the more difficult things, for my students is to get the right balance between the hands. I used to start them off by playing one hand, and pretend playing the other hand, or playing on their arm instead of the piano, to feel the heaviness required to make a louder sound, and the lightness required to make a soft sound. Because that heaviness has to stay the whole time, not only when you attack the note initially. These things seem to help, but I’m always looking for new ways to demonstrate or explain or motivate. Thank you for this marvelous explanation/demonstration! ❤🙏
I never have read or seen F. Liszt with such curved fingers? The good things of F. Liszt exercises is the crescendos and diminuyendo <3 Great videos <3 Take care with these exercises they can produce a lot tension and over training of the muscles inside the palm which control lateral movements <3
Wow incredible! Thank you ❤
