    4:24 The Atlas-V started flying in Sep 2002, just 4 MONTHS after SpaceX was founded. SpaceX didn't land a booster until Dec 2015 (13 yrs later) and didn't reuse a booster until Mar 2017 (15 yrs later). Booster reusability is great, but has drawbacks. First, if you don't have a fast enough launch cadence, you can spend more on recovery equipment and personnel than you save by reusing the booster. Second, you take a payload hit for the recovery system on the booster. The Falcon 9 B5 can lift up to 22.8 tons to LEO when expended (SX), but only up to 17.4 tons when landed on a drone ship (B1067.9). Doing a Return to Launch Site (RTLS) landing, costs even more payload as you have to add a boost back burn to cancel the lateral velocity and return back to the launch site. Third, the higher and faster you go, the harder reusability is to perform. The heavier the dry-mass of your booster, the harder reusability is to perform. Fourth, you now have to have the weather be acceptable at the launch site and the landing site, if it is down range of the launch. No, I'm not saying that SpaceX should not recover boosters. I'm using how reusability affects the Falcon 9 to discuss other expendable boosters. Making the Atlas-V reusable, would mean redesigning the whole booster. The Atlas-V replacement Vulcan Centaur is expected to do booster separation higher and faster than the Falcon boosters. So they are planning on what they call Sensible Modular Autonomous Return Technology (SMART) reuse. The engine section will detach and an inflatible heat shield will expand to protect the section during re-entry. They will parachute he inflatible heat shield to land in the ocean and fish it out of the water. ULA says that the tanks are cheap to make, so they are only recovering the more expensive engine part with the flight avionics. ULA plans to get Vulcan Centaur flying, before trying the SMART recovery. The Vulcan Centaur is 5.4m in diameter compared to the 3.7m Falcon booster, so almost certainly has more dry-mass. 4:28 Since the Atlas-V is retiring, any future Starliner flights (like to commercial stations) would almost certainly be launched on the ULA Vulcan Centaur, which noted above will be partially recoverable.

    4:12 Crew Dragon has the SAME TWICE a year cadence to the ISS that Starliner does for the Commercial Crew contracts. Once Starliner is operational, each will do 1 NASA flight to the ISS each year.

  • @steveaustin2686
    @steveaustin2686 8 днів тому

    3:54 Starliner and Crew Dragon Commercial Crew contracts are fixed-price contracts, so the Boeing bid in Sep 2014 was for all he development, OFT flight, this CFT flight, and the 6 operational missions. So the $90M per mission has ALREADY been bid by Boeing for the flights. Since the contracts are fixed-price contracts, Boeing has been paying for the Starliner fixes. The last Soyuz seat that NASA purchased was $86M and future Soyez seats were going to be more than $90M per the NASA OIG.

  • @steveaustin2686
    @steveaustin2686 8 днів тому

    1:59 No, the launch was attempted on May 6th, because ALL the problems that needed to be fixed on Starliner for flight, WERE fixed.

    It's very unlikely that Elon Musk's Moonbase dream is ever going to eventuate. The entire strategy of getting there is just 'Buck Roger concepts. The same goes for his Mars colonisation. All of it is just a multi- millionaire's fantasy. We must go back to the Apollo Moon Missions and see how NASA eventually figured out a practical way of getting out the the Moon and landing there. Their original ideas were very similar to what Elon Musk's ideas are now. They then realised just how impractical the original concept was. But I guess we'll see how all of this is going to 'pan out'

    • @kensmith8832
      @kensmith8832 Місяць тому

      Methane boiling point is too close to the point of freezing. This means the fuel is boiling off during launch, reducing the amount of usable fuel. The surface tension is also an issue once the spacecraft reaches zero gravity.

      @kensmith8832 Are these reasons why SpaceX is having vessel return issues?

    • @kensmith8832
      @kensmith8832 Місяць тому

      @@Reddogovereasy Not totally. SpaceX hasn't fitted a ship with thrusters. Basically, the rockets are large scale models with no return plan. The booster creates so much vibration, it should shake itself apart, until they get the length right. The length change is like a tuning fork, the longer it is, the higher the frequency, the less destruction.

      Falcon also took quite a while to develop, with quite a few blow-ups along the way; but is now the premier launch vehicle, with over 300 successful launches and booster/fairing recoveries, which no one else seems capable of yet. SX launches more flights and carries more cargo to space than the rest of the world, because they are the most reliable and cheapest. Starship is coming along well and by year end should be flying production payloads. To date SX is the ONLY company to launch a Stainless Steel rocket with FFSC Methalox engines as high and far as it has. This is something the Russians could not even do. There are going to be many versions of starship, some will be expendable, either by dumping in the ocean or in space. Some will be non-earth landers. Then there will be Fuel Tankers and Depots, Crew and Cargo LEO/MEO/GEO Orbital versions, Point-to-point (PtP) types that will scarcely touch orbit. These PtP types are what the Military is interested in. How a Mars/Moon lander will land on earth if needed has not been defined. There is also no need to think that an SS with landing gear could not be caught by chopsticks. Boosters will allways be caught with Chopsticks or expended. They only ascend to about 70km at a max speed of of about 6,000km/hr before staging.
