Refinement - Definition of Ready | Love It or Ditch It?
Your facial expressions are spectacular! I've never actually laughed when watching anything about SAFe until now :-) Thank you!!
OMG, this is awesome! Best compliment I could ever get. Anything else you'd like for me to explain from that framework?
By far, one of the best and most entertaining videos on SAFe PI Planning, EVER! Thank you
Thanks! That was my goal. I remember watching videos on SAFe when I was starting - they could serve as a cure for insomnia!
Thank you for taking the time to explain this concept.
You're very welcome!
What's the best country to live in for a scrum master?
I'd say The Netherlands.
Safe as agile as a rock
You comment makes my day every time I see it :)
Pure nonsense
thank you Maria for sharing your thoughts from the conference, and also the state of Agile! I've been noticing the same in the Agile circles about how the Agile-craze is now over, no longer in favor, just another methodology...it's discouraging I think its discouraging because I have had the opportunity to work on a fully remote team where we embraced Agile, had a wonderful Scrum Master and delivered (in iterations) new software that was what the customers wanted. To be honest, the process was not easy and we went through a lot of growing pains along the way. That whole process (which was over several years of inspect and adapting) was worth it. Customers were happy (even if they provided critical feedback, we were getting frequent feedback), leadership was happy, our team collaborated together and with other teams in our org ~ good times. For agile teams that haven't had a great experience, I agree that sometimes leadership (management) might be a pain point, it also could be that some members of the team are slower to change and feel that agile is being forced on to them. For that I think that small steps of incorporating Agile and Scrum practices would be beneficial. Keeping it casual is good, change is always difficult and some team members might embrace "something new", some others wouldn't at all/as quickly 😉but being mindful of the team's personalities leads to success. Ideally, IMO I think that it comes down to what works best for the team so that it can deliver working software, be nimble to handle feedback or changes and value people (team members and stakeholders)...that might be an à la carte approach to agile/scrum, but if there is support to experiment with that...go for it
I'm new to all this info but I love your style of teaching. Thank you Coach.
This is amazing to hear! Thank you!
Hahaha love it, also love the very calming yoga music and voice this time.. ;) Although not big fan of the idea that such events take place in Texas..
Fair enough! And happy to hear the music is a nice touch. In fact, it’s country music 🤠
Love it
Agile methods used to be a thing engineering teams did internally when it was helpful. And sometimes we did it informally (like go to coffee and talk about challenges (blockers) to solicit ideas instead of a worthless DSU). Agile with SAFe has now become professionalized and exhausting and lame. It's become almost an academic exercise where SMs, POs, Agile coaches, RTEs have created an ecosystem where the whole point has become adherence to its processes. The point of Agile has become doing Agile. And the time spent in isolated Jira boards is excessively wasteful. (At least tools like Azure DevOps have a full suite of planning, testing, repos, pipelines, etc. built-in to a single seamless experience. Standalone Jira is especially suspect to me.) But leadership in many companies drunk the Kool-Ade after listening to an army of consultants and now all of Jonestown is being poisoned.
How on point! I subscribe to this quote"It's become almost an academic exercise." Was thinking about it today how painful and exhausting was learning in an academic way and you are right, we bring it back for people with SAFe. Bureaucracy and pain
This is great!
Really impacting as my organisation is in part (our bug department) is culling all agile for exactly the reasons you say, "bring it into the team" etc and also cut costs. .. and as a new SM (2 years) finding the market tough. Signing up now
Amazing as always, your content is also super great.
I appreciate that! <3
Am grateful for your videos......i love the clarity and simplicity of language use
I'm so glad to hear that the language I use resonates with you!
Am so ready for some KANBAN 😂

Great meeting you this week at Agile Alliance 2024 #Agile2024
Lovely to meet you too! Hope you'll like the book!
A very educative video ..thank you
Great to know! Thanks
This template is chef's kiss 😙🤌
Ha! Totally!
Maria, I have a question for you. I just started working for a new company (8 days ago). They are using JIRA to keep a list of all their projects and track to a completion date. They do not use Agile (i think waterfall). They do not want to use agile. They are not recording tasks. They do not have employees assigned to tasks. They are asking me "How can we use JIRA more effectively?" i'm not sure where to start. What are your thoughts? Any suggestions?
