Wing Chun - Simple kung fu
Приєднався 5 лип 2020
I have been training and leaning Wing Chun Kung Fu since 1980 .
My master Sifu Fung ( Jimmy ) introduced me and my fellow instructors to his sifu , Chu Shong Tin , in the mid 1980's . It was this first encounter that I was to learn how little I knew and how much more could be could be achieved, despite several years of constant and dedicated practice and teaching.
Despite the skill of Sifu Fung , I found myself in a constant loop with my own ability with only a very slow progression in my skills . In 1991 I was to travel to Grandmasters home in Hong Kong , for the first time ,to truly pursue my desire to learn more. A humbling experience which was to catapult me to levels I couldn't have realized before.

Maintain structure as you move your entire body
Man i love Chu Shing Tin. So, if i get it right, the Movement comes from the spine ?
We talk a lot about your centre. This is pure perfect timing of moving your stance with your strike. Exactly the same as a palm strike , push or a punch. Best to practice on a heavy bag or next time you’re walking though a swinging door 😂 Be careful
Look at the smoothness of his joints and at the same time the precision of his movements 🥰
He continued to perfect his Kung fu until he passed. He always believed there was still more
This Man is pure wisdom!
The videos I’ve uploaded were shot the first time I visited him in 1991. If you’re keen you may be able to gain knowledge. He was my grand master. Although my master was a great fighter , he didn’t have the same passion as CST to pass his knowledge .
What year was this?
1991
I enjoyed watching this, thanks for explaining!
There is little verbal explanation . I needed to feel it being done to me. Then attempted the technique unsuccessfully quite a few times . I nearly got it right but only once. Truly difficult .
@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 I appreciate you taking the time to answer, thank you! I'm a Chen Tai Chi, Choy Li Fut guy. Never tried Wing Chun, but I study the You tube channels on it a lot.
That pulling really needs an explanation 😁
I still can’t do it 😂. According to CST , Master Ip didn’t master it either. One of the guys with me , Graham K , managed to get it during our training on this trip. Mark Spence , who is teaching in Sydney , worked it out. You should reach out to him. Chi Sau Club. His knowledge is solid. Similarly Nima King. Mindful Wing Chun . Keep training 👍🏻
It actually does, the technique starts with a slight dropping of your weight followed by hip rotation, with the hand movement being last. Beginners often start with the hands first and try to muscle their way through.
@@blockmasterscott Mark Spence explained the sensation he experienced . Saying he felt as one connected unit . A single mass with CST body . Then pivoted. He seemed to find a way of it making sense before attempting the technique. He was good at this one . Often this will be the case where remaining relaxed to generate a lot of power can be seen in your mind before performing it successfully .
He was so patient and dedicated ☺️
Wonder what the context was near the end about the angle of latching.
More of an attempt to understand the limitations .
Importance of the elbow sinking when turning. 🥰
I would like to announce and annotate how important Master Chu's teachings of Chum Kiu is in this video. (As of anything that Master Chu taught, props to Ip Man.) My Sifu Mark every now and then mentions this section of the footage from @3:00 to us (his students), because he was there and it's recorded! At the 3 minute mark, Master Chu can be seen teaching Chum Kiu pivot from neutral stance, where the weight shifts from the leg of the side you're pivoting to, gradually to the rear leg, until 90 degrees pivot where the rear leg has 100% of the weight. This can be seen in Ip Man's Chum Kiu footage (the one that was filmed a few weeks before his death). Strangely, it can be seen that many of Ip Man's lineages, the first generation students (or/and student's students) didn't quite get his teachings, with all due respect. It could be perhaps the student didn't spend enough time on the forms, or perhaps it was Ip Man's traditional-laid back teaching style. Therefore, it can be noticed if you compare several Chum Kiu forms of Ip Man's HK students, that out of the three empty hand forms, Chum Kiu differs the most. Such flawed differences can also be seen in WC sparring videos against other martial arts. Most of them fail because the WC practitioner doesn't know how to ulitise their own body mass upon contact with the opponent, found in Chum Kiu and fundamentally from Siu Nim Tao.
Marks Spence’s understanding of Wing Chun is exceptional . Thank you for your observation. This part of the second form with the shifting of your weight to the rear leg is an aspect I have not practised properly . Interestingly CST demonstrated on one of his earlier visits to Australia , what my sifu termed “ghost kick”. Where CST , whilst having his weight on his rear leg in the form , performed a kick with his rear leg , without appearing to shift his weight. He was an amazing man. Did you visit him with Mark ?
@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 Unfortunately I started WC after Sigung's death.
@@Aw3Sum3K9 stick with Mark. He’d certainly be one of the best teaching today 🙏
This shift is required to perform the kick with balance and power.
I've heard about this "ghost kick" but I've not seen any video footage of it. Was there ever a video recording of CST performing it?
Funny at 01:00 when Sigung basically tells him that he’s not focusing on the right thing (height of fist) 😂
Dude this Chu Shong Tin Conent is awsome!
