I'm Calmer, and this is my newer (branded) UA-cam Channel! I've been on YT since 2007 and used to make short IRL videos, but I decided to make another channel to match the name most of the Internet knows me by these days.
Speaking of which, if my name looks familiar, you've probably seen me on Twitch as Calmer_ ! I'm a Twitch/Discord Moderator for many places, as well as a Technical Producer for livestreams, and occasionally I do stream on my own channel.
I have over 30 years of history with video games, including little known facts, exploring mechanics in-depth, and of course a little bit of speedrunning. Point is, you can expect almost anything I do here or on Twitch to have something to do with video games!

Chao Research 2024: What You Never Knew
"What are the highest Luck and Intelligence Grades legitimately possible for my Chao in the 'HD' version of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle?"
In March of 2024, I asked this simple question upon revisiting one of my childhood GameCube games, having been rereleased on Steam in 2012. I had decided to try my hand at Chao breeding all these years later, only for that single question to drop me into a rabbit hole of information deeper than I ever expected.
... But I would soon find out that there was still plenty of information about this game's Chao mechanics that wasn't readily available, wasn't clearly compiled, or perhaps wasn't ever even documented before.
Two months later, I intend for this video to fix that.

Night of the Shrouded Ghost

My first week of Sea of Thieves Season 11 ended with not one but TWO unexpected encounters, one of which is so rare that some pirates claim it doesn't exist!
Karma in Sea of Thieves

A short video showing a fun encounter I had at the end of Season 10 of Sea of Thieves. I'm well aware that I didn't censor any usernames in this video; please do not attempt to hunt these players down in-game or elsewhere. They were likely just children, and no one deserves to be harassed for having fun in a video game.
Still here wish I would have been smart enough to back up all my old files
What an absolute masterpiece of a video! I am truly impressed by the work and effort you put into this single video. The work you did could help me because I'm trying to make my own mods for the Chao system. 👀
How to I hack a perfect chao into the game?
YEP AND HERE I AM WITH ALMOST 4K HOURS AND NOTHING :(
I'd rather fight a shrouded ghost than have a gf
I just started replaying my childhood copy of sa2b and wanted to get more seriously into the chao breeding mechanics, and I knew I was doomed when I read "chao genetics are too complex to use punnett squares" and "we still don't know what determines personality, more research needs to be done"
Now I know why chao garden aint coming back 😭 The amount of time, detail and effort put into an entirely separate mode from the main game is actually insane. The chao color, type, stats, and many other things as said in the video is truly wild. Getting a new chao garden would be amazing but it would take way too long due to everything at hand. Amazing explanation of everything especially the luck and int stats. Thank you very much for your help sir! 😄🤝
Only 900?
I always thought the visible stats determined what as passed on, that's kind of the point of grinding to breed all S chao. finding out DNA determines it sucks and makes sense because vie been breeding two chao that have two S rank stats ranks each, but their kid only ever gets 1 or no S rank stats
Rip. We heard this music a few nights ago and ignored it thinking it was a bug.
That's it? What about any research regarding min-maxing chao stats themselves or how color works when breeding chao? This is sorely missing a lot more... unless this only has the research that WASN'T properly documented previously and I just didn't know.
That's exactly what it was, as mentioned multiple times in the video/document/title. The things people in the community *did* already know about are covered in detail on the Wiki, and in videos like ua-cam.com/video/odHgNBEqByo/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/oiJV0o2dN_c/v-deo.html which I always recommend checking out.
@Calmer_GM Oh God, that's actually epic. Thank you so much for the videos, btw. Also, chao are the cutest beings to have ever been invented, imho.
Had no idea that intel and luck could have a minimum and maximum stat like the other 5 stats. I just recently went on a chao garden grind to try to get a perfect chaos two toned shiny chao that i just learned probably isnt perfect😢
For what it's worth, if you're playing on anything besides Dreamcast, Luck is largely a non-functional Stat, so you won't really miss much there. But Intelligence on the other hand definitely helps.
Not real. Paid Actor. **Grumbles in Jealousy**
really hoping the next mainline adventure title has a newer chao garden as well.
And you solo slooped it! Haha that's awesome
I've been keeping up to date with chao stuff for two decades but this video is the first time I've ever heard of the shiny Tails, Sonic and Shadow chao... Hopefully one day they'll be found 🙏
Watched all the way to the end. Gonna see if a Twitch streamer I watch will make it a stretch goal since her mod loves Sonic, and she did do a 8 hour long Eve Online documentary once.
watched this in two parts, amazing video ngl. the fact that you did all of this yourself with no monetary gain/motivation is insane to me honestly. this sorta feels like a sequel to cybershells chao video, going into even more detail on specific features all of this effort just for the optimal chao is certainly something, to say the least
It took me the second viewer discretion advisory for me to realize what you were talking about the first time and yeah...
