Thank you for this video. I was having real trouble incorporating a rat into my pedalboard, but I didn't give up on it because I knew there was something there. I ultimately settled on a fat rat which helped the low end but I still couldn't find a sweet spot on the tone that worked for me. Turns out that setting the fat rat to a stock rat setting and simply rolling the tone all the way off did the trick I would have never in a million years tried that, because I thought it got to wooly at 3:00. But sure enough, if you keep going, that's the sound.

Sovtek Deluxe is one of the three "Muffs" I find the best, EQD Hizumitas and the big-ass NY one's being the 2 others. In my doomy set up they all sound best with a dark reverb before the dirt, and distortion like Rat or HM-2 pushing Muff.

I was thinking about getting one of those and backing up it's gain with an overdrive in front of it. I already got Digitech Grunge that EVERYONE on the internet calls shit and got amazing tones out of it.

I hate that I found this channel so late, rats and rusty boxes are my favorite things ever. I actually stayed away from rats despite it being my favorite circuit for years because I never thought I’d be able to afford a “good one” and have gone through so many pedals and combinations of pedals all to essentially get a sound I never liked as much as a rat, and wound up falling in love with a lil rat of all things. How do you normally have your rusty set if I might ask? Do you normally have the low gain setting?

This pedal on bass is the ultimate grind bass tone. Hell it even kinda sounds like the INFESTER and Mortician bass tone, it's not what they used but it gets close with less eq and equipment

The sounds from the HP-1 seem to feel the best, as in, can hear responsiveness, a greater dynamic range when playing. Excellent comparison, thanks!

The Flatiron is a decent option, but frankly the low end didn't do it for me. I've now got a Broughton Audio Locust Star, which I think might be the perfect RAT... at least, for bass. But for guitar too.

Wow. I got a pretty keen ear and for me they all sounded damn near me identical except the dude seemed to just be a tad brighter or louder mids not sure but it's the only one that sounded a lil different than the other 3.

You can't go wrong. It just goes to show you, when it comes to Rat pedals (especially vintage ones) it has _nothing_ to do with "Oh, big box v2 Rats are better - No! It's white face Rats! - No way Jose it's all about the O.G. Bud Box Rat!!" arguments. It just comes down to finding a good Rat (I.e one _you_ like cuz they're all good). Because even though on paper/schematic there is no difference, it's obvious there *IS* a difference from one unit to the next due to any number of factors from component tolerance, component drift, component brand, the ghost in the box etc. It makes finding "your" Rat that much more fun.

Great comparaison ! I really really love the Dude Incredible ( and this great riffs 🤩) I have the Fredric FX one and it is my only pedal that I always kept while switching pedals back and forth for the past decade. I use it always on at low gain settings on a pretty clean Fender style amp, insane clarity/slight breaking up sound, it really responds to your playing dynamics, you get beautifully clean open chords and straight fuzz riff with the same setting just by strumming harder (using a weird seventies hofner with a super hot neck pickup though so that might count as well 😋). Feeling like I should use more often the dimed out face melting use of it

Imagine whipping out this setup when you're playing in the church band. 'Excuse me reverend, may one plug this direct into thy pa system?' Proceeds to play diminished chugga-chuggas with the odd pinch harmonic thrown in for good measure.

Honestly, this sounds good for sludge. Crowbar, Eyehategod, Superjoint Ritual kinda stuff.

I cannot believe you guys are using that Rusty Box into those pedals! Straight filth! Sounds awesome! I own a traynor ts50b and actually don't like using my slightly modded You Dirty Rat pedal with it. I love the pedal with my Ampeg V4 or B25b. The Traynor gets so filthy with the boost channel it doesn't really need a dirt pedal.