Ufff this is a complex one. Would need to know more details about the company itself. If you want to “be agile” start small. Take one team and start recording their tasks in Jira. Install a daily meeting - you can watch my video on walking the board and start with that. And later you can make small tweaks based on the feedback
This video is aligned with present thinking. People have been using Scrum for 30 years and everybody is an agile master at this point with hardly a day in agile that doesn't look like any other day, and hardly a team in agile.that doesn't look like any other team. So it is a good time to step back and think about what are we actually trying to achieve, and this seems to be a desirsble direction.
💯
The half of scrum badly and using jira quote actually came from the creator of agile, Andy Hunt
Thanks for noticing!
You're hot god damn
❤
Why so much negativity against SaFe from your prospective?
Because it feeds bureaucracy and so much overhead! Makes it tiresome.
after 5hrs im still insulted 🤬
🤣 Have you thought it's your imagination that's insulting you?
your microphone is insulting me.....🤬
Thank you!! :)
Very nice! Thank you. Miro is great!
It is! And now after all the new releases of Intelligent Canvas even more!
Insightful! I loved many parts of this podcast, especially the courage to speak beyond hierarchies.
Right? David is a rockstar! A person to learn from on how to be more assertive!
Hehe, bull*4it management. I am adopting this term now :) It's funny how people say that waterfall is dead and then they spent days planning. And hamster stays trapped in a wheel.
It's very on point! David has good analogies. And yep, how many times we felt like that hamster, right?
Scale Agile Framework is just Waterfall with an Agile Skin. It's prescribed, project management, gnatt chart release planning with some Agile buzz words laid over it and some agile offices and team structure like Product Owner and Scrum Master; but it's not Agile. What SAfist call chaos, is the adaptability of Agile and having a flatter control structure; but when you need the power and control of demanding what's going to be done, and by what deadline, that just won't do. We had senior VP a couple years ago try to bring SAFe to our organization; which was basically him telling the team's what they must deliver by each release based on his business initiatives. I was so glad when we came back for the next release planning and he was gone. Don't know if him leaving was related to his SAFe attempts; but doesn't matter, cause Scalable -Waterfall- Agile went with him.
Thanks for sharing this story! That's a story of so many enterprise level companies! A person comes from a SAFe environment and without any observation or attempt to understand the new organization directly applies a known prescription - we gotta do SAFe here! From my experience such implementations lead to this person sooner or later leaving the company and taking SAFe with them.
Nice work Maria! Your analysis is really interesting and insightful. I think companies generally, especially big tech, saw a rapid expansion due to the flood of money during government stimulus as a result of covid. During this time, everything that was virtual become super accelerated, physical building costs went down, and hiring went up. With it, came a glut of managers, including agile peoples to meet the demands of the software projects (because physical projects were not as easy). With a glut, comes a drop in quality. SAFe became more popular, because of the minimal impact on having to make any real organisational structural change, and with it a cadre of “ceremony” evangelists. After 2-3 years, and having COVID pass, companies are looking at their crazy hiring practices as normality returns, and some of these people are expected to return to the office, which means costs go up. It’s time to shed again. To increase profitability, as you rightly said, cost cutting begins and the easy target is people. Managers will always go first, as they are non essential. Middle managers will be first in line, and that’s precisely where Agile peeps fit. I’ve not seen any company (bar one) I’ve worked for in the last 6 years show a strong ability to focus, mobilise its human assets and strategy in a way to maximise value. I think there’s still massive opportunity for companies to leverage much of what the best of the Agile community has on offer. However, as has been rightly pointed out, there is such an over saturation of text book purists, that the whole “people and interactions over processes and tools” has ironically been lost. Great work, interested to see how your new project goes!
Great timing, Maria! I just see it now that you have posted this today, immediately signing up ✨
Ha! Timing is everything, isn't it! This is awesome! 🙌
It was such a great pleasure exchanging with you, Maria! Your channel rocks!
Great chat, David! I received comments saying that it's highly motivating! The viewers appreciated the bias to action, rather the death by planning! And also looking at small failures as learning opportunities. Looking forward to our future collaboration, @DavidPereira88 !
annoying
Thanks for sharing!
Like reason to Flat earth earthers
Small note- The Certified ScrumMaster Certificaiton is provided by the Scrum Alliance, not the Agile Alliance. Agile Alliance does not provide certifications.
