Documenting my travels, with an emphasis on the humble bicycle
9 speed chain on 8 speed drivetrain (Shimano)
I was surprised how quickly the 8 speed chain wore out on my Brindabella bikepacking trip, so I figured I'd try and replace it with a far more durable 9 speed one. This video is just a summary of the install and what I learned from the first test ride. Have you got experience running this kind of setup? Let us know in the comments!

East Australia Cycle Tour: Highlights
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
3 months on tour summarised in 30 minutes. I originally wanted to make this video less than 5 minutes long, but couldn't seem to do it justice. I also toyed with the idea of whether or not I wanted to add music to the video, but I think it's more important to show things as they really were rather than make everything overly glamorous. Hope my editing decisions pay off and you enjoy the video. ...

Overnight bicycle trip in the Brindabellas
Nice trip and video mate. Shame about the stack
The issue is the spacing of the cassettes. The spacing on an 8 speed cassette is wider than a 9 speed cassette and same with the chains respectively. So you will eventually have the chain “ slip “ and that is not good especially when you’re climbing. I’ve done a 9 speed chain on an 8 speed cassette and it won’t work after a certain amount of KMs. It may work for a little while but I would not recommend doing this. Stick with 8 speed chain with 8 speed cassette and so on…
At 4.20: l would never leave behind a spanner like that. But l am sure someone else will collect it.
nice video, but whom in their right mind would go back to canberra ?
Whole lot of equipment for a green person I’d say.
Excellent content. And a different and more immersive way to see and be part of the this land
That was a great ride 1P! May I ask your weight?
That riding was quite exciting....and at times risky
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Did you mention why you decided not to travel via the rail trails down to Ipswich / Brisbane? If you’re thinking of a shorter trip in the future I’d recommend a Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Kilkivan, Rail Trails loop.
I love this episode
from the looks of it you didnt size the mew chain? the rear derailleur was bending backwards more than with the worn chain whoch makes the new xhain "lomger" and "loose" which will cause shifting, teeth engagement and retention issues. you can easily find instructions on how to properly size a chain here on yt.
This is one of the very few sources showing directly that it is possible to route a 9-spd chain through an 8-spd derailleur. I have friction shifters and am upgrading to a 9-spd cog in the rear. The cable pull and geometry do not concern me. All I needed to know was that I can save a pretty penny by buying an 8-spd derailleur instead of the more expensive 9-spd ones. Thanks for the video!
Just came across your series and from your highlights video I saw you came through the Sunshine Coast, I’ve said this more than once watching these cycling trip videos from hard core bike tourers ‘oh if only he/she had a bit of local knowledge’. I know exactly where you were lost and exactly the way you should have gone. Oh well. And also cycling down the Steve Irwin really is a nightmare. If ever you are up this way again a better way to go would be the Old Gympie road, it’s got a bit of rough rugged dirt section for a few k’s but the rest of it is bitumen quiet and nice. Looks like a fantastic trip looking forward to watching some more. Thanks for putting it all together and sharing.
Interesting how you can hear the tire pickup stones into the mud guards.
Hi, I am planning to do something similar, a solo trip on a bicycle of an Asian woman who's never been to Australia (but I've travelled many other places..) Have you found easily spots to set up your tent? Would it be safe for me? 🤣🤣
Oh i saw you mentioned it was life-changing experience if enough time/money. How much did you spend after all? 🤣 Sorry i have lots of questions
@@TJHTouring Thanks Ted for your kind reply; I am super glad and assured to hear what you said... I am getting more inclined to do this! Thanks so much :) hope you are well and best wishes on your life!
Hi! Is your cassette 11-42 teeth?
Any risk with a 8speed chain on an 9speed cassete
@@TJHTouring Am using 8s chain on 9s cassette withou any problem, 8s chain is little bit wider, but is stronger, the length of the links is the same
What is camera model on bike?
Going to watch this East Coast playlist. So far it's great. Good editing too. :)
Hi Ted, which part of the Brindabella's is this section?
@@TJHTouring I am in Canberra. How can I contact you directly to discuss this and your other videos?
Wow wery biutifull thank
Great effort boys!
Top quality dad-joke
do 8 speed drivetrain work on 9 speed chain ?
Hey Ted, what type of skull cap is that you are wearing at around 9:44? I notice it in your other videos. I burn with my Irish and Scottish genes and need something similar for long rides.
28:17 Ahh the algae 🦠🦠🦠. Another great trip.
Gutsy effort, especially taking on the Brindabella range.
I remember seeing that "Ban Islam" graffiti on the way past. Stay classy Queensland!
Film the relevant process and then speed it up so can't see what you're doing.......great 👎
It looked like you had the saddle pack Mounted on some sort of rail.ci thought they just strapped to the seat nd post
nice trip!
We did something similar to this in 2017, but in reverse and we rode out along the Wee Jasper road. It was actually a highlight of the tour and was not at all badly corrugated, just a typical rural gravel road. We took 7 days for our tour, not needing to race it in any way. We planned for about 70km per day. Batlow, the ride over to Tumbarumba, the river road through Walwa to Granya, and the High Country Rail Trail alongside Lake Hume were a few of the other highlights.
How the performance of the 9speed to 8speed cogs now
just bought a maid outfit while watching this video, 10/10
Hi Ted, great video. Do you have a gpx file for the trip?
@@TJHTouring I'm thinking of going from Grenfell to Canberra and return.
Was that the hb53 shimano chain?
Do you have a gpx file or Google route etc... that can look at ?
If upload a rough route u took. Like gpx...I'll add some places u didn't go on that that would recommend
Love this whole series. Hoping to have myself a similar adventure, also from Canberra, but maybe towards Melbourne and then Adelaide. The trick will be finding a spare month or so to actually do it! :-)
Breathtaking scenery, lovely presentation. Thanks!
Respect to anyone who can do Desert Storm by hand/breath.
Why did I just learn about this channel? This is awesome, I will be going from Gold coast to Perth.. I don’t think I will be as fast as you though in this trip
My chain on a 10speed cassette road bike lasts the same millage as my fixed gear single speed bike. Chain gets destroyed by sand and dirt being stuck in chain links. I want to try to wax my chain, to keep it clean. It should work for you in Australia, if you don't get that much rain.
@@TJHTouring Thank you for the link. Hope I can order their product from US.
@@TJHTouring Did you try it on your chain?
Hi Ted, great video of your trip. In 2016, I cycled Brisbane to Melbourne via the coast on exactly the same bike. I have just bought the 2021 version. Great bikes :)
@@TJHTouring Sold the 2014, had too many bikes. I'm starting to think about my next big ride, maybe perth to melb
Just want to say (again) that this series was such a joy to watch!
Bicycles, ebikes and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing safe, protected bike lanes and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school or ride for fun.
Just wondering why you didn’t use the low rider front pannier rack?
Nice vid, great part of Australia 🤙.
Nice scenery and no annoying background music. I always wanted to do an epic day trip from Square Rock car park at Namagi NP to Mt Bimberi via the Smokers Trail and Cotter RD on a MTB. I think the MTB exclusion in parts of the Brindabellas is disappointing considering more damage would be done by wild brumbies!