Thanks. I have continued to improve simply through rewatching it to remember the feeling. He was a wonderful teacher
This is gold. Thanks !
just perfect
Perfect posture. No tension. Intense focus.
I see a bit of Alex Man in his style, different generation obviously. 😊
I’m not familiar with Alex Man. Ah Kuhn had been a boxer before he came to train with CST. He was interested only in the fighting aspects and not studying to the depths that were available. His skills in wing Chun were fantastic never the less. He loved to spar
@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 Alex Man is a former student of Sigung Chu Shong Tin, in white here: ua-cam.com/video/g1XDDE6SnII/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Ah Keung not only know fighting,he also have internal power. When he doing chi Sao is so powerful
His patience in teaching was obvious. Precious guidance here.
He wanted nothing more than to share his knowledge . He was extremely generous , gifted & humble .
Such precious footage. Loved the detail of all joints working together to form the palm strike instead of just forearm. 🥰
Any tips here? Dont focus on your forearm too much and keep straightness.
Focus on the target and stay relaxed. Your strike and stance are working together.
This video is showcasing the Bone Structure, and mechanics of how proper bone structure, will generate a strength that muscles can't. The physics of this is that it often appears as if the practitioner has super strength, or some hidden chi power. This is where the Kung Fu gets these myths and legends from. But proper CHI is actually bone structure, alignment, relaxing during it, and physics implemented. Most people during a fight are using Muscle mass, and muscle strength, but Wing Chun relies on application by bone structure, natural movements that generate far more strength than muscle can.
Shame the greats are passing - RIP Chu Shong Tin - He had a great understanding of the mechanics.
if that weren't a skinny old man I'd say those are the saddest kicks I've ever seen
He was teaching how to perform this kick correctly. He had no intention to show us how much power he could generate. We already knew his power. At the speed he is performing this kick at , you can see the movement of the guy holding the pad at the slow speed. Nothing is wasted . Even when the move is done slowly. And yeah. He was nearly 60. Skinny ? Yes. He was unwell. His skills we perfect. Check him out on other sites. He died some years ago but many still continue teaching from his legacy.
it looks different because its internal force. You need to feel the difference. But i can tell you force through your body is really crazy
@@bewusstseinskunst I never felt the force of sigung CST kick. But had watched him kicking a bag five years earlier. The reaction from the guy holding the bag was significant . CST used no effort to generate power with his kick. His movements were perfect every time
I would have loved to test my chi sao skills against Ah Keung. His strength is his bong sau, combined with the rotation of his body to attack the fook sau. I would have enjoyed seeing how relaxed I could be against his bong sau whilst trying to focus my fool say towards his centre moving up or alternatively trying to latch his bong sau down. I’m not saying I would have been successful. I just would have enjoyed the challenge against his skill level.
He had so much power and speed. I trained with him every night both times I went to Hong Kong. After the first two weeks he wasn’t able to get away with as much. Next time I went back I had to start all over again. For a guy his height he just seemed to do whatever he wanted . You would have loved it .👍🏻
@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 I think he used his height, or should I say low centre of gravity, and centre of mass, very well. Anyway, I am glad you had that experience.
@@andrewmason8691 he came to Australia several times with CST in the 80’s and 90’s. Did you ever meet him in Sydney or witness him dismantle everyone 😂
Graham would have been training for around 16 years at the time of this video and Ah Keuhn slightly less. I’ve been training in Wing Chun for 37 years and I’m blown away by the quality of their chi sau. Graham’s angles rarely collapse, despite Ah Keuhn using his whole mass at times to drive in. Watching how relaxed Ah Keuhn’s face and neck muscles were was a treat. Both were able to maintain their structure throughout. Usually two people of similar skill levels make chi sau between them become and look ugly. But this is as good as any chi sau battle I’ve seen.
I started in Adelaide at the beginning of 1980. Graham and Albert were two of the senior instructors then. I’ve no idea how long they had been training for at that time. I enjoy watching Ah Keuhn and Suzanna playing chi sau. You can observe the relaxed state but still notice the power behind the movement.
@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 I believe they both started in 1973, the same year Sifu Jim started teaching. Graham came out to Manly branch in Sydney when travelling for work once. I started in 1987. It’s interesting having now trained for more years than they had at the time of the videos, which makes me respect their standard even more.
@@andrewmason8691 keep it going brother for as long as you can . Experiment . Try new ideas. We may never be the best but I am sometimes quite surprised with how my training has kept improving. Despite my training being forms only for the last 2 years. I’ve met Dave Lovegrove a couple of times but not really done much apart from chat. Hope to spend a few hours rolling next time we catch up. Miss it heaps.