True! Thanks, I confused the two in my head. Must be over the excitement of going to Dallas this year 🙈
Great content as usual, thanks for creating and explaining things in such a great way
Thank you, Paul 🥰
I love that you invite challenging your views ;) I have a slightly different view on the PSM as you do ;) The main difference is that for a PSM you do not have to visit a training of a vetted expert. Everyone can offer preparation training and you can to the test even with only self studying. Scrum Alliance CSM (not Agile Alliance ;) ) requires to visit a training with one of the few Certified Scrum Trainers. They questions in the PSM test might be "tougher" or more ambiguous, but I have witnessed it numerous times that people with a PSM visited a CSM and stated afterwards that they now understood more than before if hey had done self study or visited a non PST training. So my advice, if you take a PSM, at least make sure you visit a training with a PST.
Hej Jan! Love the challenge. Thank you for correcting me and expanding on the differences between the PSM and CSM certifications. I might have missed one important tip: choose your trainer! I think it all boils down to having a really good trainer that will explain everything with good examples and exercises. What do you think?
@@AgileStateofMind I think that is exactly key ;) thats why I am a fan of CSM's because it implies that participants have worked with an expert. For PSM they might... you don't see it at first sight. That and getting in touch with the agile community is key to me in order to grow, you can't do it on your own ;)
Passing the PSM with just self study would be tough. Many of the PSM questions are ambiguous and tricky. The PSM training course is usually 2 days and it is with a certified scrum master. It is either in person or online. Most folks, myself included, take the PSM training course which allows you 2 days of study with a scrum master. I would also add that the PSK training was fantastic and really opened my eyes to combining scum and Kanban. In all both certs do a sufficient job of giving people the basics on the framework but in the end (like many things in life) you will only learn by jumping in and getting your feet wet. Maria had the benefit of having mentors around. Some folks, like myself, who work at small orgs will need to learn on their own. I suggest if your in that situation you join some scrum groups and try to learn as much as you can for them. I am also a UX designer/manager at my org so I am planning on taking the PSU soon.
@@kingjames1308 nowadays with the help of AI ;) yet there are enough people who already passed it before AI with just self study. As far as I know there are not really rules for when someone can do PSM preparation training. Happy to be corrected on that matter but I see plenty of companies offering them and they are run by people with base level certifications... that is not sufficient for good training imho. You are spot on regarding community, that is something which is out there for free! and new people are welcomed with open arms. Thats why I keep hosting a local user group. I came as a noob and now I am the host so I can make sure the next generation can have the same learning journey I had.
Great overview for starters and experienced professionals!
Aww, thank you, Joan! 🩵🩵🩵
Very informative video. I'm going to try this? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Have a great day. 🗓 👍 Wow 800 likes 💃
Thank you! Walking the board is my favourite agile trick, glad it's being watched and liked 🤩
I've been on both a "Kanban" team that just set up status swimlanes and got going on the work, and a Kanban team coached by a professional that helped us understand the actual Kanban model, with WIP limits and techniques like mobbing (or is it called swarming?) to push "stuck" items forward. The feeling of teamwork was night and day. Chris Stone is a great source of retro ideas!
What a great testimony, Jamie! Proves that improving the way we work can also improve how we feel about work, right? And of course, that Kanban is not just a board we put on the wall... And yeah, Chris kicks ass!
I started my countdown timer…How long before companies finally realize they need to go back to Waterfall because ALL their work is budget locked, time locked, scope locked.
I also might be that many companies never left it, just rebranded the roles and events ;-)
Why she is talking like a teenage tictoker..! Closed the video in 10 seconds. That was irritating.
Hey, my name is Maria and I'm a real person. Sorry to hear you didn't like me after watching me for 10s.
Your comment was rudely stated. Do better. I assume English is not her first language, and there are some audio quality “tweaks” that could be applied to clean up the levels a bit (a very minor point).
"... why simplify if we we can complicate things ... ?" Yep, that's too often the way of Scaled Agile. I like the paradigm, and have seen it work well, but the nomenclature works against adoption. (For me, the website is ... off-putting.)
Agree hundoP!
@@AgileStateofMind I'll add that, in the past, in-person PI Planning was immensely valuable in establishing a 'human' connection with contacts on other teams, facilitating subsequent remote/virtual work
@@expatcanuck2087 oh yes, that was actually enjoyable. Increased collaboration, being able to come over to another table and resolve dependencies. That had a lot of power.
Sad to say scaled agile doesnt make sense. Sorry.
It's not just hated by "agile practitioners." It's hated by every engineer that is subject to a looney bin style way of project management, which is what this is.
Haha interesting, few people left to love SAFe.