forget the shrouded ghost, how to you get that cyan glowing set that you had on your hurdy gurdy
This was some top notch stuff dude, I'd love to see more chao research, hopefully it can help bring more attention to the CG again cuz I'd love for the community to grow more. Also the section talking about the "inconvenient" TCG in Advance 2 was so relatable cuz I just went through that process this week for the first time and no game has ever made me seethe so badly before 😭
this was nice
9:50, lol you said "Final Egg"
Dude, the amount of effort put into this video, unbelievable ! I tip my hat for you my brother, for your efforts shall not be wasted but accumulate to the collective education and understanding of the world of chao garden, and may your name shall not be forgotten, but be engraved on the stone pillars that hold this community together among other great heroes. 🙏🏻💙
What mod did you use to see the Chao Data?
If you mean the one accessed through the Pause Menu, that'd be Chao Data Menu by Justin113D.
48:00 Never heard of this shiny tails chao before, I'm sort of a chao professor myself, I wrote a Wii app that reads the GC savefiles to manage chao without the GBA linking step. When the time came to make a "blackmarket" built into the app, I had to document as much of the chao format as possible because buying eggs for SADX doesn't work unless you manually create the stats, unlike SA2B that has an inventory and lets the game take care of designing the chao. The flag that makes chao shiny does not work on jewel/rare chao, so I'm very interested in knowing how this would work. There's a lot of chao info out there, but I don't think anyone has ever talked about some of the GBA exclusive features. There's a palette feature that lets you customize the appearance of a chao in the TCG. This data is reset when transferring via GBA linking.
Well faked bro
You have 1400h, i have 2400h... i don't have the shrouded ghost 💀
When I myself did a deep dive into Chao mechanics for my max Emblems playthrough earlier this year I learned a lot of this, but even with many hours of research and gameplay I still learned some stuff from this video. Excellent job! Instant sub.
At first I honestly thought this was a choa video and the I gained… INFINITE CHAO KNOWLEDGE
2kh still never even seen him
What clothes are you wearing? Looks good :)
That'd be the Gilded Phoenix clothing set, for the most part; Twitch drops from a while back!
this is rare propaganda, we all know the Shrouded Ghost does not exist!
As some one who doesn’t use mods, your research was so greatly appreciated. 🫡🫡
imagine a nother crew sinked you doing the meg
So, what I can take away from this is the Sonic Advance TCG is pretty much superior when it comes to preset stats for those hatched that game.
If you wanted Grade 255 Luck & Int, sure; otherwise, there aren't any presets involved, but rather Grade distribution curves that differ a bit from the Gamecube.
@@Calmer_GM That could explain why my Chao performance in races were inconsistant when using TCG Chao, especially SADX.
For character presets, are there anything unique for characters that can't normally access the chao garden?, like the multi-player characters? Or super sonic/shadow?
I have no idea since I don't use the Mod that enables that. I'd guess that it would depend on what internal values the Mod developer assigned to those characters.
I made it all the way through and this kinda reminds me of pokemons evs and ivs
bro, cant tell you why it happened... but i literally tear up watching you get that fucking shark. a truly magical moment.
bro its not that serious ☠
Absolute God tier content
I went through the whole video while working on my Omegamon X-Antibody Figure-rise Standard Amplified model kit. This kit could end up taking the longest amount of time of the 4 model kits I've purchased so far. I'll have to see once I get to the remaining two.
I was so bummed fishing in the newer sonic game, I miss and wish they would make a new choa world
I absolutely love videos that over analyze niche mechanics. i loved watching this
First off thank you for all of this info. I know this was a struggle and a time sink at times. It is very appreciated and I'm sure this will be referenced by many in the future. But there is more info that you will need to add if you want to complete this adventure... manly Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut AND possibly the gba games... let me explain. First off as a kid I found out that if you don't have sonic pinball or any of the gba games with chao gardens. when you connect the gba without a game in and transfer a chao into it your gba downloads a version of it. Meaning that sab2 could ether have a different version of the garden (like a beta version that may have somethings that are different). On top of that you can transfer chao from SADX the same way as above to SAB2( meaning possibly older version of the gba game is downloaded). booting up SADX transfer the chao onto the gba with no game also provides a different version than the SAB2, but it can be used to transfer to SAB2. (picture transferring pokemon from r/b/y to g/s/c) I bring this up because when I was a kid we transferred the black egg you get from SADX to SAB2. The Chao will always have all B ranks when hatched. The chao was hatched in SADX. This also includes all black eggs bought from the black market once its been transferred over to have this same result. (If you need proof I can boot up the old save file and provide you with screenshots etc) So all in all there is a lot to test, as follows: Is there a difference between SAB2 download gba when there is no game? Is there a difference between SADX download gba when there is no game? Is SADX gardens affected by the same rules that you tested (gardens, characters etc) Eggs transferred from SADX to SAB2 hold their ranks? In addition I got my black choa to all s ranked by cloning it and breeding with it repeatedly. (clone the child and raise a different stat and then grow to an adult) All of the info I provided is for the GameCube versions of SAB2 and SADX. Ngl I hope you make a follow up video with this info. If you do I wish you the best of luck and sorry >.<