Best Wing Chun teacher and training 🙏🙏🙏
Certainly the best Wing Chun exponent I ever had the pleasure of learning from. THE BEST
I wish I could have joined this institute for getting a professional training of Wing Chun.
Hey, it's never too late to start!
It’s crazy how deep this form of and martial arts in general goes. It feels like that the mind set and the atmosphere of training and studying slowly but surely fades away. Of course a factor has to be that people nowadays aren’t able to spend that much time on it.
Yes. To be able to dedicate your life in the pursuit of your passion is certainly our of the reach of most people. Perhaps this was why he lived a very simple , uncomplicated & quiet life. It suited him . Money or fame never occurred to him. These were of no interest. He was a remarkable gentleman.
@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 he was indeed.
In Real fight it is impossible to make it 😮
if the response is automatic , you can remain relaxed.
Because you have no knowledge of Wing Chun.
I think what we are most struggling with is to uncouple/couple the joints in addition to keeping them relaxed. But most of all, the effect he could trigger meant he was certainly very relaxed as a whole. Thanks for sharing. 🥰
it's ridiculous how open his shoulders were
Not unlike trying to pick up an oily ball bearing with chop sticks. His shoulder sockets were totally free. I’ve watched you demonstrate this . You’d be closer than most to having this pretty right. Most wouldn’t have ever experienced it
Did you see how the student submitted to the pull, and the old skinny Man did not??? There was NO TAI CHI CHUAN, No Qigong used at ALL. #INTERNAL #SOFTandHARD ☯️🥋
Nobody has ever submitted to "the old skinny guy" . He was the genuine master. You can still meet and train with students of his across the globe . They would welcome you to test them out. Highly recommend you do this. There's a lot of crap on youtube
Do you make similar stupid comments under everybody's videos or you are displaying your mediocrity only in this video ?
He literally just shook his head and demonstrated VERY basic openings in the defense. He told that gweilo "NO." 😅
if you didn't perform it correctly , it was a "no" . These lessons were extremely valuable.

I’ve a later one of these from a different session. Less blurry but just as fast. I’ve got to find it 😂
I appreciate that brother. Watching this instructor is very worthwhile since his teaching is always to the point. There is nothing hidden or nothing fabricated. He surely knows how much his punch delivery is devastating cz they are generated from a well-grounded and steadiness from the core and bottom. We ll see the speed from a video, but we ll not see level of the pain by getting hit to one point by 10 ,12 punches in matter of 2 second. And he is relaxed after those punches ,no heavy breath
damn i need to work on my speed it seems

A lot of good videos Rob, I was hoping to find at least one footage of me somewhere of the 86 or 88 seminars... Was I camera shy or did the instructors get exclusive footage in the evening? Just a bit sad... In any case a lot of nice history.

@@sifpaulfernandezthewingchundao yeh. He usually spent a week in Adelaide and a week in Sydney. I chaperoned him and whoever accompanied him often. I recall one weekend when we had a bbq in the East end parklands. And another weekend when I took him to the royal show. Can you remember which of his students was with him ?
Coaches create fighters, masters create followers. Training low level students will make your art look horrible, but pay your rent for a long time.
Wise words
Great! Большого творчества!))
Wing Chun. In my opinion ,true wing chun is not yet within human knowledge. Respect to this instructor , he always shows very subtle way of human anatomy gets appealed in defending oneself. Sad this art hz not developed to itz peak cz of human consciousness about human fighting hz been ratcheting down.
You’re quite possibly on a very similar train of thought to many of us , and I can only speak of the westerners I trained with in HK, that more answers are still to be discovered. His HK students were training for many different reasons. The more intellectual students had different reasons and the better for those of us who trained with them . Some just wanted to fight. Despite Chu Shong Tins knowledge, he had possibly gone off on a bit of a tangent near his final time with us. But who am I to say ? He was so good at the physical stuff that his pursuit of the internal focus had him trying to move things with his internal power. He admitted he couldn’t do it but continued to try until the end. He was a truly remarkable Kung fu master. We are all fortunate to have known him and felt his life. 👍🏻
This looks like chaos. Neither side seemed to know what the other side was doing.
The westerners were there to learn and discover there shortcomings. The old master was teaching and pointing out the mistakes in application which many of us weren’t aware we of. These experiences training with CST occasionally over several decades were extremely valuable
They did know what they were doing but apparently it ll take so long for you to know.
do you relax your arm fully or just make your arm follow your dropped elbow?
Starting with your shoulder being totally relaxed. Then make sure your forearm and hand are also relaxed. If you want to imagine holding and pulling something down with your hand , it may assist with taking your focus away from your elbow . Your shoulder though is the starting point. There’s a number of other things related to your body which are more advanced, which also assist. But see how you go just with the arm as a start
just found this gem thank you!
you're welcome.
