Thank you for your question You raise a very good point. Although every man needs to be aware of the symptoms of prostate cancer, it is 2 to 3 times more common amongst Afro-Caribbean men. The cause is likely multifactorial - environmental (e.g. dietary impact on hormones) and genetic. The individual risk for each man will defer depending on factors such as family history. Even if your risk factors cannot be changed, being prostate cancer aware is very important, so you can seek advice early and have a conversation with your doctor. In England, men over the age of 50 years old (over 45 years old for Black men) can discuss having a PSA blood test with their GP, the pros and cons of the test, and what a positive or negative test might mean for you. Your greater awareness and seeking advice early is key - will allow early diagnosis if you do have prostate cancer and the earlier the diagnosis the better the prognosis.