I realize the video is long (which makes minute details hard to notice), but in it I actually addressed a small part of that around 34:32 because *this info has been known by the community for years now:* SA2B gives an empty GBA v1 of the TCG, and SADX yields v2 of the TCG. This has been tested at length, _long_ before I began my research. Additionally, on top of SADX not being a part of my research because I don't own the PC version of it, this research is not meant to catalogue SADX, _which uses the same overall Chao mechanics as SA2B,_ but with less gameplay features and an altered RNG Seed system. Other people in the community have looked into and documented how SADX's randomized Stats behave, but ultimately they're not relevant to my research on SA2B here and I certainly wouldn't presume to present their already-documented findings in a follow-up video; if you did want to know why the Adventure Field Egg had those Stats, I'd advise asking the other researchers who've covered SADX in the community. Additionally, I'd clarify if possible whether the Stats were all B _before_ the transfer, and if not, state what the Stats were originally (this can be checked by noting how many Points each Stat gains per Level Up in SADX), as well as state which TCG they were transferred into in order to get them onto your copy of SA2B. Edit: Furthermore, I can personally confirm that my SADX Black Chao was not an all B Chao, but rather an ABCDE Chao, so your claims don't indicate any replicable pattern on that front either, but rather perhaps one tied to your save file's Seed.
The save file seed is an interesting point, I'll see if I can repeat it when I have some free time. What process would you like me to do in order to test this with video recording? I'm assuming checking my old save first and transferring a clone from sadx to sab2 then repeating it on a new save file for both?
You're not beholden to _me_ at all, nor are you expected to test or record anything. As I said, everything I tackled was for SA2B, making Chao generated in SADX unrelated to my documentation. - For clarity, I know for certain that a veteran researcher within the community has already looked into SADX in the past regarding whether there are any Preset Stat patterns amongst the Chao, and their results stated that Chao were "100% random (...) on all versions of SADX." I realize their wording is both broad _and_ vague compared to what I presented for SA2B, but considering I already have _absolute_ proof that my original GCN SADX Black Chao was an ABC Chao with 0 Luck and 0 Intel, and someone else's Gold SADX Chao was another ABC variant, I'd be tempted to roll with their answer. Regardless, if you still wanted to do your own SADX testing, you mainly have the right of it: You'd want to verify your original Chao Data, send them to the TCG, then move them to SA2B to check their Grades... Start a completely fresh SADX save, unlock the Gardens again, unlock the Eggs you desire to test again, rinse and repeat. If you wanted to check their Luck & Intelligence, you'd need to perform many other steps. There are other variables as well, but accounting for all of them would mean each SADX Chao Save File would effectively need to be tested about 5 different times/ways. - And I personally wouldn't wish that one anyone.
One possibility is that I bought a black egg from one of the bay games (played a lot of mini games to get it) are those stats locked in? Sorry your video has a ton of info in it and I forget if you went over it
Originally you stated that "all black eggs bought from the black market" in your game were the same as the one you're referring to with all B Grades, so assuming by "bay games" you mean the TCG minigames, this seems moot, especially since you can't buy Black Eggs from the TCG, with Onyx Eggs being the closest thing (which obviously cannot be bought from the Black Market). And if by "locked in" you mean Preset like some of SA2B's Chao Grades, no, TCG Grades aren't Preset.
i subscribed a minuet and 25 seconds in just going off strength of character
Oh dang is this intentionally sleep content?
Perhaps not intentionally, but it's a known fact from my Streaming days that my content has been used to lull newborns to sleep, at the very least!
I actually did the same thing with my old Blue version. Backed everything up and got my original blastoise onto home. After hearing that the batteries on those usually don't last much longer than 20-25 years it felt like I accomplished a rescue mission.
Chao's are one of the best things to come out of the Sonic Franchise, it boggles my mind that Sega never does anything with them anymore. It would be cool if they brought them back and you could control them in minigames, or even help you out in the main game temporarily if you get a certain item. Like you get the item and it summons them, which would either be a computer controlled character or you'd temporarily be playing as them. Wouldn't exactly be helpful if they're a brand new low level chao since they basically just slowly crawl around, so it'd probably better to not have them summonable unless they're at a certain level. If you can make your chao super powerful and awesome it would help out a lot and be a fun gimmick I think.
They're coming back in certain ways for Sonic X Shadow Generations, we know that much. After that, we've heard through the grapevine that a standalone Chao game is being worked on.
@@Calmer_GM Oh wow didn't know either of those things, thanks for telling
1:00 mfw when I play the video at 1.5X speed
